Mister Rogers was a Pittsburgh educational TV icon -- but now his teachings are coming under attack.

In a Wall Street Journal article this week, Don Chance, a professor at Louisiana State University, sees a problem with students who feel entitled and decided, "We can blame Mister Rogers ... he's representative of a culture of excessive doting."

Standing in front of part of the original set, former show cast member David Newell, also known as Mister McFeely, says Mister Rogers didn't just tell kids they were special, he also taught hard work and discipline.

"I guess it's a little frustrating because it shows not everybody knows what Fred is doing on television," said Newell. "I think it's an easy way to draw attention to the subject. It's easy to blame Fred and it gets your attention."

The newspaper article cited a San Diego State University study which found signs of narcissism in college students has risen for 25 years.

But psychologist Hedda Sharapan who works in Fred Rogers Production Company, said Mister Rogers' words of support were just a basis for kids to learn other lessons.

"I think this is a very complicated question. That’s why blaming it on Mister Rogers is just absurd," said Sharapan.

Mr. Rogers is not to blame if todays college age kids are so full of themselves.

Rediculous! MRN was a show that taught politeness and respect for others. I personally wasnt that big a fan...I only watched for the trolly, but, to accuse this show of anything but good lessons for children, is not only innacurate, but, downright ludicrous! If you want to put the blame on why todays kids are so irrespectful, look at their parents and the way they are raised.

A society that gives out tropies to everyone who participated, who treats every child like they're a precious snowflake. EVery little word and poot that a child makes until they're 18 is treasured...children are treated like little princes and princesses.

And then they wonder why kids feel entitled like they do by the time they get to college?

I agree with you, Cat! Prof. Don Chance really needs to get a life-he should be ashamed of himself for blaming Fred Rogers for his own failings. Chance needs to take responsibility for his own failings. Don't forget, in addition to being an educational TV icon in Pittsburgh, Fred Rogers was also an ordained pastor in the church. Don Chance is just bitter, but that's his problem and no one else's.

Mr. Rogers taught kids educational things and brought joy and also was a positive influence to children. If anything this crack pot professor should be blamed!

I agree. I'm originally from Pittburgh and I find that just down right insulting. I have great respect and high regard for that man. I wish I would've met him, almost did. I now work for a UHF public station in Moline, IL We still run Mrn early on sunday morning. I learned a lot from him and he will remain a great person. I think that professor should rethink what he said because there are too many people who are going to be sending him hate mail. The professor is stupid he does not know nothing. a so called expert

I read somewhere that years ago, someone stole Mr. Rogers' car from the lot where "Neighborhood" taped. Several scripts were in the backseat, and the thief must have read them and had a change of heart. The next day, the car was back on the lot unharmed. I don't think they ever found out who stole the car. Really says a lot, doesn't it??

You had Bert/Felix, the uptight, nervous and fastidious one, and Ernie/Oscar, the laidback, easygoing, fun-loving slob. Through it all, the opposites were still best friends/roommates. Then the PC police came in, and the rest is history...:rolleyes:

I know someone who won't let her young son watch "Sesame Street" because Bert and Ernie are gay! First of all, I highly doubt that they are gay. And second, even if they are, it's a kids show. It's not like they're going to have sex on camera or something. And third..... THEY'RE MUPPETS!!!! I agree with them being The Odd Couple of Sesame Street.

As for Mister Rogers, I've always loved his show and I still do. Whenever I deliver something to another department in the store (I work at Kroger and on Wednesdays, I send supplies to all the departments) I always say "Speedy Delivery." Of course, people don't seem to get the reference, lol.
