View Full Version : Esther Rolle's complaints about Carl are so ironic...
catlover79 06-18-2007, 11:49 PM ...because Carl was an atheist. Yet James was not exactly a religious man. He cursed and yelled a lot, and never said the grace. James also didn't go to church like Florida did. So I'm kind of puzzled that ER felt so strongly about it. I've been taking the seasons out of the library one by one, and this just struck me. What do you all think?

we don't know if Esther rolle ever complained about the Carl character because the source of where the info came from was never confirmed
SitcomGyrl1955 06-19-2007, 11:12 AM Well, for one thing James wasn't an atheist.....he believed in God. He just didn't go to church. Carl didn't believe in God at all, so I can see where ER might have had a problem with that.

but ther still is no source comfirming that she had a problem with the character
mstewart 06-19-2007, 11:18 AM The problem that Esther had with the whole Carl thing, among all the other issues she had with the show, was it was not quite a year when James passed away for Florida to go into a relationship, get engaged and married all in the same year. James and Florida had a deep love for each other and for him the way he died was devastating enough but to go into another relationship immediately was a bit much. I did not like the Carl character myself.
Florida Evans even changed that season and she was not as likable as she was in the James seasons. She was a little fun to be with and watch. It seemed like after James passed away Florida got more holier than thou, pissed off at the world and not as fun. Then I believe Esther was so unhappy with the way the show was going that it was projected on screen. That season compare it to the final season where Florida toned down a bit.

I'd like to see that show. Whenever an actor/actress is unhappy doing a show it often spills over on the character. ie: Bewitched season 8, Good Times season 4.

I have the THS of Good Times on DVD and will watch every second of it tonight and prove to you that there was never any mention of Esther Rolle not being happy with the carl character.

I see you like to make up stories because I just watched every second of the true hollywood story of Good times and there was never any mention of Esther Rolle not liking the carl Character. So from this point on anything you post will be viewed as a joke
An 80s Guy 06-26-2007, 09:41 PM I also watched it and don't see any mentioning of ER not liking the "Carl" character.

Talking solely abt the character Flo and the character Carl, then YES, I agree with you. James never mentioned religion as something he believed, relied upon, had enormous faith in, etc. He did talk to God once because of his own insecurity. Florida was the religious one in the house. I did see James bow his head at the dinner table as prayers were said.
Florida ending up with a man who was atheist is so out of character for her. I guess love is blind and dumb.
TVFactFan 06-26-2007, 10:54 PM I also watched it and don't see any mentioning of ER not liking the "Carl" character.
Posting False Information should result in a BAN-lol i agree, that's why I was confused everytime someone said something about Esther not liking the Carl Character because no one never posted a source of where the info came from

Here's another source of Esther's unhappiness of Florida quickly getting into a relationship so quickly: http://www.tv.com/good-times/florida-and-carl/episode/39123/summary.html
If you saw the E True Hollywood Story on Good Times even the producers acknowledged that they made a mistake in the Florida and Carl relationship. If wasn't Moses Gunn that Esther was unhappy about she was unhappy with the quickness of Florida getting involve with another man and just the whole direction of the show. It was an ongoing issue even when John Amos was on the show.
The tragic thing about this was the show could had went down as a classic but with all the backstage fighting that went on it came out in the performances.

Tv.com is not a source, plus they don't state where they got the info from so as far as I'm concerned the story is false

Isn't TV.com just like IMDB and Wikepedia, where anyone can insert information on their site? I am pretty sure it is.

Yes-lol Annd how do I know? Because I was the editor for the episode guides of CPO Sharkey and That's My Mama before the site turned into TV.COM. When I was the editor it was called tvtome.com

I liked it better when it was TvTome. I hate it now as TV.com. Not worth viewing. Only for the episode order do I even look at that site.

I agree, it was so much better when it was tvtome.com. I was addicted to that site in 2002/2003
mstewart 07-02-2007, 09:10 AM The show was plague by so much strife from season 1 up to the end. It's unfortunate because Good Times had the potential of being a classic series because it dealt with a family in poverty in a real manner plus the family sticking together through it.
One way to settle this. Does anyone have a whole transcript of that E! True Hollywwood Story on Good Times or a summary at least?

I already said I watched the THS of Good Times on DVD last week. There is nothing else to discuss on the Esther Rolle not liking the Carl Character because it's not true
