Solomon forgot to mention in my opinion the GREATEST TV DVD release of all-time in Seinfeld. Which was promoted to the moon an chock full of extras. Sure, its only for one show, but it was was one of the most popular shows ever, and those DVD's are better than anything ever released by any company in my opinion.

Solomon also didn't mention the NewsRadio sets that have a lot of commentary tracks on each set. He also didn't mention how quickly Sony released The King of Queens sets to market, a show which is still relevant.

Surely he knows that they can't please everyone. And if no one is buying a set, then why on earth would they continue to spend more money just to appeal to a small grooup of people?

I'm pretty happy with Sony's releases, Sure, I want them to release the rest of Barney Miller. But maybe the set didn't sell well enough? Sony's not going to spend thousands to make me one DVD set and I'll get over it.

Well I'm defintley not talking about shows like NewsRadio, I'm talking about the Classic comedies of the 1970's. And if they can include extras on DVD release for Newsradio, then why not do it for shows like Maude, All in the family, sanford and son, the Jeffersons and One day at a time? And as far as fast releases for King of Queens, that's a bad example because it's a show that was CURRENT.

Ant-Lox, how can you be satisfied with Sony releases? They give us nothing as bonus features, slow waits, and high prices. You call that satisfying? Sure, they do have good packaging for most series (especially the Jeffersons S3-6 and Who's the Boss? S1), but that's about it.

Great review again, Solomon. You definitely summed up greatly about Sony's slot waiting period, and their "one release a year" deal they have going with The Jeffersons. One thing you didn't mention was their abandonment of series like Who's the Boss? and there "No word" series like The Nanny and The Facts of Life. THey just give us cheap quality (such as fitting 11 episodes onto a disc like they did with Mad About You S1) and we shouldn't have to put up with it!

And Sony should understand that we would love to get more FUN FACTS on DVD not in a booklet about the shows we loved for years. There should always be a bonus feature included with every season released on DVD. And that would get fans very excited to buy the upcoming seasons of that particular show since would have something to look forward to besides good quality and UNEDITED eps.

You say you are talking about the 70s sitcoms but then you compare them to releases of 80s/90s shows like Fresh Prince and Full House? Also did you look at seasons past the first 1? Sure Season 1 of Fresh Prince had a nice documentary and Full House Season 1 had the unaired pilot. But since then it has been stupid montages and gag reels (which BTW Fresh Prince would normally air gag reels at the end during the credits anyway)

Most of these older shows seem to always have tagged on special features that are useless. I think there is no excuse to not have cast/crew commentary on at least a few episodes. Such as on Boy Meets World, which had commentary on 4 or 5 episodes

For truly classic shows they should simply give us the entire series. For newer show this would be so expensive that most of us could not afford it. I would love to see CBS Paramount release some of their shows from the 1950s like Our Miss Brooks and December Bride, but they would only be marketable as complete series. The good thing about shows this old is that everyone is dead and there were no residuals, so cost of producing the DVDs goes way down.

More shows need to be released as complete series and much lower prices. I think paying $50 for a single season of a show from the 80s or earlier is crazy. If they want to sell more, they need to price lower.

Solomon, for one time I can say I completely agree with you 100 percent on this one. Even if we WERE talking about TV DVD's released by Sony for ALL decades, SEINFELD still wouldn't be an excuse for the other pure crap that Sony releases. Sometimes I'm actually ashamed to have that Sony logo gracing certain DVD sets of mine, namely ALL IN THE FAMILY, one of my all-time favorite shows, but the presentation is like "Wow, they took all of 3 milliseconds to process this design." Totally non-creative, non-provoking, non-stimulating, and lackluster. The inside of the ALL IN THE FAMILY boxsets contains all of one full-sleeve photo of the series, which holds the episode booklet and crappy previews book. COME ON! It simply sucks, even shows with no extras can usually at least be colorful and the sets themselves can be fun to look at. But it's just "bleh" with 95 percent of Sony Television's library, classic or modern. Take a look at STELLAR sets like the best-of OZZIE AND HARRIET, or the always colorful sets of HANNA-BARBERA properties: just do SOMETHING!

By the way Solomon, I got the perfect rant for you for next week: PARAMOUNT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Abandoned series, hit-and-run with extras (usually the first set contains a few extras then subsequent seasons have nothing), and another company with horrible packaging (well this is a new problem I have with PHE--- prior to FAMILY TIES Season One's situation, this never was a problem with PHE, they actually used to have great packaging).

Anyway, great rant this week Solomon, I feel like I'm ready to start a rally or something!

I just want some creativity when it comes Bonus Features on the DVD by Sony. Damm, just bring something to our attention about the show we don't know to make the DVD a great buy. All the Norman lear shows on DVD have NOTHING and that is ridiculous

While reading your rant, I was thinking to myself, don't like it, don't buy it. But then I got to thinking. I'm a huge All in the Family nut and yea it was nice to see footage I haven't seen on TVLand but they could have added alittle something extra. Maybe commenatry on episodes. Like Jean Stapleton could have done one on 'Edith's Problem.' Sally Struthers could have done one on 'Gloria Discovers Womens Lib', you know, the episodes about there character just to hear what they were thinking during that time or they could do one of there favorite episodes. I think the only special feature on season 2 is the episode booklet with a photo of Meathead and Archie along with a bonus preview.

As much as I don't like sony, I don't like Paramount even more. How many Sony sets have on the back on their covers "music has been changed" or even worse "some episodes have been edited from their broadcast". At least with Sony I usually don't have to worry about getting cut episodes and replaced music.

Sony had some editing issues. The 3 part ep-"George and Louise in a Bind" on the Season 5 DVD of The Jeffersons was Cut for some reason.

Sony has gotten better with the editing (save for the Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman episode 22 fiasco), but they're cutting corners on picture quality left and right. I read the review of Bewitched Season 5 and it seems like they stopped doing any remastering from the original film elements; I'm dreading exactly how bad "Cousin Serena Strikes Again Part 1" actually looks, as it was described as "almost unwatchable". What's Happening Now Season 1 has inconsistent color from shot to shot in some episodes (which seems to be a problem with a lot of taped shows, but one that is easily fixed).

Then there's the covers. They stopped using the fonts that were used on the show and just pick them at random. Could they have picked a more generic font for the Silver Spoons cover? Why not the one used on the show? And that background just SCREAMS Photoshop rush job. Who approves these covers?

But you want to talk lazy? What's Happening Now disc 3 has Martin Lawrence and Ken Sagoes, who only appeared in the third season, on the main menu behind Rerun, who never appeared with them.

Have they ever done a shred of advertising on any of their DVDs other than Seinfeld? That tacky little insert doesn't cut it, and a release announcement in TVshowsondvd.com is not advertising.

The only good thing I can say is that they try to get as much of the original music cleared as possible. The fact that Married with Children uses a replacement theme for seasons 3 and on is because the publishers of the song "Love and Marriage" were greedy.

While Sony is a business that needs to make money, that's merely the means to an end; the end is supposed to be satisfying their consumers. And they are barely passable.

I'm not even starting on Paramount or Fox or Warner Bros.

If these shows are not selling it is not the shows' fault. It's the studios' fault; their half-hearted efforts to put these shows out, coupled with general lack of awareness.

This is sad, especially considering that between the releases of seasons 3-6 we've lost Isabel Sanford, Franklin Cover and Mike Evans. I would've loved extras with them on the first two seasons of The Jeffersons. Season 3 could have featured a tribute to Isabel of some sort.

I think Solomon's comments are always hilarious. I myself have purchased many Sony dvds and I do think they should include some extras on these sets, particulary a blooper or gag reel. Maybe the reason for not including any extras, like cast interviews is because none of the actors want to participate. I also hate it when they make us wait SOOO long between seasons, and I REALLY hate it when they release Season 1 / 2 - and that's it! I have 227, Who's the Boss?, Diff'rent Strokes, etc. Where are the rest? I recently purchased What's Happening Now!! and Silver Spoons (Two of my favorites) and I just PRAY that they release the rest of the seasons soon.

Warner does give us nice extras on their first season sets, and some of their second season sets, but after that, we get nothing. Full House had great extras in season 1, but since season 4 we've gotten nothing. Same thing with Fresh Prince. And, they leave a lot of their releases abandoned. The biggest of those are Murphy Brown, Living Single, and Growing Pains, plus they have all those shows that don't even have a season set of yet, like Perfect Strangers, Family Matters, Step by Step, and Alice. But, I'd have to say Sony is a little worse than Warner Bros.

can you give me an example? I do want WB to release the last two seasons of fresh prince
The following list is from tvshowsondvd.com, most likely the "sounds hopeful" ones won't be released, as well as the "sounds doubtful" ones. I'm especially mad about probably never getting Perfect Strangers on dvd, and I'm as disappointed in Warner Bros as the previous poster, roseanne88-97.

Sounds Hopeful:

* Perfect Strangers is being evaluated for Season 1 release in 2008.
* Third Watch is being evaluated for 2008 release.
* Drew Carey Show - Season 2 decision will be based on sales of just-released first season.
* Falcon's Crest - no plans at this time, but they will keep it under consideration.
* Flamingo Road - no plans at this time, but they will keep it under consideration.
* Alice is being evaluated for further DVD release, but no plans yet.
* Regarding further DVDs for Mama's Family, Warner does not own the unedited masters, only the syndicated versions. Another season is being evaluated, but Warner needs to know if fans will support the release if the syndication cuts of the episodes are all that they can provide.
* Warner will consider Eight is Enough
* Looking into releasing Shazam! (live-action and animated) on DVD.
* Silverhawks is strongly being considered.
* Cow And Chicken - Being Evaluated.
* The Zeta Project - Being Evaluated.
* Night Court - No plans to continue yet, but will continue to consider.
* Growing Pains - No plans to continue yet, but will continue to consider.
* Life Goes On - No plans to continue yet, but will continue to consider.
* Family Matters - Being evaluated for a potential 2008 release, but music costs are fairly high.
* BBC titles My Famly - Season 3 and Life on Mars are in consideration, but no plans.
* Warner will look into TV-DVD releases of Alvin and the Chipmunks based on a suggestion during the chat.
* No plans yet for releases of "telefilm sequels" and "spinoffs" such as Gilligan's Island/Planet or Dukes/Enos, but Warner is considering the best way to approach this.
* Warner hopes to continue releasing Fresh Prince but music costs are high; they are trying to address that.
* No plans yet on season sets of Maverick but they will continue to look into it.
* Thundarr the Barbarian is being looked into.
* Teen Titans has been selling well in the current "full screen" format, and Warner is willing to consider adding widescreen versions in the future.
* Herculoids is being looked into.
* Sea Lab 2020 is being looked into.
* Duck Dodgers is being looked into.
* Jetson's ('80s version) is being looked into.
* Jonny Quest ('80s version) is being looked into.
* The Pebbles and Bam Bam Show is being looked into.
* No plans for Dexter's Laboratory at this time, but willing to consider it.
* No plans for Johnny Bravo at this time, but willing to consider it.
* Courtship of Eddie's Father is on the long list, but no plans yet.
* Please Don't Eat the Daisies is on the long list, but no plans yet.
* Chico and the man is on the long list, but no plans yet.

Sounds Doubtful:

* Knots Landing - Sales of Season 1 were very soft, nowhere near expectations. No plans for Season 2, but Warner recognized a lot of support for this title during the chat and it was pointed out that S2 introduced Donna Mills as "Abby Ewing", a very popular element to the show that fans would have been waiting for.
* Murphy Brown - Sales of Season 1 were not high enough to warrant further releases, especially in light of high music costs. "If we see a high surge in sales for season 1 we'll happily consider a season 2 release", they say.
* Regarding China Beach: "a great show which we love to release but the music clearance cost are extremely high."
* Everwood fans make it clear that there is support for this title on DVD, but music costs are prohibitive and Warner is evaluating if they can make it work with music substitution, but at this time they just don't know.
* Home Front has an avid fan base that Warner appreciates, but music is "very very high" and don't know if the DVD base is large enough to release it; they are keeping it on the long list, though.
* The single-disc Static Shock release had disappointing sales and further releases are unlikely.
* Step By Step - No plans at this time.
* Hogan Family - No plans at this time.
* Hangin' with Mr. Cooper - No plans at this time.
* No plans for more Huckleberry Hound
* Brimstone - no plans.
* Opposite Sex - no plans.
* Run of the House - no plans.
* Fish Police - no plans.
* Bucky O'Hare - no plans.
* Spaced - no plans.
* Freddy's Nightmares - no plans.
* No plans for 1984 mini-series Lace or the 1985 sequel, Lace 2.
* Quick Draw McGraw is highly doubtful at this time due to music clearance issues.
* No plans for more live-action Superboy at this time.
* No plans for '60s show The Roaring '20s at this time.
* No plans for Maximum Bob at this time.
* No plans for BBC's The Goodies at this time.
* No plans for Our House at this time.
* No plans for Head of the Class at this time.
* No plans for Love Sidney at this time.
* No plans for Huck Finn at this time.
* No plans at this time for Against the Grain, NBC's '90s football-themed family drama
* No plans for Captain Planet at this time.
* No plans for Jamie Foxx - Season 2 at this time.
* No plans for Living Single - Season 2 at this time.
* No plans for Wayans Brothers - Season 2 at this time.
* No plans for ROC at this time.
* No plans for Redd Foxx Show at this time.
* Warner states that they do not own the rights to the Twin Peaks pilot episode.
* Ed is not a title Warner Brothers owns.
* Parker Lewis Can't Lose is not a title Warner Brothers owns.

I feel that when it comes to classic tv, hurry up and get the seasons out ASAP. Why drag it on and on for so long? If they are going to release one season of a classic, then be prepared to release the others soon. If not, then don't release season one at all.

Partridge Family S1 had bonus features, but S2 didn't and where are S3 and S4?

Silver Spoons in my opinion stinks. They chopped up the closing credits, true to form for Sony, way back to the Screen Gems days. They also clipped scenes before breaks.

They need to license their productions to Shout! Factory. They also need to give control of their massive old show library to some entity which would acutally release the material. Dennis the Menace, Burns and Allen, Father Knows Best, Donna Reed Show, etc.

I exactly agree with you. If Sony has no interest in relasing future seasons of shows like Who's the Boss?, THe Jeffersons, Mad About You, THe Nanny, or the Facts of Life, why release them? Why couldn't they just seel them to a smaller, lower quality company who would have interest in them. like Shout!, First Look, or Anchor Bay?

I got Benson today...and it is GREAT! Excellent quality extras Solomon...you will be pleased with Sony.

Well, pav, no one is happier to hear that than I am. Do you think it's possible Sony is just getting better at putting together these DVDS as time goes by?

A lot of times I don't even start buying a show until more than one season is released.

That attitude is what keeps second seasons from getting released.

There's an easy way to deduce what's coming from Sony:
—If it predates Seinfeld, expect a barebones first season (or, like Silver Spoons, "exclusive bonus features" so exclusive they don't even waht you to see them), and if you're lucky all the episodes will be uncut
—If it predates Bewitched, forget it.

Warner Bros. is on thin ice with because of Mama's Family. Not only will I not support edited releases, but I will not support ANY WB TV DVDs if they pull this again.
