...that it was stupid that they made up bad habits just for that episode? I mean Vera started smoking, Alice was a Chocoholic, Flo was addicted to coffee and Mel was a gambler.

I could see Mel as a gambler, but I think the others should have quit habits that were already incorporated unto the show. Such as, Flo give up men, Vera give up movies and Alice, well Alice didn't really have many bad habits. LOL

Yeah, the Vera thing was lame, although they did try to tie it into a movie (she had just watched a Betty Davis marathon or something, and "all she did was smoke smoke smoke"). Mel has gambled in other episodes, although I don't recall him doing it before that episode. Flo drank coffee on other episodes, so that's plausible. I guess they probably tried to pick stuff that they'd all have easy access to, for the comedic effect (back at Alice's apartment).

I agree with you Brian. It is one of those sitcom cliches. It is also using a plot that has been used who knows how many other times. For sure it was used on I Love Lucy. Each of the fab four had a bad habit. Ethel made noise while she ate, so that may not be fabricated. Fred jiggled his keys in his pockets constantly (never did that before), Lucy stirred her coffee long enough to make butter (she never did that before)...and Ricky tapped his fingers on the table (again, never did that before).

It's one of my favorite episodes, but yeah, some of the habits didn't make sense. It would been so much easier to believe if Flo and Vera had swapped habits - Flo as a smoker and Vera as a coffee drinker. Flo was definitely the type to go out smoking with the guys (that shot of her in the opening kills me every time lol), and imagine Vera addicted to caffeine lol

The way Vera acted sometimes, you'd think she was shooting caffeine into her veins.
