View Full Version : Lucy has Viv in tears?!
Frischman_Fan 06-11-2007, 09:52 PM Trivia section from tv.com:
Episode:Mr. and Mrs. tv show(4th season)
During rehearsal, the scene where Lucy tells Ethel that her dress will make her look like a test pattern, Lucy said it so mean that Vivian Vance broke character, started crying, and had to be calmed down.
Wonder if Lucy felt bad and apologized or if Viv was feeling sensitive that day.

It is hard to imagine that Viv would be personally hurt by a line someone else wrote for a show. After all, it wasn't even her dress. I watched the scene again and it just seems like another of the hundreds of quips and cutdowns the foursome traded off. Something else must have been going on that day for Viv to be on the verge of tears.
Funny that Lucy said the same thing to Ethel in "Mr. and Mrs. TV Show."
mrs.gingerhinkley 06-19-2007, 12:36 AM ewwww.... this is um, an interesting post.... poor Viv...
ethelmaepotter 07-08-2007, 11:04 PM I think by the fourth year, Vivian didn't allow Lucy to get to her that much. I think that is just another unfounded legend.
Ethelfan1993 04-23-2009, 10:20 AM Vivian struggled with the same mental illness that I struggle with, I can understand why she would cry about that. Especially if Lucy said it in a mean way.

I'm sorry that Viv suffered such an illness but it was all acting and Lucy got into her character...which made her the best actress of her day.
Jude The Obscure 04-28-2009, 11:03 AM Viv was tougher than she let on, esp by the time she got to The Lucy Show, she didn't let Lucy shove her or get her way on every little thing. When Viv announced she was leaving, Lucy did everything to keep Viv on.....Lucy knew that Viv was the dynamic she needed to keep the comedy flowing. When Viv guest starred later on TLS and HL, Lucy felt alive again with her work on stage, knowing her partner in crime was there. in fact, she wanted Viv to be back full time on HL, but Viv was starting to get sick and HL would be canceled by CBS.

All that coupled with the fact that they were as close as sisters in real life...they were inseparable...yes they had their spats, but they were very close friends.
Coffeecup 05-07-2009, 11:33 AM There was a scene in Ethel's birthday where I thought Lucy was a bit well bold in her line. In the beginning when Lucy is picking up little Ricky's blocks and Ethel comes in. She says something to Ethel about Fred not knowing her birthday. The line was a bit bold. Later in the scene Lucy has a more relax feeling. It was almost as if Lucy dreaded Ethel coming in. I know she was frightened. I haven't seen lucy in a while. I haven't been able to stay up til to see hallmark at 2:30am and can't tape the show.
Schmoopie 05-08-2009, 02:34 AM Interesting "Vivian Vance" trivia. Never knew about this before.
