With the "Star Trek" prequel set to begin shooting in October, rumors are that there may be plans in place to spin-off a new Star Trek TV series from it.

Quoting Robert Orci, part of the two-man scripting team for the upcoming prequel movie, Moviehole said, "I'm sure CBS is thinking about that. That's not [something] we're thinking about. We're just thinking about the movie. Certainly, I don't know how they could not think about that."

As far as the movie itself, Orci was silent on who would be starring in the new "Trek" offering sayin: "Kirk is in the movie. Some kind of Kirk. ... We literally haven't cast them yet. It's actually one of the challenges, and so we're hoping to have something by Comic-Con [in San Diego in July], but we'll see,"

It would be surprising not to see a spin-off from the movie. It seems that fans can't get enough of the popular franchise, and are always willing to sit and view the latest Trek extension.

Any decision on doing a spinoff series will depend greatly on how well the movie does.

No blockbuster box office, and there probably won't be a spinoff series.

I've been a Star Trek fan for 20 years but I have no desire to see anymore prequels in either film form or television form. This entire movie seems like a bad idea.

I agree. They should be moving forward in the Star Trek Universe, not backward.

I just can't imagine anyone but William Shatner playing Kirk. That is one of many reasons that the whole idea of a prequel doesn't interest me.

Exactly!....And they really should make a new movie with the DS9 or Voyager cast.....I wouldn't even be THAT bothered if they made it a big hollywood blockbuster film (I happened to like "First Contact" a lot)...A big war should happen, bringing some of the DS9 cast back together, along with some new characters....Or maybe another big Borg movie, with the Voyager crew.

I'm definately going to check out the upcoming prequal, probably the night it comes out, but I won't be walking in the theater with high hopes.

Who knows, maybe J.J Abrams will revive the Trek universe....He did afterall create the amazing shows of Felicity, Alias, and Lost. ;)

Amen to that, Could you see Hawaii 5-O star Jack Lord as Kirk? He was offered the role before Shatner but turned it down.

I also agree, they should move the series forward, take some chances.

Between the five series (six if you count the '70s animated series) and ten feature films, they've run Star Trek into the ground.

I watched the first few episodes of Enterprise, which was supposed to be a prequel to the original series. Of course, it looked a hell of a lot more sophisticated than the show that was supposed to "follow" it. You can't go back.

If they absolutely have to continue the franchise, go forward. Or merge it with Law & Order.
