Around here, it's really between Carvel and Friendly's, in terms of ice cream cakes. They're both sold in the grocery store. They have small, medium and larger rectangular ones. I think they both taste equally good, but I think Friendly's is a better decorated cake. They both have nice seasonal decorations, holiday, sports, that sort of thing.

Baskin Robbins, by default. Carvel's must be an East Coast thing because I've never heard of it before now. As for Friendly's (sigh), we only have one left in our area. There used to be three: one by my house, and one around the corner from Grandma's, and she used to take us there quite often. The one by my home is now a professional building (The Friendly Professional Building, go figure), and the one by Grandma's is now part of a subdivision. :crying:

I'm still partial to Carvel. Growing up as a kid there was no Baskin Robbin's but Carvel was three blocks from my house. On those summer nights, after playing stickball or punch ball in the streets and darkness fell, about 8 of us would march to Carvel's and I would get the thick shake for a quarter. We would bring our goodies home, sit on garbage cans and discuss the three baseball teams in the local area, Giants, Dodgers and the Yanks. That thick shake after playing for two or three hours sure tasted good.

I've never heard of Carvel, so I am guessing we don't have any locations near me. I will go with Baskin Robbins. I love their cherries jubilees ice cream and their ice cream cakes! Great! Now I want a slice of ice cream cake, and it's only 7:46 a.m.

It's said that one should not do commercials for his own product but get a professional. Exceptions to this rule include Frank Perdue of Perdue chickens, Dave Saunders from Wendy's and gravely voiced Victor Carvel of Carvel's. He had the long beak, spoke with a N.Y. accent but I bet sold a lot of ice cream. In N.Y. he was on all the time. Carvel was selling soft ice cream before Robbin's, Dairy queen and Good Humor, though I can remember the Good Humor truck coming by my house every night, ringing the bell. Good Humor was great for fudge pops, popsicles and twin pops. Loved the grape one, two grapes sticks in one pop. Frozen ice water with flavoring but quenching.

I'll say Baskin Robbins since I haven't even heard of Carvels.

Never realized it but Carvel's must have been a Eastern thing. They saturated the N.Y. area back in the 50's and 60's. I wish I had a penny for each flying saucer they sold. It's amazing when to one a certain procuct is so popular, you think it's a national brand and then you find out it's just in your area.

I know this thread is a little old, but I just had to bump it up as I never got to share my new experience. ;)

I just had to laugh out loud when I was at the Las Vegas airport on my way back home three weeks ago. I came across a Carvel! Because of this thread, I had to try it out for dessert after my Burger King dinner. Carvel's items were limited to only sundaes and ice cream cones, but that's understandable considering they're located at an airport. So, I couldn't taste anything new or exciting. I just had their vanilla sundae with hot fudge. It was quite expensive at $5, but it wasn't bad. It was tasty, but I can't base that on their overall ice cream. Maybe I will try out more flavors at an actual Carvel in another city and outside of an airport terminal.

There's a Carvel in San Diego, about a few minutes from where I live. I've never had it, though. I like Baskin Robbins but Coldstone Creamery blows all ice cream places out of the water.
