I turned on AGS during one of the many yellow flags during the Pepsi 400. In the episode "Stranger in Town", there was a different Floyd the barber! I have been watching reruns of AGS for about 30 years, and I never noticed the different actor (but it has probably been 20 years since I've seen this episode).

According to Wikipedia, "He (Floyd the Barber) was first seen in episode #12, "Stranger in Town", where he was played by actor Walter Baldwin. Baldwin established the running gag of Floyd's inability to trim sideburns evenly, which continued throughout the run of the show. Baldwin portrayed Floyd for just one episode; from 1960 on, the part was played by Howard McNear, the actor most commonly associated with the role."

Does anyone know why Walter Baldwin was replaced?

If it is the same man, it looks like he had recurring roles on Nanny & the Professor (as Mr. Trimble) and Petticoat Junction/Green Acres (as Grandpappy Miller). It doesn't look like he died until 1977.

In that book that came out in the 80's, AG talks about the first man to play Floyd and says he was replaced because "he couldn't remember his lines and he wasn't funny." Then it also says they reshot his scenes with Howard McNear. So if Walter Baldwin is that man being talked about, they obviously did not reshoot all his scenes. Of course, he seemed to look okay to the viewers, but who knows how much trouble it was to get his brief scenes done. Anyway, for an old actor who couldn't remember his lines, he did have a noticeable amount of credits after the TAGS ep in which he is seen as Floyd. So I wonder if there was still another actor who played Floyd who was the one who couldn't remember lines and wasn't funny.

Two questions:

1. After seeing "The Bank Job" episode where we saw an pharmacy other than Walker's, it reminded me that the gentleman in "Stranger in Town" was going to buy a gas station. They lead you to believe that he may have bought it (by the end of the episode the owner offers it to him). Was there ever any mention of a gas station other than Wally's after this episode?

2. Did Howard McNear have some health problems during the 1962 season?

I caught part of the episode where Floyd lies to women via correspondence. One "rich widow" comes to visit. It turns out she leached off of rich men.

But in that episode, Howard McNear was very energetic and fluid in his motions.

The next day, there was another 1962 episode, "Convicts at Large", where Barney & Floyd are taken hostage by the three women escaped convicts. Floyd spends a lot of that episode sitting.

Did he have a small stroke between the two episodes? Wasn't he out for a year or so after having a stroke?

EDIT/UPDATE: I saw the whole episode last night. He is limber in other scenes. The part I saw a few nights earlier is about the only part of the show episode where he just sits.
