LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - CBS' "Criminal Minds" could return for a third season without Mandy Patinkin.

This week the star didn't show up for the drama's table read (an initial run-through of the script), which first was reported by E!.

Sources said that the episode had been written featuring few scenes with Patinkin, an indication that the show is preparing for a possible future without him. Rumblings about friction between Patinkin and "Minds" producers first surfaced last summer.

It is customary after the second season of a hit show for the stars to renegotiate their deals and get sizable salary bumps. CBS has been tough when it comes to negotiating with stars on its crime procedural dramas and briefly fired "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's" George Eads and Jorja Fox in 2004.

Last week, Mandy Patinkin asked to be released from his role on Criminal Minds. We have honored this request, which was not in any way connected to contract renegotiations or salary issues. His departure from the series will be explained to audiences in an episode to be filmed in the near future and broadcast early next season. We thank Mandy for helping to make Criminal Minds a strong and successful series, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors. A new character will be added to the series for next season.

ON BEHALF OF MANDY PATINKIN:
Due to creative differences, Mandy has asked not to return to Criminal Minds this season. Mandy would like to thank the studios and network for releasing him from the series and he wishes the cast and crew continued success in all of their endeavors and looks forward to continuing to work with the Disney and CBS companies in other capacities in the future.

You will recall that Patinkin also ankled "Chicago Hope," then returned.

Mandy Patinkin did so much to sabotage his own career. He got fired one day into rehearsals for "Heartburn" for giving Meryl Streep notes (he was replaced by Jack Nicholson), he pissed everyone off on Broadway for slapping Toni Collette onstage in "The Wild Party," and dropped out of "Criminal Minds" without giving anyone any notice. That he has any career at all right now is a miracle, given what an insecure, self-sabotaging, narcissistic ham he has been for thirty years.
