View Full Version : Let's make this a fun thread everyone, Grade each season and explain why
TVFactFan 07-11-2007, 06:21 PM Here are my grades
Season 1 was a B, very fun season to watch with only one weak ep but overall pretty good. Weak ep was James Religious friend ep.
Season 2 was a A-, this season was when the show took off and James evans was at his best. Not one dull moment during season 2 but the only wea ep was Willona's dating the bald guy
Season 3 was a C+, John Amos was missing in more than 2 eps, Jimmy walker was missing in 1 ep, esther Rolle was missing in one ep and the worst ep of the series was in this season-"THE BABY"
Season 4 was a C+, even though no Amos, there was still some very creative and fun eps like the Warlord ep and when the Evans were robbed.
Season 5 was a D- only because of Poppo, Cool Breeze, and Head, if it wasn't for them I would have given this season a F all because of Janet jackson
Season 6 was a D because by this time the series was out of gas, the only bright spot of season 6 was Florifda homcoming ep and House Hunting. Othe than that very BLAND season
So state your grades and EXPLANATIONS to give the thread a very interesting and enjoyable flow
Ireneparalegal 07-11-2007, 08:06 PM I can't grade each season because there are some episodes that are great, some that are good and some that are real bad and they happen in each season.

You can't summarize???-lol
GARFIELDKOOL 07-11-2007, 09:11 PM Season 1 I will give a B- because the show was good, but it really hadn't taken off yet, plus the acting by the younger stars wasn't that polished yet. also, the writing could have been better.
Season 2 gets an A, I do believe this was the peak season where everything gelled. Great stories, and great episodes.
Season 3 gets another B- Still decent episodes. if James were in more episodes, it would get a higher grade.
Season 4 gets a C. No James, they still some watchable episodes.
Season 5 gets a D. The show lost dept right here and the show gets real silly from this point on.
Season 6 gets an E. Was very unwatchable. If Keith wasn't on here, this season probably would gets a D.
Ireneparalegal 07-11-2007, 09:17 PM Season one is a "B+" it was still in its infancy, but it was enough to get your attention and keep it to see what would happen next.
Season two is when it all came together. Like Kool said, it was polished and the characters worked so well together. I give that season an "A".
Season three is an "A-". Only because James was still a part of the show.
The rest of the seasons are a generalized "C" because James is not there.
There are great episodes and lots of duds.
Brian Damage 07-11-2007, 09:32 PM Season 1 A: You could see this was going to be a very "special" kind of show.
Season 2 A+: This season was simply Dy-No-Mite!
Season 3: B+: Still very good, but less James and tension behind the scenes affected the show a bit.
Season 4: C+: Some good episodes, but without James, the show was just somewhat hollow.
Season 5: D: No Florida, JJ as a mature adult, it was an entirely different show.
Season 6: D+: Florida returns, I think that helped, but just didn't have zip.
Brieannas21 07-11-2007, 11:38 PM Season 1 and 2 A++ Because everyone had great chemistry with each other
Season 3 A- JJ silliness just wasn't funny, started to get really old
Season 4 D- Just hate that season, it only had a couple ok episodes, plus James was gone and it just wasn't the same after that.
Season 5 F- Both Flo and James were gone and that season just stunk up to high heaven.
Season 6 C -It wasn't that bad, but it was showing it's age, I just hate the way it ended. If we actually got to see the Evens in their new apartments and whatnot then it would've gotten a higher score.

you was right on with season 5's grade but please tell me how season 6 gets a higher grade than season 4???-lol

Because the episodes, Snow Storm, Florida's Homecoming 1-4, A Matter of Mothers, Traveling Christmas are my favorite episodes from season 6. And those 7 episodes gave season 6 a slight edge, so that's why I gave it a C.
Janice Johnson 07-12-2007, 12:30 PM To me, Season 4 seemed to be struggling. I liked Season 5 better than Season 4. I think I'm the only person who liked Season 5 better than Season 4. The Penny miniseries was really good............................ And Thelma Moves Out was pure gold. I loved all of season 5. I get a weird feeling watching Season 4(and not in a very good way).................
TVLegend 12-02-2020, 10:59 PM Bump
TVLegend 12-02-2020, 11:47 PM Season 1 was a B-, it was a nice season the only con was there were only thirteen episodes, it sort of seemed like a “test season” to see how the show would go. Plus, the episodes weren’t as upbeat and exciting and as fun to watch episodes from Seasons 2-4 and the show was just starting.
Season 2 was a A, like some said, this was when the show took off. There were a lot of great and legendary episodes. Most of my all time favorite episodes are from this season. My favorite Season 2 episodes were The Gang Parts I and II, Florida, The Matchmaker, Sometimes There’s No Bottom In The Bottle, The Nude, The Dinner Party, The Lunch Money Ripoff, and The Houseguest.
Season 3 was a B+, it was a good season but this was when the J.J. character started getting overexposed and the front burner of the show. You could tell that John Amos and Esther Rolle were annoyed and ticked off by this. Also, the episode got more serious. But despite that, overall it was an enjoyable and pretty good season overall.
Season 4 was a C+, the season had some potential but was lost because John Amos left and James got killed off, it just simply wasn’t the same. The family needed a man of the house, a father figure, and a leader. Also, notice how Wilona’s character became rather feisty, J.J. got less goofy and immature and got more mature and serious, and Bookman was seen a lot more frequently, although Johnny Brown didn’t get a billing until Season 5 this season. This season was okay and had some good episodes, but like I said, it wasn’t the same without James. I liked Carl, but there’s NO way in real life that Florida would marry Carl, who was an atheist when she was quite a religious person and so soon and quick and sudden after James died. And to be honest, Carl was not all that good of a replacement for James.
Season 5 was a DEFINITE D-, God, this season was a total TRAINWRECK. Florida left, which hurt the show EVEN more, J.J. became “the man of the house” but for some reason was goofed and immatured up again, Michael and Wilona got boring and dull, Bookman became overexposed, and good lord, Penny got added. If it weren’t for Poppo, Cool Breeze, Head, and Mrs. Bookman, this season would’ve gotten a F.
Season 6 was a C-, Esther Rolle came back, which was a good thing, but unfortunately, it was too late to save the show so that hardly did anything. J.J. cleaned up his act and got mature and serious for good, Penny’s role got decreased a lot, and Bookman’s role got decreased the slightest. There were a lot of cons but the main con was the addition of that jerk Keith, Thelma’s husband, who did all the repetitive impressions all the time.

Only with season 2, I gave it a A- because Florida was missing in one of the eps
GoldenTV 12-06-2020, 03:41 AM Season 1 "C": The show was trying to find its footing with Micheal as the voice of Norman Lear discussing the day's issues.
Season 2 "B": The subject got lighter and situations more funnier than season 1. And Micheal became less militant
Season 3 "A": The show really got rolling in this season and was firing on all cylinders as everybody got comfortable in their roles. And Jams became more funnier than other seasons.
Season 4 "B": In this season JJ kind of grows up and stop being a clown. Stand out episode such as "Florida's Night Out", "Grandpa's Visit" and "The Hustle" whee kids selling under wear.
Season 5 "B-": Notwithstanding the first four episodes of this season with Penny, the rest of episodes are pretty solid with Willona doing great job for filling the void left by James and Florida. With outstanding episodes such "The Boarder","Where There's Smoke" and "Bye-Bye Bookman".
Season 6 "B+": The interaction between Florida and JJ are the funniest in this season as they team up with Florida playing the part strait man character against JJ.
Sonny Carson 12-15-2020, 01:27 AM Season 1-A-
The Show was getting on it’s feet. Some great episodes, and some really good. My two faves are ‘Sex And The Evans Family’, and ‘Black Jesus’. The only episode I don’t care for is ‘Junior The Senior’. I cringe at J.J’s answer for ‘Boxer Rebellion’.
Season 2-A+
The show just got better this season. As with most Norman Lear show’s, the second is the best. It starts out great with ‘’Floria Flips’, and it get’s even stronger around ‘The Nude’ to the Lunch Money ripoff. The only episode I don’t like is ‘Florida the matchmaker’ and the episode is alright.
Season 3-B+
Still a strong season with some good writing. But you have John Amos not in 4 episodes, and J.J. in that stupid chicken hat. I don’t care for ‘The Baby’ episode, but it has two of my favorite episodes in ‘Cleatus’, and ‘Sweet Daddy Williams.
Season 4-C+
Well killing of John Amos took the greatness out of this show. It made it a fairly decent, but inconsistent show. It has the tragic two parter with it’s great acting, but is hard to watch sometimes. You get some good episodes early on like ‘Michael The Warlord’. ‘J.J’s New Career’ two parted, and ‘Rich Is Better Than Poor’. But than you get lackluster with ‘Judy Cohen, and ‘The Comedian and The Loan Shark’. Also the Carl storyline was not needed.
Season 5-D
A season with a couple of good episodes, some watchable, and some bad ones. I don’t hate ‘Penny’ but she doesn’t add much.
Season 6-C
IMO we get back on the right track with bringing Esther Rolle
back. J.J. matures and only two episodes about Penny. I’m not a huge Keith fan, but he’s not horrible. I also really like the last episode.
