I don't know what to think. Here's a few that I got off other message boards.

The guy that went into the bathroom was a hitman. Remember when Bobby and Tony were talking about that you never hear the one coming to get you? The series goes black as Tony dies. He never saw it coming. The whole series WAS Tony. With him dead.... all black.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

So..........with Tony’s arch enemy Phil dead, and Tony agreeing to a peace pact with Phil’s guy, MY ending is that Tony prospers. Oh the little fact that the guy hired to whack Tony goes in the restroom just before Meadow comes into the restaurant doesn’t bother me. If there’s ever a Soprano movie, or they come up with a new HBO series, it would be easy enough for the writer to show the hitman came out of the can, saw Meadow, or the table of Cub Scouts, and decided not to kill Tony.
GREAT ending!!!

No Easy Ending for 'The Sopranos'

NEW YORK (AP) - Tony Soprano carries on.

The much-awaited conclusion of HBO's "The Sopranos" arrived Sunday night in a frenzy of audience speculation. Would New Jersey mob boss Soprano live or be killed? Would his family die before his eyes? Would he go to jail? Be forced to enter witness protection? Would Brooklyn boss Phil Leotardo, who had ordered a hit on Tony, prevail?

In the end, the only ending that mattered was the one masterminded by "Sopranos" creator David Chase. And playing against viewer expectations, as always, Chase refused to stage a mass extermination, put the characters through any major transformations, or provide his viewers with comfortable closure. Or catharsis. After all, he declined to pass moral judgment on Tony - he reminded viewers all season what a thug Tony is, then gave him a pass.

But Chase was true to himself, and that's what made "The Sopranos" brilliant on Sunday night, and the 85 episodes that went before. The product of an artist with a bleak but incisive vision, "The Sopranos" has always existed on its own terms. It was challenging and elegant, but seldom tidy.

The only neat development in the finale was that Leotardo was crushed. Otherwise it was perversely non-earthshaking - just one last visit with the characters we have followed so devoutly since 1999.

Here was the funeral for Bobby Bacala, Tony's soldier and brother-in-law, who was shot dead on Leotardo's orders last week. Here was Tony (series star James Gandolfini) paying a hospital visit to his gravely injured consigliere, Silvio Dante, also targeted by Leotardo.

Tony's ne'er-do-well son A.J. (Robert Iler) continued to wail about the misery in the world, and voiced a fleeting urge to join the Army and go fight in Afghanistan (Tony persuaded him to get involved in filmmaking, instead). Daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) harped on her plans to be a lawyer.

Tony visits his senile Uncle Junior (Dominic Chianese) at the nursing home. "You and my dad, you two ran North Jersey," Tony prompts him.

"We did?" said Uncle Junior with no sign of recognition. "That's nice."

Despite suspicions to the contrary, neither Paulie Walnuts nor Patsy Parisi sold out Tony. And neither was whacked. Dr. Melfi, who kicked Tony out of therapy last week, made no last-minute appearance.

Sure, headaches lie ahead for Tony. The Feds are still after him. And Meadow's fiance, Patsy Jr., is a lawyer who may well be pursuing cases that intrude on Tony's business interests.

So what else is new?

The finale displayed their lives continuing, for better and worse, unaffected by the fact that the series is done. The implication was, they will go on as usual. We just won't be able to watch.

Of course, Leotardo (Frank Vincent) hit a dead end after Tony located him with the help of his favorite federal agent. The execution was a quick but classic "Sopranos" scene: Pulling up at a gas station with his wife, Leotardo made a grand show of telling his two young grandchildren in the back seat to "wave bye-bye" as he emerged from his SUV. The next moment he was on the pavement, shot in the head.

Then you heard the car roll over his head. Carunnnchh! Quick, clinical, even comical, this was the only violence during the hour.

Not that Chase (who wrote and directed this episode) didn't tease viewers with the threat of death in almost every scene.

This was never more true than in the final sequence. On the surface, it was nothing more momentous than Tony, his wife, Carmela (Edie Falco), Meadow and A.J. meeting for dinner at a cozy family restaurant.

When he arrived, Tony dropped a coin in the jukebox and played the classic Journey power ballad "Don't Stop Believing." Meanwhile, every moment seemed to foreshadow disaster: Suspicious-looking people coming in the door or sitting at a nearby table. Meadow on the street having trouble parallel parking her car. With every passing second, the audience was primed for tragedy. It was a scene both warm and fuzzy yet full of dread, setting every viewer's heart racing for no clear reason.

But nothing would happen. It was just a family gathering for dinner at a restaurant. Four people among many.

But then - with a jingle of the bell on the front door, Tony looked up, apparently seeing Meadow make her delayed entrance. Or could he have seen something awful - something her certainly deserved - about to come down?

Probably not. Almost certainly a false alarm. But we'll never know. With that, "The Sopranos" cut to black, leaving us enriched after eight years. And flustered. And fated to always wonder what happened next.

I don't know why, but I'm trying to figure out if it was a stroke of genius on Chase's part, or like you say, a letdown. That final scene was riveting. The tension was too much.

I am disapointed. I sat there thinking what a slap in the face to all the people that have continued to watch this show. I never thought of the sophs as being a show you have to really have deep thought about, so i didn't expect it to have a draw your own conclusion ending. I wanted it to go out with a bang.

I sat there thinking for 5 minutes afterwards was that supposed to be a metaphor for the mobster life, an edge of your seat thing, or were we seeing what tony was and when it blacked out that was the end of his life? So confusing.

The song they chose for the ending was fitting...Don't Stop Believing by Journey. Don't stop believing what could have happened.

Either way, Tony was ****ed. Carlo flipped, and he was going to stand trial. Why would Tony whack Phil, if Phil spared his life?

A little bit of both. I really think it was left open for a reason. I think Gandolfini was tired of the character and wanted to do something else, and so they said okay, but I also think what Chase did with the ending was brilliant, (not only because he used a Journey song) by leaving it open that way, we can only guess.

Didn't someone once say leave them wanting more??? And I think this is what was done, it leaves us wanting more, or just guessing our own interpretation of what Tony's fate is.

The same thing happened when Sex In The City ended, it left the fans wondering if Carrie and Mr. Big got married or what????

I guess I am in the minority here, because I really liked it, because I didn't expect it.

The end had me speechless. I can't believe they did a cliffhanger ending.
They certainly left me wanting more. I love the song Tony chose and it is fitting.

Phil Leotardo: Man! That was horrific. I can't help but feel bad for Phil's family even though he was Tony's enemy.

I don't get why Paulie considers the cat to be a jinx. To me, the cat seems to be good luck. I agree that it was weird how it constantly stares at Christopher's picture. Then when Paulie moves it, the cat finds it.

I didnt want to see a violent conclusion.Anything wouldve been bettere than that. Showing Tony sittin in a jail cell and finding out that the whole series was him writing a book wouldve been better than having half of the viewers think that their tvs went out.

 I know - Frank kept saying 'WHO is THAT?" We couldn't place her name until I saw the credits.

That's why I posted the WTF? I didn't want to give anything away - but it sure you left you wondering didn't it? All I could think is "Well, here comes the MOVIE!".

I think not only Tony got it (from the hitman in the washroom), but it could well be the entire family, less Meadow - that's why the suspense with Meadow parking the car just right - just enough delay for her to come in and see either her father whacked, or worse yet, her entire family - just like Phil's family at the gas station.

I think Tony still whacked Phil for retaliation for Bobby and Silvio, plus also to possibly spare his own life.

What makes me really wonder is that if Tony did get it in the end, who the hell is left to takeover - Pauly Walnuts? God help the mob if that were to happen! (I actually hoped if anyone else it would be Pauly that would get it - he grossed me out ever since he sniffed the girl's underwear a few seasons ago!) lol

I was very disappointed in the last episode. IMHO, this is one series on TV that did not shy away from being graphic or bold or whatever you want to call it, but then when it came to the last episode, to somehow use that as an excuse that David Chase did not want to "shock" Tony fans who have come to know him after eight years is a cop-out. This show was graphic and "in your face" in every way imaginable. So, if the black screen was to signify that Tony was whacked and did not see it or hear it coming, again, that is a cop-out, IMHO, at least. The worst part of it is that it leaves the Soprano's viewers and fans with a feeling of doubt or a feeling of being left up in the air.

This is all OPINION.....I have been holding this back for a long time because it is quite complicated and really cannot be expressed in this thread properly because of the so many brillant David Chase writings and producing.......bottom line is....at the time the series ended, chase was quoted as saying "Just watch the episodes, and the ending is right there" SO I DID, and analized...

first thing is Chase had a brillant way of creating the episode titles, like the one named Kennedy & Hiedi....the one where Chistopher dies, can anyone tell me why that episode is named that? I know the answer...but will wait for someone else to tell me....BTW....the one where Bobby is killed is named "The Blue Comet" named after the train he was purchasing at the time of his demise.

alright the ending in brief....the answer is all in episode #1 of the final season 6 titled "Members Only" in which a minor character tries to get out of the mob and eventually hangs himself, he is also a informent. The episode begins with a mysterious voiceover (very deep meanings) and shows each character, Bobby is shown with his trains (he eventually dies in a train shop), Meadow is shown stripping for her boyfriend (meaning she doesn't live up to her potential and probably winds up stripping, and in the finale, she can't even park the car... her character does change by the finale and does a complete 180% turn around and feels the goverment is against her father), Janis is shown alone breast feeding her baby (bobby of course dies) Christopher is not shown (dead)....anyway during the entire broken up into two parts season 6, Tony is constantly first seen lying down looking up bloated and deathlike......this is the same episode where he is shot by Uncle Junior....meaning he is shot in the first episode of season 6 and possibily the last of season 6.

While the crew is sitting around, someone busts the character who wants to get out that he is wearing a "Members Only" jacket and being out of fashion....when his wife finds out that Tony won't let him leave the mob, she is shown several times saying, "someone should put a bullet in his head"....

Flash now to the famous finale.....the man at the counter is wearing a jacket, it is not seen as a "members only" jacket as he looks suspious and enters the bathroom (ala "The Godfather).....now read the credits...all the people in the restaurant are credited as minor roles....except the man in the jacket, it says "Man in Members Only Jacket".....why wouldn't chase just say man who enters bathroom or at counter?, especially when you don't know he is in a "members only" jacket unless you read the credits......

translation OPINION.....a member of the widows family from the "members only" episode had him killed, as Chase stated he also asked HBO to originally give him a full 30 seconds of black as the episode ended....HBO thought it was too long, they settled on 10 seconds.......Chase didn't want the audience to see Tony killed, but cleverly came up with a way you could choose your own ending....

but you must admit, Chase did everything for a reason, right down to background music, TV shows playing in background, etc......like the obsure "The Jokers Wild" gameshow playing in the finale when Tony visits Junior, a show that hasn't even been seen on GSN in years! Also after Silvio is shot near the end of the series, the TV in the hospital is shown first playing a slicing and dicing infomercial translating he is probably brain dead.

Basically if you have the DVD's watch those two episodes back to back and it will all make sense.....the first and last episodes of the final season 6, which was broken up into two parts.

Thoughts???????
