It was an extremely difficult day for my family today, as we had to put our beloved dog of 6 years to sleep. :( Ever since she had her surgery on her teeth several months back, she just hadn't been the same, and when she was put on thyroid medicine for her low thyroid, she became really sluggish, and disoriented. It got really bad on the Fourth of July though as she kept having seizures, and had basically lost the ability to walk, eat, and control her bladder and bowels. By today, after seeing her have multiple seizures, we just couldn't take seeing her suffer any longer, so my mom and I brought her into the vet, and had her put down. She looked so peaceful, and I made sure that my face was the last face she saw, and that mine and my mom's voice were the last she heard. Salem was an awesome dog, and was one of a kind, and I am going to miss her terribly!! I take comfort though in knowing that I may see her again one day, and that she's no longer suffering, and up in Heaven running around with Harley!! :) I :heart: you Salem, and you will ALWAYS be in my heart. I'll see you at The Rainbow Bridge my friend!!!!!!! :crying:

It is a very difficult thing to have to put down a pet. 6 years seems so young too, You did what you needed to make sure Salem didn't have to suffer anymore.

I know when I had to put my cat down several years ago it was so hard and I second guessed my decision daily but ultimately I knew that prolonging her suffering would be selfish on my part.

I hope you can get through the grieving process soon and then just remember all the joy that Salem brought to you and your family.

Dearest Brad, I am sorry to hear of this. I am so saddened to know that the hardest thing a pet owner must face is the death of their beloved pet. I know what you went through. I too had to put to sleep our beloved cat, Taz. I too made sure our faces were the last she seen just before she left us. I really am sorry that you are going through this. I can only hope that the memories of your beloved Salem will forever be in your heart. Salem is at peace now and no longer suffering. My heart and sympathies go out to you and your family!

I'm so very sorry, Brad. :( I know exactly what you are going through right now. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss Duke with all my heart. I've carried on, but I still miss him terribly.

I'm so deeply sorry Brad. I know how much you and your family loved, adored Salem. Losing a beloved pet is one of life's truest heartaches. My baby Foxy has been gone almost two years now, and I haven't gotten through a week without breaking up over him. That has surprised me. Our pets love us so unconditionally and with such trust. We share our lives with them, and it's often as difficult as losing a human loved one, for me anyway.

Take heart and solace in knowing that you did everything to give Salem a wonderful life, and that you were with her until her final breath. :heart:

I'm so sorry to hear about Salem. :( I've been through it and it does really hurt bad. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. They are, like Sonny said, a member of the family.

It breaks my heart to hear about a pet dying so I'm sorry to hear about Salem. 6 years old? I know what you're going through. My dear, sweet Phoebe died in Oct. at just 8 years old. Just know that Salem is romping in the land of Milk Bones and Pupperoni's and is free of pain.

Brad, I'm so sorry for your loss. :( I lost my pet rabbits within the past couple of years and even though I didn't have them for very long, I loved them as much as you loved your dog. She was very lucky to be part of such a loving family. May she rest in peace. :( :rip: :hug:

I'm so sorry for your loss. Salem sounded like a wonderful friend. I've lost a lot of pets. I haven't had a dog in years because I don't know if I can go through the loss again. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

First of all, I would just like to apologize for not responding to this thread sooner. This has just been a very difficult few days for me, and it's been incredibly difficult to talk about this subject, so I apologize for that. This has been a very emotional time as it was the first time I'v'e ever had to put a pet to sleep, and I must say, it was one of the toughest things I've ever done in my life. Also the suddeness of the whole thing has been tough to deal with. It's just amazing to me how she could have been relatively healthy, and then all of a sudden withing a three day period, deteriorate so much. That's been one of the toughest parts about this.

With all that said though, I want to thank you all for your true, and heartfelt condolences, and words of encouragement. For those who know me well, you know what an important part of my life Salem was, and so you know more than anyone how much people's kindness has meant to me in this tough time. Thank you Janice for your kindness, for the beautiful ecard, and for that beautiful post you put up about having to put a pet down. Thank you Jen for the beautiful song lyrics you posted, and thank you Tim, (Mr. Stefani) for the heartfelt words and sympathy you showed me in your P.M. to me. Like I said in response to your pm, it meant more to me than you can ever imagine, and your words actually comforted me enough to where I finally got a goodnight's sleep last night for the first time since her death. And to all of you, thanks again for everything!!! You guys' are ALWAYS there when I need a little support, and kindness, and you all just proved it once again. Her ashes are down at the vet, but they're charging us $200.00 for them, so we won't be able to pick them up for awhile. It wouldn't be so hard if not for the $250.00 it costed to put her down, and the $1,400 it costed to get her teeth pulled a few months back. When we do get them though, we plan on taking the ashes down to the River which was her favorite place, and letting her frolic freely down there for eternity. :)

Thanks Janice!! It feels good to know that your presence is missed by some when you're not around for awhile. :) I've been telling mom that she shouldn't pay the bill since they decieved her originally, and since none of Salem's problems started until after they did her teeth, but she told me that when she doesn't pay, they charge her debit card with interest, so there's no way she can get around it unfortunately. :(
