Which sets make your DVD Wall of Shame?

I don't know....but I think my Scrubs Season Five set skips a little bit....but it's alright...I just try not to watch it...anyways...wall of shame....I honestly cannot think of any titles...but I did like that blog overall....I liked skees53's thoughts the best on WKRP in Cincinatti (even though I don't have the set or like the show from this website I have seen what crap it is for the fans) and the Happy Days one was funny too (Happy Bir-Oh that needs to be copyrighted too or something along those lines...lol) Overall I liked it and I thought it was dead-on and yeah you're right on all of those sets. Kinda/sorta shocked you didn't include Family Ties S1 though....but the edits were small but still...

In fact what I would really love is a rant on Paramount by skees....Solomon err maybe (his rants are pretty dead-on I guess)...and Sony and every bad company out there....and I don't know...I honestly think that would be awesome but it probably wouldn't happen.

ALF - Season 1
Too Close for Comfort - Season 1

The only reason I bought either one of those sets was because it had been a long time since I'd seen those shows. I really wanted to see them again and I knew they were never gonna be on tv, at least for a while. I paid about $40.00 for TCFC season 1 and $30.00 for ALF season 1. I think they should have lowered the prices a little bit since those sets had nothing but syndicated episodes. Well I believe the first season of ALF had ONE unedited episode(the hour long one), but still there were 24 edited episodes on that set. I didn't even bother picking up the rest of the seasons of ALF. At least TCFC season 2 had unedited episodes.

I thought he mentioned that....or were you saying which you thought were the worst from the list?

Spot on commentary.

The only thing I would add is that for Golden Girls Season 7, I called Buena Vista to complain, and they mailed me replacement discs.

As for the music, I think a lot of times they don't even call the publishers (not the recording companies, who are more cooperative) to see how much it costs and they just go ahead and replace the music right away. That's how Stephen J. Cannell Productions did it with the masters of his shows supplied to Anchor Bay.

There was a Canadian disc of ALF with three hour-long episodes, all uncut and with "NBC In Stereo Where Available" tags still there. They looked fine to me. The company was called VSC and I wish they could have gotten the rights to the whole series before Lion's Gate (lions are cats; Alf eats cats, maybe that has something to do with this debacle?). Maybe a company outside North America will get the rights there and do it right.

As for WKRP, they don't even have the rights for the music for broadcast; they expired while MTM was owned by International Family Entertainment. They could have renewed them at any time to include home video, they just didn't.

And another thing, studios need to restore and remaster the original elements, not just to sell more DVDs, but to save them for the future. You can't restore videotape in the same way that you restore film, but there are services who can rejuvenate degraded videotape. As for filmed shows, The Waltons (not a sitcom but the best example I could come up with) varies between adequate and awful in terms of picture quality. The 2-hour Thanksgiving episode from season 2 has noticeable color fading issues. Other episodes have tape splices from broken film. And throughout there are color fluctuations.

I also hate the removal of original logos. Sony's one of the worst offenders, but they occasionally do something good; Embassy managed to survive on Silver Spoons and 227, but not the early eps of Married with Children. Not to mention the fact that Screen Gems was on TV Land's copies of Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie, but not the DVDs! CBS/Paramount is pretty bad; before the Viacom breakup they occasionally kept them on (the miniseries Shogun has the Paramount Blue Mountain with the logo music in 5.1 surround sound!), but now they're gone. Fox is okay with MTM, but older 20th Century Fox TV logos they have trouble keeping (M*A*S*H and early Simpsons, for instance, are missing them).

I'm also surprised how many people say that screwed-up sets are "better than nothing." I agree, if you mean "not better than anything."

I love the arrogant nature of studios, isn't it great there is some pinhead in an office over in Burbank (?) deciding that those copies look dull or tired, lets stick the "revitalized" syndicated episodes on the DVD set ... its for our own good!
Has nobody ever sued for a "Complete Season" not being complete? They should be.

Cheaper packaging doesn't much bother me, if it means a cheaper price, its funny that Home Improvement Season 6 (& 7) are cheaper than the soon-to-be-released Wild Hogs movie, I can clearly see which is of greater value!
I'm not too sure on syndicated episodes on that set, at best 1 scene is missing (which seems to be confirmed), but I found nothing else - the 3D episode was no different than what I saw on UK TV and they don't air syndicated episodes here ... I suppose its possible that a full episode isn't availible at all now?
I'm not sure about that video compression issue, seemed fine on my set.

Roseanne: Season 1 is on my list, Season 6 & 7 are not far behind with their lack of features ... Anchor Bay, Starz, whoever must try stay on our good sides with their failures (or Carsey Werners) on Season 1 ... Australia got unedited episodes when a different company released it, albeit after the AB tradgedy.

I can't think of any others.

This isn't a sitcom either (but the best example I can come up with that hasn't been mentioned yet). When BCI released The Best of The Match Game DVD set last November, many folks including myself had problems with disc 4. The photo gallery didn't work, and with most of the episodes, the picture pixelated, the audio skipped frequently and you couldn't recognize what's going on. I got a replacement set that had THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. That was so frustrating.

The Mama's Family dvd gets my vote.

Here us Mama's Family fans waited and hoped and voted(at that Tvshowsondvd.com place) and wrote for them to release the show on dvd, and then when they do, not only are they the television versions with scenes cut out, but there are absolutely no extras whatsoever.

I didn't buy this dvd(did borrow it from the library though) and will not vote for them to bring out the next season(nor buy it) until and unless they give us the un-edited versions with extras.

Jeffersons Season 5 DVD for not giving fans the full length ep of "George and Louise in a Bind"

That's My Mama season 1 and 2 for having all syndicated eps on both sets.

Three's Company Season 4 for not showing the TAG SCENE of "Ralph's Rival"

Jeffersons Season 5 DVD for not giving fans the full length ep of "George and Louise in a Bind"

I think that was on the season 4 set, but I could be wrong.

Every Paramount/CBS set you listed was dead-on. I own every one, and the only set I am happy with is Sabrina the Teenage Witch: Season 1.

And when you listed Home Improvement: S6, I could understand, because the packaging was absolutely terrible, but what episodes are edited? I've already watched the entire set, and I didn't find any edited episodes.

Somebody on Amazon wrote that the Halloween episode was missing a scene, a scene where Larry The Halloween Guy meets Al at Tooltime ... I seem to remember a scene like that in the episode, it wasn't there on the set.

The 3D didn't seem edited to me.

More Sony screw-ups (they used to be the King of Screw-ups):

—Sanford and Son Season 2: "Blood is Thicker than Junk" is a syndicated print, yet one of the scenes missing from the DVD version was on TV Land's tape.
—Sanford and Son Season 3: "This Little TV Went To Market"; another syndie butchering
—Sanford and Son Season 6: "A Matter of Silence"; syndie on DVD, available uncut from Columbia House VHS.

—Soap, Season 1: Two cut episodes on DVD that were uncut on the Columbia House VHS, as well as the omission of Jodie singing "There is Nothing Like a Dame" in the second episode, which was cleared on the Columbia House VHS version.
—Soap, Season 4: The last 10 episodes were five hour shows, but they are presented here as half-hour shows with stuff missing. They were uncut on Columbia House VHS

—Good Times Season 6: Cut versions of Florida's Homecoming Part 1 and 2, while the Columbia House VHS presented them in their uncut hour-long format. Also Florida's Favorite Passenger Part 2, which was uncut on Columbia House VHS is cut on DVD.

—The Facts of Life Season 1: "Overachieving" has 30 seconds missing that were seen on Comcast TubeTime version and possibly Columbia House VHS.

—Archie Bunker's Place Season 1: Part 1 of pilot episode in syndie version. The uncut, hour-long pilot can be seen in full at the Museum of Television and Radio.

There is no excuse for this. None whatsoever.

The only dvd I have that is mentioned is Too Close For Comfort S1. I was a bit upset that the episodes turned out to be edited versions, however, that is one of my all time favorite series. That show hasn't aired on tv or cable in many many many years so if I had to choose between seeing edited episodes or not seeing them at all, edited is better than nothing. I have more than 60 tv box sets and I can honestly say that none of them are bad enough to be in the dvd hall of shame.

The 3D episodes was edited by like 10 seconds, just to make the transfer from 3D to Non-3D like it is on the DVD. and I don't remember that scene from the Halloween episode.

Problem is they dont own the rights to the the uncut episodes. So you either take the edited episodes or none at all. Quite frankly with this show I would take the edited episodes. At least it is on DVD. There are some shows I think that will never make it to DVD cause of certain problems with music & such. Perfect example of that is I bet we never see The Wonder Years on DVD. If we did it would be cut to crap.

I can live with certain shows having edited episodes & if they dont have any extras big deal. Most of my DVD sets I never watch the extras. I figure what's the point when you probably only watch them once.

My vote for wall of shame is Beverly Hills 90210. The music replacements on this set are crap IMO. Perfect example is the episode where the girls are having the slumper party & suppose to be dancing to Billy Idol's Mony Mony but the song they replaced it with does not go with the scene & it's a joke.

I put any dvd set on the wall of shame that has the theme music replaced or the dvd is cut to crap because of music rights. Those are the ones people should really be peeved about.

When I was watching every episode of "Soap" on DVD, I noticed, besides the poor picture quality of the show, there were two season one episodes with the season three opening credits. I don't know for a fact, but I have the feeling that "Soap" had the syndicated the episodes. If I'm wrong, please let me know, I hope I'm wrong. I didn't time the episodes or anything, they just seemed so choppy. And plus there was a scene in one of the episode recaps that wasn't in the episode before it. It's been a few months since I watched the DVDs, so I can't remember which one it is.

I refuse to buy a set made up of cut episodes, because buying it sends the message that cutting corners is okay. Of course, when you don't buy it the only thing they think is that no one wants the show. So you have to actually contact them and tell them why you didn't buy them.

Okay, some of you might get mad at me for this. I have purchased all of the seasons sets of I Love Lucy. What really bothers me about these is that they still us the heart on satin opening from 1956 that was done for reruns. They have the original openings, and most of the commercials, for all of the episodes (except a few of the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour). Why not give us sets that have full, unedited episodes that aired the way they did back in the '50s. Maybe CBS DVD should look into releasing a DVD set of the top ten episodes as originally aired, commercials and all. There is no law that says you can not use old cigarrett (sp) commericals on DVD sets. And why did they release the Lucille Ball - Desi Arnaz Show as the 7th, 8th, and 9th seasons of I Love Lucy? They could have some special packaging and made it really special. It could really have gotten people's attention as something new.

CBS DVD should also look into working with Desilu, Too and Lucille Ball Productions (and other companies that own the rights to the shows) all of the television specials Lucille did over through out her career. They could also release a DVD set of all the shows she guessed starred on. There are included clips on the Here's Lucy DVD set that her children help release, but why not release the entire episodes? And what about release the entire series of The Lucy Show and Life with Lucy. CBS Paramont owns part of the rights to Life with Lucy seeing that they own the Arron Spelling library.

And by the way, why in the world has CBS DVD not released sets of some of their classic Desilu series such as Our Miss Brooks and December Bride. They own the rights to them (at least most of the rights) and it should be easy to release them once the films are located and digitized. This would also be a great way to preserve two of the most important sitcoms of the 1950s, ones that have not been on the air since the 1970s. They could also release the entire series of the Desilu Westinghouse Playhouse and other Desilu shows. CBS has an amazing archive they simple are not utilizing.

And why not go all out and release The Ed Wynn Show, Texaco Star Theatre, Studio One, Burns and Allen, and all of the Jackie Gleason series on DVD, or at least make them available to PBS. So they might not be of the highest quality, so freaking what!

Thanx,
William

I'd love to see those shows but CBS probably thinks nobody remembers them ( the same reason TV Land won't air rare shows). I never saw December Bride and the only Our Miss Brooks I ever saw was the 1956 movie.

I don't know if they'll redo them on DVD, but I would re-buy them in HD if they did this.

Unfortunately, these elements may not exist at all, that's the problem. If the original elements are gone forever, there's nothing anyone can do.

But when original elements DO exist, and there is nothing stopping them from utilizing them other than apathy, they should be used at all times.

I wish Disney would've included the 3D elements from the Season 6 episode of Home Improvement along with 3D glasses to view it. I never saw that episode during it's first run and it's pretty obvious when watching that there were several illusions in that episode.

I think that scene in the Halloween show was added for syndication. I saw the episode when it first aired and by time length, it was actually a little shorter, so they added that little bit of dialogue to lengthen it for syndication (or to make up for a scene that had to be cut) and for TBS. By the way, how does it start on the DVD? Does it start with Jill with the boys in the Taylor kitchen with Jill? I think that's how it originally aired. Oh, and in "The Flirting Game", I think there was an added scene for syndication as well.

The studios probably just let the original copies of the episodes degrade (if they don't just throw them away or tape over them), they take better care of the syndicated copies because the $ comes from syndication. Releasing shows for the home market was not even thought of 20 or 30 years ago. A lot of the distributors don't even own the rights to the original episodes. A lot of the original music is removed because they probably think it will increase the cost of the sets for the buyer.

No, the episode starts (as with every Halloween episode) with Tim and Al at Tool Time, and of course Tim and Al doing quick pranks on each other. Then the opening credits play, and then the next scene is with Jill and the boys in the kitchen. So obviously, the first scene was cut for syndication, which means the scene previsouly stated before with Tim and Larry at Tool Time is nonexistent.

And, they really should've included that scene in 3-D as well! I would have loved to have seen that again. And, if they are giviing us episodes uncut, then why should it be a major problem to put a pair of 3-D glasses in each set? It's not like each pair of glasses cost $100 . . .

I think you're right, the first scene was cut for syndication, I'll have to look the next time the episode is on TBS or anywhere for that matter, and compare with the DVD (I haven't bought it or Season 5 as of yet) on that particular episode. I know when it originally aired on ABC it had the kitchen scene with Jill and the boys, but I think syndication added that to make up for the cut footage in the opening scene at "Tool Time", I'm not really sure, again TBS doesn't run their "Home" episodes in a cycle, so it can be one different episode after another from a different season altogether.

I also agree about the 3-D episode not being included. It should've been added as at least a bonus episode, with the glasses included as well.

Also, Disney should have (and hopefully they will in the future) but they should've included the uncut, full-length pilots of their TV cartoons. They should realize that these are never seen on Toon Disney, only in their two and four and five part versions, and never in their original full-length versions. There's no reason to release the same shows seen on Toon Disney when the full-length pilots are still probably in the hands of Disney. But for the sacrifice of Rebecca singing that song, which I think a lot of young kids would love, the "Home Is Where The Heart Is", we got the scene with Baloo and Kit knocking out the pirates. Still, it would've been nice to include the pilot movies in their uncut glory.

I bought the first season of FN and it was not mastered from the original 35mm prints. When the show aired back in 1967 (and I was there) the series always began with a teaser. The first season release the show begins with the theme and it's not even the theme to the first season. The upbeat, jazzy music heard is from the Nun's third season not first. The music in the pilot episode is the music originally heard in seasons 1 and 2. So boo on the Flying Nun S1 release.

Another to add to DVD Shame-Married WIth Children Season 3. David Garrison's last show and the Guttercats were on there. There is 2 versions (not counting the syndicated one) of this episode. When Bud tells the slut they are dismissed, he also says "and you call yourselves sluts". I saw this scene and taped it when it first aired. However allover airings don't have this.

Add to the list:
Everybody Hates Chris is also edited for music. Which has me wondering does the promo Dvd season 1 set on Ebay was edited.

What I Like About You: opening credits are gone

Darkwing Duck and Talespin should be considered since they both have episodes that have been banned by Disney.

And can anybody image how butchered Muppet Babies would be on DVD with all those clips from other shows?

Season 3 of "The Flintstones" has one edited episode "The Big Move" that is missing an entire scene (my favorite one where Fred, in the scene before having been tossed into a pool by a snobbish friend who said, "Everyone into the pew-el!" is now at work suffering from a cold and he sarcastically repeats, "Everyone into the pew-el!") and also used an outdated H/B tag instead of the one used on all uncut episodes.

Also in the Wall of Shame is the music replacement on Sesons 2-4 of "Quantum Leap". Only Seasons 1 and 5 had intact music.

Did that episode you mentioned, Eric was shown in its entirety during The Flintstones 4th of July marathon?

Also, cast this vote into the Wall, Magilla Gorilla: The Complete Series. A series of 23 episodes from the classic 1964 Hanna-Barbera cartoon series. From what I've read is the transfers were of poor quality, the colors were a bit brighter than others while some prints looked faded. And for some who want to hear Magilla's theme song, it's not included on the damn set!!!

I'd like to mention a DVD set I got of THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES from a company called Diamond Entertainment. Not only are most of the episodes (which are some of the black-and-white ones) edited; they're not even shown in any kind of order. And they don't even have the opening and closing theme! They just have some generic, bluegrass, banjo music. And instead of the original announcer, they just have some guy attemping to do, what sounds like, an Elvis Presley impression and he's not very good at it!
To be fair, though, some episodes are unedited and the audio and video's pretty good.

The DVD you bought is a bootleg, hence the missing theme...that's still in copyright.
With a new law the show is now back in full copyright, so you may see a decent DVD before too long.

While "Hawaii Five-O" S1 deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, "Hawaii Five-O" S2 should go into the Wall of Shame. One episode ("Bored, She Hung Herself") is left off, and several of the rest are edited from their original presentations in 1969-70.

Yea, I heard that the season two set is a real mess. One episode missing and others are cut versions. Fans of Hawaii Five-O should send the studio a message and refuse to buy this junk.

From all on the rants that I have read,I'm glad thet I don't wasted too much time buying T.V. shows on DVD.I figure that they were going to :cuss: it up.Just like when I brought some episodes of DRAGNET(The B/W version)they adding some jive music to it,thus ruining it.All episodes should be uncut, unedited, diginally remastered with all original logos, opening credits, and all of the bells and whistles. And the attitude of some companies;if I was a producer, director, star or creator of a show and they would have gave me their :cuss: to kiss,I would have responed in the following::mad: :smash: :angryfire :boxing: puke: :thumbsdow  :cuss: :soapbox: ohno: :mumble: :mooner: :yousuck: ,then I would have gotton mad!!!

If there were a TV DVD producing studio as a whole to add the the wall of shame, it's definitely got to be CBS/Paramount. I just looked at the DVD set fo The Fugitive today, and of course it had the disclaimer "music has been changed for this home entertainment release" and of course "some episodes may be edited from their original network versions". This is absurd. Are there ANY releases by CBS Paramount that don't have edits or music replacements? THey don't give a damn about their fans. They're not even trying. How much music could some of the shows possibly have? It's like they won't even TRY to clear one or two songs. I will never blind buy a CBS Paramount release again. To top it off even shows still airing that have only been around a year or two have music replacements. This is inexcusible!

The DVD you bought is a bootleg, hence the missing theme...that's still in copyright.
With a new law the show is now back in full copyright, so you may see a decent DVD before too long.
yes; I got the DVD set of THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES: THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION and I just have one word that best describes it-AWESOME!!!!! And I hear that season 2 is the same!:) :) :)

Now; if only someone would release the rest of the series and do just as good a job with it.
