Classic Motown - in fact, I'm listening to the Miracles right now. Supremes, Temptations, Diana Ross' 1970s-early 1980s solo career, Smokey Robinson (with & without the Miracles), Stevie Wonder. More recently, I've always enjoyed Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, James Ingram, Terence Trent D'Arby, and Maxi Priest.

Another good one is Syreeta - the first wife of Stevie Wonder. She passed on a few years ago, but had such a beautiful, high voice - similar to Minnie Riperton and Deniece Williams. She collaborated with Stevie even after their marriage ended, and they stayed lifelong friends. Her best known song is probably "With You I'm Born Again" with Billy Preston, from the movie Fast Break. She also did duets with Smokey Robinson, Jermaine Jackson, and G.C. Cameron (from The Spinners).

I love hearing where couples who had been married still stay friends even after they divorce. Valerie Bertinelli was saying the same thing that it's much better between her & Eddie ever since they divorced and they're still good friends. I wish I could hear more of that.

Maybe you can help me with something, Monika. Did Roberta Flack and Maxi Priest sing a duet together in the early 90's called "Set the Night To Music"? I remember that song being on the radio quite often during my sophomore and junior years of high school, but it hasn't been played in more than ten years. I thought it was a really good song.

Yes, you're right: Roberta Flack & Maxi Priest did sing "Set the Night to Music". I have it on CD - the compilation is entitled "Softly With These Songs: The Best of Roberta Flack". Around the same time, Maxi Priest went to #1 with a song called "Close To You" (no, it's not the Carpenters song) which was pretty good.

Thanks, Monika :)

Another song that was pretty popular around that time was a song by Carole King from the soundtrack to A League Of Their Own. I think it was called "Now and Forever". I remember really liking that song too. That is another one that never gets played anymore. Even the Madonna song from that movie ("This Used To Be My Playground") never gets played anymore.

EWF and Kool & The Gang have always been really cool. I love "September" because it's my birth month. "Cherish" by Kool & the Gang is among my top 10 of all 1980s songs, and one of my favorite songs, period. As long as there are wedding receptions and sports victories, "Celebration" will be around. Ah, memories...

In the past couple of years, I have become a HUGE Donny Hathaway fan. The man's voice could melt butter. I have listened to "For All We Know" and "Je Vois Aime (I Love You)" so many times I've lost count. Sadly, he died about 8 months before I was born. He died the same week as another one of my favorites, Jack Soo (Barney Miller).

I like Memphis R&B: That includes all the great Stax/Volt stuff as well as James Carr, and Al Green

Motown (particuarly lesser known stuff like Chris Clark, The Velvelettes, The Marvelettes, Jr. Walker, Brenda Holloway, Kim Weston, The Countours, and the Funk Brothers)

James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett, Jackie Wilson, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, The Impressions, Etta James, Irma Thomas, The Meters

way too many to mention. Just about all R&B from the late 50's to early 70's moves me.

Totally as well as non Motown stuff like Major Lance, Steve Mancha, J.J. Barnes, early Edwin Starr, Tony Clarke, and Billy Stewart. They're big on the northern soul circuit.

I dont really like new R&B but one person who knocks me out is Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings. Their music sounds like the classic soul from the late 60's. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even though I listen to easy listening music now my favorite R&B music artists are Dionne Warwick Mary J. Blige Ashanti Prince and Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston and Nancy Wilson. I used to like Janet Jackson but after the Super Bowl incident my interest in Janet Jackson went downhill. I also like Toni Braxton a lot too
