JJ wasn't supposed to be the fool of the show, he was comic relief. Has anyone realized that whenever a really serious moment came up, where the audience is like, "Oooh"(worried tone), JJ says or does something funny and the audience burst into laughter, even though they were just worried a few seconds ago?? But, the writers sometimes made JJ crack jokes or act silly when there was no reason for "comic relief" that's when audience members and TV watchers got annoyed with JJ(and apparently Esther and James). The writers should have not made the JJ character "funny" when there was no reason for comic relief, and maybe noone would have been annoyed in my opinion.

I always thought he was meant for comedy relief also but like Urkel from Family Matters, it did get overly annoying and even corny.
