Travolta Echoes Cruise on Psychiatry
NEW YORK (AP) - John Travolta says his thinking is in line with fellow Scientologist Tom Cruise, who has publicly defended the religion's stance against psychiatry and the pharmaceutical industry.
Cruise, during a famously heated debate on NBC's "Today" show in 2005, criticized Brooke Shields for taking anti-depression drugs and berated host Matt Lauer for suggesting that psychiatric treatment might help some patients.
"I don't disagree with anything Tom says," Travolta says in the July issue of W magazine, on newsstands Friday. "How would I have presented it? Maybe differently than how he did, but it doesn't matter. I still think that if you analyze most of the school shootings, it is not gun control. It is (psychotropic) drugs at the bottom of it."
"I don't want to create controversy; I just have an opinion on things, and there is nothing wrong with stating your opinion if you are asked," he continues. "Everyone wants that right, and because you are famous doesn't mean you have less of a right."
Travolta, who also talks of his habit of going to bed at 6 or 7 in the morning and waking in the early afternoon, says being famous has little impact on how he lives his life.
"I will tell you the things that would be the same, fame or no fame," he says. "Being up all night would be the same. Liking empty restaurants, liking empty movie theaters - unless I am starring in it."
Travolta, 53, portrays Ms. Edna Turnblad in "Hairspray," the adaptation of the stage musical that was spun from the 1988 John Waters film of the same name. The new film opens July 20. The role, in which he dons a fat suit and feminine garb, has added fuel to ongoing speculation about his sexuality.
"I have never been compelled to share with you my bathroom habits or share with you my bedroom habits," says the married father of two. "Everyone has a right to privacy, so I have never felt - even though I am famous - that I had to share that with anybody."
Do the rumors bother him? Does he think they've affected his career?
"No and no," he says. "What affects your career is the quality of the product. I don't think anyone can hurt me."
"Hairspray," a New Line release, also stars Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer and Queen Latifah.
dawsongirl 06-20-2007, 05:21 AM Of course he's going to agree with Tom. If he didn't, he'd probably be lashed with whips and chains or something. They're like mindless robots.
And  to all who think playing the opposite sex or a gay person makes you gay. How naive.
Janice 06-20-2007, 11:25 AM I've never heard of gay rumors with Travolta. Other actors, but not him.
I've read quite often in the tabloids that one of Travolta's kids is autistic, and since Scientology frowns on psychiatry and drugs, the child has basically gone untreated.
Of course, don't quote me on this...

I thought it was Stallone that had the autistic kid - Travolta too? Boy those two have a lot of similarities in their lives.

Oh there's been LOADS of them Janice. Just google "Travolta kissing man"
If ain't gay/bi, he's certainly a very friendly fella!! ;)

Ireneparalegal 06-20-2007, 05:46 PM I've never heard of gay rumors with Travolta. Other actors, but not him.
True. However, in the 70's, there were persistent rumors that he was gay, simply because he DATED ONE LADY AT A TIME, and it was thought that the studios were behind this (such as in the old movie days where studios hid gay actors/actresses by having them date fellow movie studio stars). John has always been forthright and not controversial. He is different from the rest of the pack.
I agree with his stance that it wasn't what was said abt medication and psychiatry, it was HOW IT WAS DONE. Tom Cruise lashed out at Matt Laurer, he basically made himself look like a fool as if he knew everything abt psychiatry and everyone else who takes meds is wrong for doing so.
John's approach in Scientology is much like how most people are abt their own religion, low-keyed and avoid conflicts. I respect all religions until it is used as an excuse to murder, maim, make fun of others and especially when it is being shoved down my throat like those jehova witnesses who come to my door.
I have always followed John's career. I adore him for how he lives his life and how he helps others. He adores his wife and kids and it shows. You don't see his life in the stupid weekly gossip magazines, now I guess we know why, HE AVOIDS THEM by living his life in the evening. KUDOS TO JOHN!!!!:D
Janice 06-20-2007, 05:52 PM There's no way Travolta is gay; however, he states that he agrees with Cruise's views on psychiatry and medication. That disappoints me. I thought he was more open-minded and logical than Cruise.
Ireneparalegal 06-20-2007, 06:37 PM I have read an interview where Travolta stated that his views are HIS VIEWS, and he would never push those on others. He just believes that for himself, his family and others, that there are alternatives to medication and psychiatry. Up until Cruise met with Brooke Shields, Cruise felt that all medications, all psychiatrists and any related to those two were wrong. Travolta's views have been "there are other alternatives" and whatever works, is what you should do. Also his view has been don't readily accept the first thing you are told.
I know for a fact that I had accepted a psychiatrist's opinion abt my youngest daughter, she would be taking medications for Bipolar. I refuted his opinion after abt six months. I also came to learn that this doctor was readily issuing medications to many teens with "problems"...all of whom seemed to have been Bipolar. That was my red flag and I quickly stopped taking her to him and after a few visits with other specialists that my daughter is not Bipolar, but rather suffering from Depression due to her hiding the fact that she was gay. Once she came to me and told me her sexual orientation, she no longer needed meds, she felt open and free to be herself.

I think Travolta has crossed over to the dark side Irene. In this latest interview, he's on board with everything Cruise says.
"I don't disagree with anything Tom says," Travolta says in the July issue of W magazine, on newsstands Friday.

Hmmmm, definitely going to have to get that magazine and read the interview. You are scaring me Janice!

I don't mean to, and I don't like it anymore than you. I'm a big fan of Travolta myself. There could be more to the interview that adds context. Let's hope, lol.

Yeah, let's. I mean, he has always been forthright abt his views like I stated above without being overbearing. I hope the interview will not be a shocker. :(

Hmmm...that pic would seem to differ.....after all, the same thing was said for years about Rock Hudson, and in the end, he indeed was gay, either way, its his decision, after all. ( To be true to himself, i mean )

One picture of Travolta kissing another man doesn't make him gay. Who knows. He's Italian. You should see the mugs my husband's Sicilian family give each other. Sometimes it's meant to be a peck but one wrong turn of the cheek, and bingo, it's a lip-smack. It happens all the time. There's an old picture of my cousin grabbing my boob at a party, drinking and laughing our heads off. She's not gay, and neither am I, but if we were celebs, that's how it would look.

OMG, how funny your post. I just had an image of your cousin grabbing your boob! ;)
You are right, some pics can be construed to mean one thing when they are another. I am sure after all these years and the type of society we live in now, Travolta being gay would have already come out. Look at how many celebs have tried to keep it under wraps only to have it leak out somehow.

I never said the pic made him gay, just said it gave that impression, and that its possible that he is bi...but, again, only he knows for sure, and in the big picture of things, its really only his own business, either way.

I guess anything's possible, and I don't have the most reliable gaydar, lol...but something tells me that Travolta is a straight and devoted married man. Then again, in Hollyweird....;)

My cousin has the personality of Joan Rivers from years ago. She has everyone in stitches. When she wasn't grabbing my boob, she was grabbing my husband's....never mind.

Ireneparalegal 06-21-2007, 01:31 AM Exactly!!!, I was going to say the same thing; just two guys, greet each other with a peck on the lips, it means absolutely nothing; he is Italian, and that is part of their culture, it does not mean that they are gay!
I kiss people of the same gender on the lips all the time, but I am lesiban (which, of course there is nothing wrong with that), no, I am very straight.
 Good one Tara.
Hey, I wouldn't mind being in the middle of that smoochfest between John and any good looking man. ;) I'd prefer John all by myself though. :D

Me three. Pisses me off when people write off meds before they even do research. God that's ignorant.
And I don't mean Tom "I invented psychiatry just to debunk it" Cruise's form of "research".

Me four! Prozac saved my friggin' life. That, and a fantastic therapist.
Yeah, like a good diet could fix the fact I had been sexually molested by an immediate family member from the age of 5 to 11 yrs. Who would have thunk all those years I was suffering that all I needed was some castor oil.!
I'm not saying John is gay (and who gives a rat's ass if he was anyway other than Kelly maybe), but it sure doesn't look like either of those guys were looking for a cheek! My husband's Italian too, and if any guy ever hit him on the lips there'd be hell to pay! Accidently or not!
I will say that for John - he has his opinions, and can agree with Cruise if he likes, but he doesn't seem to be getting up on a soap box like Tom did a couple of years back like he was the Second Coming or something trying to CONVINCE the rest of us about his beliefs.
Irene - you'd love this. We have a Johova temple a couple of miles down the road from us. Every so often sure enough, you get the pair on your doorstep with their stupid little flyers. I'm dying to get a flyer of Satin worship - or even something from the Catholics, Jews, whoever and show up on THEIR doorstep with a big, dump grin wishing them a wonderful day and shoving my flyer at them. See how they like it for a change!!
Mr. Television 06-22-2007, 01:50 PM I think Scientology is bull****! Drugs and psychiatry has helped sooooooo many people.
I agree. I don't even consider it a religion.

My aunt shows up at the door with her bible and asks: "Would you like to convert to Catholism?", and my Uncle goes to the door ummm...wearing a smile and yells "What the #$%# do YOU want???????!!!!!!"; two very different yet effective ways to discourage Jehovahs from coming to the door! ( Moms family are weird, arent they? ) As for myself, i simply say "Not interested" and slam the door in their faces.
Mr. Stefani 06-22-2007, 01:58 PM I think Scientology is bull****! Drugs and psychiatry has helped sooooooo many people.
and they've also worsened/killed sooooo many people. If you read into Scientology, they dont completely frown upon certain prescrption drugs, they use it as a very very last resort. It's disgusting how easily prescribed meds are today.
catlover79 06-22-2007, 02:55 PM At least Travolta is being a bit more diplomatic on the subject than Cruise, and they are certainly entitled to their opinions. That said, I just wish they wouldn't talk about this at all. People have the right whether or not to see psychologists/psychiatrists and use antidepressants, so I wish they'd just drop it.
Brian Damage 06-24-2007, 11:33 AM and they've also worsened/killed sooooo many people.
Scientology is a farce and a fad, I don't take what they say seriously.
Brian Damage 06-24-2007, 11:57 AM Any prescibed meds can kill or worsen someone if not taken properly. That's what doctors are for, to help regulate what you take. I'd certainly trust a doctor over waiting for the Mother Ship to cure my pain.

Cathy...:brent You kill me lady! You and Monika (catlover) are just hilarious!
I also agree with what you and Monika state abt John. At least he doesn't get on a grand stand like Cruise did and make Scientology seem like this "magical religion" that is by far superior than anyone or anything. Making himself look like the fool and idiot that he really is. I have always respected how John has presented himself in public. He is a true gentleman, with class, looks, intelligience and a persona that is real and non-judgmental. He proved all that when Anna Nicole died and he was the only famous person (that I seen) who DIDN'T mock Anna's death, didn't have anything but NICE THINGS TO SAY ABT HER and embraced her and her son while working with her on the set of "Be Cool". He seemed genuinely hurt and saddened by her death and appeared as if he was holding back his tears. That is A REAL MAN. :D
