View Full Version : Saying "Bye Bye Plane" Gets Toddler and Mom Kicked Off Flight
Zoneboy 07-13-2007, 12:10 AM ATLANTA - A woman said she and her toddler son were kicked off a plane after she refused a flight attendant's request to medicate her son to get him to quiet down and stop saying "Bye bye, plane."
Kate Penland, of suburban Atlanta, said she and her 19-month-old son, Garren, were flying from Atlanta to Oklahoma last month on a Continental Express flight that made a stop in Houston.
As the plane was taxiing in Houston en route to Oklahoma, "he started saying 'Bye, bye plane,' Penland told WSB-TV in Atlanta. The flight attendant objected, she said.
"At the end of her speech, she leaned over the gentleman beside me and said, 'It's not funny anymore. You need to shut your baby up,'" Penland told WSB-TV in Atlanta.
When Penland asked the woman if she was joking, she said the stewardess replied, "You know, it's called baby Benadryl."
"And I said, 'Well, I'm not going to drug my child so you have a pleasant flight,'" Penland told the TV station.
Penland said other passengers began speaking up on her behalf, and the flight attendant announced they were turning around and that Penland and Garren were going to be taken off the plane.
Penland and her son were let off the plane and did not complete the trip to Oklahoma, said Kristy Nicholas, spokeswoman for Express Jet Airlines, which flies as Continental Express on behalf of Continental Airlines.
Attempts by the Associated Press to reach Penland under a telephone listing that matched her last name were unsuccessful.
"I was crying, I was upset and I was thinking, 'What am I going to do? I don't have anything with me, I don't have any more diapers for the baby, no juice, no milk," Penland told WSB.
Nicholas said, "We received Ms. Penland's letter expressing her concerns and intend to investigate its contents."

dawsongirl 07-13-2007, 01:28 AM That bitch stewardess needs Valium and Lithium and a good kick in the ass. I hope that lady sues and Continental makes this bitch pay for it.
HE DIDN'T HAVE A RUNNY NOSE, YOU WHORE. And he certainly wasn't the one in need of a nap. I hope this woman doesn't have kids...can you imagine what doped-up zombies they must be?
freshprinceofLA 07-13-2007, 01:47 AM lately there has been a lot of stupitidy going around! What a b*tch this stewardess is!!!! All the kid was saying was bye bye plane! This b*tch made it seem like the kid was talking crap about her mom! This poor excuse for a stewardess needs to get sewed!
Hollow 07-13-2007, 02:42 AM if it weren't for the fact that i'd care about being a good influence on my son, i would have punched that dumb bitch in the face so damn hard before making my exit off the plane.
phoebe7165 07-13-2007, 03:01 AM I booked Continental for my trip next month. Makes me look forward to it all the more!!

80s_Fan 07-13-2007, 10:28 AM I don't understand what the problem is; what's the big deal with a kid saying that? That's going too far. What's this world coming to?

I think because it was nonstop and it was annoying the other passengers
Zoneboy 07-13-2007, 12:28 PM I think because it was nonstop and it was annoying the other passengers
You mean terrifying the other passengers or should I say the Flight Attendant.
I think the Mom should be brought up on charges for naming her child "Garren."
;)

:clap Amen to that! Hey, do you think he will ever be called "Garwin", "Garwood", "Gobbin", etc.? ;)
Zoneboy 07-13-2007, 06:08 PM Ok, What's wrong with Garren? There are names that are alot worse.
TVFactFan 07-13-2007, 06:45 PM You mean terrifying the other passengers or should I say the Flight Attendant.
I see nothing wrong it, the child could not be controlled by the mother and it was making the flight very uncomfortable for the other passengers and that's why she had to go
Zoneboy 07-13-2007, 06:58 PM I see nothing wrong it, the child could not be controlled by the mother and it was making the flight very uncomfortable for the other passengers and that's why she had to go
It wasn't that he couldn't be controlled, It was the fact that she wasn't going to do what the stewardess suggested. And exactly how was the child making the other passengers uncomfortable? If he were screaming his lungs out, I'll bet anything they would not have been kicked off that plane. The idiot stewardess is the one that should've been kicked off not the mother and child.

Bye Bye plane?
Bye bye, little kid!
Stewardess suggests
That medicine he should try-y

I meant to say UNPLEASANT

Ok but if a airline passenger feels unpleasant because a toddler says "Bye bye plane" then they have no business flying.
TVFactFan 07-13-2007, 07:03 PM Ok but if a airline passenger feels unpleasant because a toddler says "Bye bye plane" then they have no business flying.
It had nothing to do with what the toddler was saying, it was that the toddler kept saying it over and over and it was irritating the hell out of the other passengers
Zoneboy 07-13-2007, 07:08 PM It had nothing to do with what the toddler was saying, it was that the toddler kept saying it over and over and it was irritating the hell out of the other passengers
Oh come on, You mean to tell me that with all the hell these passengers have to go through to even get on the plane that the words of a little kid are going to irritate them? You obviously missed this part of the story:
Penland said other passengers began speaking up on her behalf, and the flight attendant announced they were turning around and that Penland and Garren were going to be taken off the plane.
It was the stewardess that was making an issue out of it not the passengers.

Oh well it was explained differently on the radio
Mikado 07-13-2007, 08:43 PM Oh well it was explained differently on the radio
They probably got the airline's version of the story......But, one way or the other, he's 18 months old! He's basically A BABY!! I mean, how can you kick out a child that young, just because he's excited about going on a plane ride; it's not as if he understands!!!....what's next, TODDLER/NON-TODDLER flights???? SHEESH!!!!! I think the airline should send the mother an appology and fire that stewardess!

Then you probably would have been arrested and could have been facing
jail time, Sarah. But it does sound like the stewardess does not need to be
a stewardess anymore.

Are you serious?
Mr. Television 07-13-2007, 09:59 PM I think the flight attendent thought bye bye meant the plane was going
to be blown up.
She thought the baby was going to blow up the plane?

LOL actually I havent been on a plane since october
dawsongirl 07-14-2007, 01:06 AM I think because it was nonstop and it was annoying the other passengers
Like being on a plane with 100 other people isn't already annoying, what with the talkers, and the people who kick the seat, and the annoying jerk inthe seat next to you, and of course the $5 bag of chips. And yet we manage to live with it. Some people need a damn chill pill.

What was to control?? He was being a normal 2 year old. He wasn't throwing a tantrum.

exactly. i've never heard of any "no excessive talking or we'll turn around and kick you off" rule on an airplane. he wasn't disrupting the flight.
even if the other passengers didn't defend the mother to the stewardess, it's hard to hear in planes; the farthest away someone else could have even heard the kid talking at normal volume was probably just a few rows.
and really, did it not inconvience the other passengers that they had to turn around and go all the way back from where they came from just to drop off someone who wasn't a being threat to the flight or anyone on it?
maybe next time i go somewhere public, i should tell EVERYONE present to stop talking because it's annoying me, and try to get them kicked out of the place if they don't.

Just checking to see if Benadryl is used as a sedative:
WARNING
NEVER give Benadryl or any other sedatives to infants under 1 year of age for sleep. Do not allow daycare providers to give sedatives to your infants. Always consult your child's physician before using sedatives for sleep in children.
SIDE EFFECTS/SAFETY
Antihistamines can cause drowsiness, dry mouth, and sometimes, upset stomach.
Instead of drowsiness, some children will have an opposite effect and get "revved-up". This is more of a nuisance than a medical concern.
Antihistamines can be given with any antibiotic, Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, decongestants and cough suppressants.
Should not be given for Croup (dries the air passages).

Anyone singing that should be thrown off the plane ... in midair
Seriously, what the hell has hapeened to customer service? This stewardess obviously should not be workling with people if a baby can get under her skin that easy.
Scoobiedoo30 07-14-2007, 05:53 PM will someone tell me what is wrong with saying bye bye to the airplane
Mikado 07-14-2007, 06:04 PM will someone tell me what is wrong with saying bye bye to the airplane
Well, maybe on her next flight, some of the passengers will get the stewardess kicked off for annoying them by repeatedly saying "Coffee, tea or milk?" ; that would be poetic justice! :p
Personally, I think anyone with young children should boycott Continental, THAT would get a message across! ( But, being that I'm childless and a Canadian, for me it's a moot point.....not to mention that you'd have to put a machine gun to my head, to get me on a jet. )
