View Full Version : Just found out that I failed the math part of the CA high school exit exam
freshprinceofLA 06-06-2007, 10:17 PM Well for those of you who don't know what the California High school exit exam is it's a test on english and math on the high school required math and english you must pass or you don't graduate! Even if you've gotten straight A's and you fail the exit exam you still don't graduate...
I pass the english part but failed the math part so i have to take the math part over again next year. I'm in 10th grade and I have 2 more chances. I'll just actaully try in my 11th grade year. But I feel so stupid cause that math was so basic you know mean, median, mode, averages and other things I forgot =(..
Number 9 Dream 06-06-2007, 10:19 PM Aw, I'm sorry, hun. Math is a hard subject--I can't tell you how many times I've failed basic things like median, mode, etc even in college. Just keep studying and do the practice problems in your book--hopefully it'll help you! :)

Thanks I'm gonna take some prep classes on the exit exam next school year before I take it again in the fall of next school yr
TripperFan 06-06-2007, 10:34 PM Hang in there. I sucked in math bigtime. Failed grade 9 and hated it all the way through.
Oddly, I ended up scoring a 98% on a mathematical aptitude test just a few years ago and enjoy it now. It's strange, but if I put math quizs into excel formulas I can figure out the answers better. I guess it's all in whatever way of learning it interests you.
Hope you're able to make it up with the extra classes. I'm sure they'll help. ;)
catlover79 06-06-2007, 11:52 PM I'm so sorry to hear that, Leonard!
When I was in high school in the mid-1990s, we had to take the Ohio Proficiency Test. It was divided into 4 parts: Reading, writing, social studies and math. I passed everything the first time out - except math.
I had to take the math exam 3 or 4 times!! I've always been horrible at math and probably always will be. I have a reading/English brain, not a math brain. Finally I did pass, and have been out of high school for 9 years. Even now I still have to carry a calculator with me at all times.
From all your posts, I can tell that you are very smart, Leonard, and I have no doubt you'll pass. Don't feel stupid...maybe math just isn't your strength. Just keep studying and don't give up! Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it (i.e. tutoring). Keep us updated!
Kay Scarpetta 06-06-2007, 11:59 PM We have those in MA; they're called MCAS. Pain in my ass, they were. So stupid. I'm smart but a sucky test taker. It shouldn't be measured on tests!
Cheer up; you'll pass! :)
Janice 06-07-2007, 12:35 AM I'm sorry to hear that. Study harder, and I'm sure you'll ace the test the next go around.

GoldenGirlsFan92 06-07-2007, 03:18 AM Sorry you didn't do good on the math exam. Math is a very hard subject. Keep studying. Good luck.

Don't worry - it's only 4 years out of you life. Seems like everything now, but within a couple of years you'll be moving on. You do need basic math in life for sure, but unless it's a certain profession, you won't use most of it. Just like the show "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" its amazing how much we forget anyway.
I sucked in school even though I studied like mad in grades 9 & 10, but by 11 I found a great way of studying for me and ended up pulling off honours the last two years. Was even up for a full scholarship to college. A lot had to do with my depression the first couple of years too I suppose.
You'll get through. Look at Karly (Kay Scarpetta) making it and even ripping off honours. At least you're doing your best and that's all anyone can ask.
Already Gone 06-07-2007, 11:27 AM Aww, I'm sorry to hear that. Math has always been my weakest subject. I really struggled with it in school and I agree that if you keep practicing it, especially the stuff that really gives you problems, you will be fine.

 I still don't know how that happened...
...but it's happening TONIGHT! T-minus 6 1/2 hours to go!

 Hey - who CARES how ya did it - ya DID IT!! Sometimes it's not wise to examine something too closely - just enjoy and run with it!!
(funny - I had the same thoughts as you when I ended up doing so well too - that's hilarious!!)
Guess you're pretty excited! Enjoy every single minute of it - you've earned it!
RoryGilmore 06-07-2007, 03:24 PM Sorry that you didnt pass, Math Sucks!!! I'm so glad IL doesnt have a test like that because I took pre-calc my jr. year and I'm not enrolled for a math class senior year I really didnt HAVE to take pre-calc but wanted to have math the year I took the ACT. But yeah study hard and look over all those little math terms they have so you know what they're asking for!
Nighthawk76 06-07-2007, 05:34 PM I'm sorry. Math was never my best subject either. There was a math course I took in college (it was a requirment) that I had to take three times before I passed it.
Courtnee 06-07-2007, 06:27 PM Sorry to hear that. Math blows.
SBTB Geek 06-08-2007, 01:08 AM I'm sorry. Math was never my best subject either. There was a math course I took in college (it was a requirment) that I had to take three times before I passed it.
Eh, don't remind me! The college math requirement OWNED my life for an entire year! I devoted all of my time to it-- endless studying, group tutoring etc. I had anxiety before every test--I worked out like crazy just to get my mind on something else.
About the CAHSEE...
It's a shame so many kids aren't doing well. This proves how bad some teachers and schools are. The math portion of the test consists of BASIC math, yet kids taking Algebra II can't even pass it!
I know a few kids who received "Certificates of Completion" instead Diplomas the day of graduation as a result of the test. But those are usually the ones who don't even try--if you take those prep classes you say you're taking, I'm 100% sure you'll pass. Trust me.
*CHAD* 06-08-2007, 11:25 AM I'm sorry that you didnt pass your Math test but hang in there next time i know you will good luck! :)
Ireneparalegal 06-08-2007, 04:43 PM Sorry to hear of this news. I live here in Calif so I do know what you are referencing to.
I am sure you will be able to pass it when you take the exam again. You have the smarts and the goal in mind, so don't let this frustrate you. Shake it off and since you have already taken the math section, you know what to expect. At least now you can try and study and practice and hopefully you will get it the next time around! GOOD LUCK!
freshprinceofLA 06-09-2007, 02:35 AM ARG! i JUST FOUND OUT I was 4 pts away fr passing!
