View Full Version : I have an odd question regarding cremation...sorry in advance for the topic
Ireneparalegal 06-16-2007, 07:48 PM I have always wondered, when someone is going to be cremated, they usually are viewed in a coffin that is not very expensive, wooden, so forth. I went to a viewing where the person was in a very expensive metal coffin. I know they don't put that coffin in the crematorium, so is that coffin used just for the viewing and then disposed of?
I have tried researching the net but it doesn't seem to answer this particular question.
Zoneboy 06-16-2007, 07:57 PM According to Wickedpedia:
A body to be cremated is first placed in a container for cremation, which can be a simple corrugated cardboard box or a wooden casket. Most casket manufacturers provide a line of caskets specially built for cremation. Another option is a cardboard box that fits inside a wooden shell designed to look like a traditional casket. After the funeral service the interior box is removed from the shell before cremation, permitting the shell to be reused.
Funeral homes may also offer rental caskets, which are traditional caskets used only for the duration of the services, after which the body is transferred to another container for cremation.

So, those caskets can be RE-USED for other bodies??????

If the person being put inside one is indeed dead, I'll doubt they'll do much complaining. ;)
coffield3 06-16-2007, 08:01 PM Are you thinking of being cremated irene?:)

Yeah, they're re-used. I have a bunch in my garage for Halloween.
(Just kidding.) ;)

Heck no.
I don't think the person who died will complain, but I sure wouldn't want my loved one put in a casket that has been "used" over and over again. Then again, my immediate family members have never been cremated, nor do the rest of us plan to.
I was curious because I wondered why one would purchase an expensive casket if only for a viewing.
coffield3 06-16-2007, 08:13 PM Im the same i want to be buried like everyone else has in my family! I wanna be in the earth!!!
coffield3 06-16-2007, 08:14 PM Yeah, they're re-used. I have a bunch in my garage for Halloween.

They might have just rented the casket, My guess is that the rental casket is disinfected after the body has been removed for cremation. I would be more concerned with putting a pair of previously rented bowling shoes on my feet than I would be over a loved one being put into a used casket.

Me, too. 136 days, 6 hours and 10 minutes (Pacific Time).
My display is in the family room. But I like your idea of setting it up in the living room. I think every house should have a year-'round Halloween display! :happyface
Janice 06-16-2007, 08:51 PM When my aunt died in 2001, she was cremated. I don't recall the details, but I remember my mother telling me that my aunt's husband didn't have much money. They had a viewing, and she was placed in a very nice casket. The funeral director told him he wasn't supposed to do that but he would make an exception, given the circumstances. Not sure if it was against the law or what, but my uncle was asked not to tell anyone. This particular funeral home has buried my family members going back about 30+ years, so it was a trust issue.
Sorry I can't remember the particulars Irene, but I do remember my mother stressing that her brother (the widower) wasn't supposed to tell people. I want to say it's illegal, at least here in Massachusetts.

Yeah, it's fun having a H-ween display all year. I go in there and turn on all the effects and sounds about once every two weeks.
Here are two views of the room without the spooky lights on...
