I've wondered this myself. Anyone have insight to the minds at TVland?? Another thing that I found pecular, last night they showed 4 hours of The Andy Griffith Show. 4 eps played twice. Why not 8 different eps? TVland seems to do this a lot--repeating eps within 2 or 4 hours.

But Gunsmoke or Bonanza isn't reducing the airings of Sanford and Son on TV Land so I'm not sure I understand your question

I noticed that too. I guess they are airing more commecials late at night? I haven't paid too much attention, but did realize that the shows ended closer to quarter of or a quarter past the hour as the night wears on.

I think the admins of this site reported last year that the westerns bring in the ratings for them on the weekend. TVLand has made bad decisions since 2005, they would get shows air them for one or two weeks then it was off to late nights or Sunday mornings to be forgotten about. It would be nothing for them to change the schedule several times in the week.

Those shows were crazy popular when they aired in prime time so I guess that accounts for why somebody still wants to see them. Gunsmoke's popularity is amazing. It became a big hit when I Love Lucy was on and it was still in the top ten when All in the Family and Sanford were hits- personally I have never watched an episode of it and don't think I'm missing anything. Bonanza has been a big rerun favorite in my area, although that doesn't interest me either.

Keep in mind that when Gunsmoke/Bonanza was in primetime, there were only 3 Channels for Viewers to choose from, not 256 like it is today.

Yes, but if those shows ran for so long there must be something about them that people like (even though I don't care for either series and don't have the urge to analyze what the appeal is). I don't think that the people watching those shows now are just the same people who watched from the 50s to the 70s, just like the other shows that were #1 in the ratings in past seasons (Happy Days, All in the Family, Lucy etc etc) have picked up new fans since. There's something transcendent about a show that would make it appeal to people regardless of the era in which it was first broadcast and out of 256 channels someone will discover it and like it.

I watched Happy Days when it first aired, but find it strange viewing today- it looks like a weird mish mosh of eras- Fonzie in his 50s clothes, the girls in 60s miniskirts and everybody else running around in 70s-80s clothes and hairdos, but I am sure that there are people who weren't born when that show was made that like it a lot today.
