View Full Version : Authorities find 81-year old L.A. woman living with about 120 pet rats
TripperFan 06-06-2007, 02:19 PM LOS ANGELES (AP) - Officers seized more than 100 pet rats, dozens of rabbits and other animals from the home of an 81-year-old woman, who was later treated at a hospital for what appeared to be bites, authorities said.
"The woman had no food in the house for herself and seemed disoriented," said Annette Ramirez, an officer with the city's Animal Services Department. "Her arms were covered with open wounds apparently caused by animal bites."
Animal control officers discovered the scene while investigating a report Monday of unkempt conditions at a home in suburban Wilmington. In all, they found about 120 rats, 25 rabbits, six parakeets, a dog, a quail and a cockatiel, Ramirez said.
The woman, identified as Wanda Langstom, was overwhelmed by how quickly the rats reproduced, Ramirez said.
"She said it just started with two but it got out of hand."
Most of the animals were in fair condition, but two rabbits needed medical attention. They will all be available for adoption after being treated by a veterinarian, Ramirez said.
 You'd think after the first two reproduced, she'd get the idea to give away the babies and maybe SEPARATE the two rats?

In my town, there was an old lady living in a farmhouse with lots of sheep! The fact that this farmhouse was on a major main road was a big deal...developers were constantly on her to sell so they could build a subdivision on her property. She refused them all. Finally, she passed on (no, I don't know what happened to the sheep) and lo and behold, there are now condos on the property.

I find that story sicker and sadder than the one about the rats. How I hate where this society is headed...

Actually I don't mind the fellas. It comes from taking care of the classroom rats (Wilbur and Charlotte - I still remember them) in grade 2. They're no different than hamsters - just longer tails. Actually, squirrels are basically rats with fuzzy tails. (They're pissing me off this year in the bird feeder and garden big time).
Sheep IN the farmhouse with her? ewwwwwwww - the SMELL alone!!
Reminds me of a (TRUE) story of a guy back in the 80s who got caught "doing" sheep behind Canada Packers in Toronto. Not only were these poor things destined for the slaughter house (that's what Canada Packers is), but they were being SEXUALLY ABUSED by this moron!!!
Apparently the guy had a wife and five kids too.
I've also kidded that his name was "BAAAAAHsil" but it IS a true story.

Sounds like she was senile and didn't know what she was doing anymore.
It's called compassion, look it up...

What year was that? I remember reading about that in "The News-Herald," but I don't remember when it was. I do know that it was in Willoughby.

From the links it looks like it was 2003 or so. She died early 2004.

Here it says December 2003, but I read elsewhere January 6, 2004. I live only about 1 1/2 miles from the property, and remember all the battles over the property.
freshprinceofLA 06-06-2007, 10:19 PM eww that's so nasty! I guess she just felt lonely so she just did not say anything but I HATE RATS!!!! and I would not want to touch a quail!
Ohio8 06-07-2007, 08:25 PM Here's the approximate location of the condos and where the fram used to be. I used to live in Mentor, and Laketran's Rt. 2 bus passes by the Euclid/91 area.

That's the spot all right. I actually live on one of the streets behind the hospital.

I couldn't imagine having one rat for a pet, let alone 120.

Ohhhhhh, You obviously don't watch Animal Planet Channel. Those programs that follow animal protection officers have shown many episodes where some crazy old fart (man) had a house full of cats. I have seen at least three episodes where that was the case. This one man had over 140 cats! He lived in the garage because the cats took over the house.

Now that you mention it, yah, I guess I have seen men on Animal Cops. Usually tho it is women. Course I guess they tend to prefer cats over men anyway. This one's a new twist with rodents.
I keep hearing Michael Jackson's "Ben" when I read it. ;)

If they fatten them up, they're easier to catch and at least some are declawed! ;)
