Former Frasier star David Hyde Pierce has revealed he is gay, after keeping his sexuality secret for decades.

The actor, who played Dr. Niles Crane in the long-running sitcom, has always refused to talk about his personal life, despite rumors about his sexual orientation.

But the 48-year-old has allowed his long-term partner Brian Hargrove's name to be mentioned in an interview on CNN.com.

In a paragraph carefully buried in the article, the journalist writes, "Pierce got to Los Angeles in the early 1990s when his partner, actor-writer-producer Brian Hargrove, wanted to write for television."

Pierce's spokesperson has since confirmed Hargrove is the star's partner.

Well, it was not secret for me. I figured that out years ago. Seriously, DHP is a very talented entertainer (I have his autograph!) and was just perfect in the role of Niles.

i just read this article on a UK entertainment website, and all i could say is that i am in shock:eek: i'd never believed that he was gay, seeing as i read on various websites, excluding wikipedia that he was married and therefore straight. he doesn't look gay but then again, you cannot judge someone by their appearence and say to them, 'he's gay, she's a lesbian, they're straight etc'. i am really happy for david though and besides the majority of my favourite male actors and musicians are gay anyway. and that is good!

yeah, you're right. i don't understand why he had to tell us now when he should've done so a long time ago when he was on the show. it's as if it's almost to say it's something one should be ashamed or embarassed about. i mean i could understand that there could've been the odd backlash here and then but there are so many actors and performers who have come out of the closet. people would say it's none of our business, but you'd be curious to know if your favourite celebrity was a closet homosexual, not that it makes a slight amount of difference, anyway. and coffield, whilst you wait for charlie sheen, i'm waiting for michael urie who plays marc in ugly betty to declare himself gay and proud. though some sources say he is straight and has a girlfriend

now if we're talking about michael here, instead of david, well the thing is, he hasn't confirmed to us whether or not he is gay and it was allegedly reported earlier this year that he had sued a newspaper journalist after the journo disclosed his sexuality and yet michael refuted such claims as he was and probably still is in a hetrosexual relationship with a woman. and i know that he portrays a gay bloke in ugly betty, but i would be just as happy if he was and is straight in real life, heh heh! :D

he has a very conservative, masculine look about him, he sure as hell doesn't look like your stereotypical gay guy. david's very gangly and skinny looking, appearance-wise

I sort of put the pieces together years ago when he said that he didn't want to reveal his sexuality. It makes no difference to me though, because he's an awesome actor. I can see why he hid it, because in the early 90's their was still some backlash against gays, now, everyone's more acceptable of it.

most definitely. i agree with you that he is a great actor, as he just has this ability of making people laugh. and as for the 90s, well yeah, it was still a taboo thing for an actor to come out of the closet- although ellen degeneres did come out as a lesbian, during the mid 90s i think on her sitcom ellen- both as a character and in real life. and it's not just actors, but musicians and singers in pop bands have come out as gay and lesbian as well. i am not the slightest bit interested in who they sleep with- gay or straight all that matters to me is that he or she are good at what they do and are very talented on screen, acting-wise

I applaud David Hyde Pierce for keeping his personal life private for so many years. It's refreshing to see a celebrity who doesn't want any media attention when he or she isn't in front of a camera.

Nowadays so many of these so called "actors" are nothing but attention whores who expect thier publicist to issue a press release whenever they leave the house.

He came out. Big deal. There was no big announcement, no cover of People, no book to coincide with the big announcement.

Very well played.

That's the point! There are so many "celebrities" who live thier life in the spotlight, but there are a few who do their job, do it very well, and don't hog the spotlight. I would rather support a hard working actor like David Hyde Peirce or say Paul Giamatti who simply likes to act and be humbly left alone then the other sub talented "actors" who are craving attention.

i am not a huge fan of z- list celebrities but neither am i a huge fan of the a-list ones either. with celebrities like david hyde pierce, paul giamatti, william h macy, greg kinnear, lea thompson, even vanessa williams to name and the equally talented, up and coming ones america ferrara and michael urie- both from ugly betty, they are so not well known within hollywood. but i prefer the efforts they put in, not just because they are good at their role but simply because they do it for the love of their profession. and that is one of the most important lessions to learn. paris hilton, britney, lindsay lohan, justin timberlake etc on the other hand are just a bunch of fame hungry, overhyped puppets. and i know they are in the same age category as me: 21-30, but i for one don't look up to them, one bit

I'm only surprised that this is news at all (and I don't mean that in a bad way). What I mean is that I'd always heard and seen little things that virtually confirmed it, and it was a rumor for quite awhile. He was even quoted as saying once (and forgive me for not remembering the source), "My life's an open book but I'm not going to read it to you." You could have pretty much read between the lines to know what he was referring to, especially when the question was asked of his sexuality when he gave that answer.

At any rate, David is one of my favorite actors and he really seems like a great guy too. I sent him a letter with an SASE sometime back in 2000 and a couple of months later I got a personalized, autographed photo in the mail. It's great when people like him who are very famous take time out of their busy lives just to make a fan like myself happy. I can guarantee you they don't all do that. Thanks, David. :D

I agree...I figured he was gay when I heard on an interview long ago a reference to his partner. He really is talented and a joy to watch, I watch the show every night and really enjoy the show. I never got to watch Frasier during it's original run, due to other shows I watched back then I found it in reruns.

I agree, I think DHP is a very private person. He probably didn't really think his sexuality was anyone's business in the first place.

The Bee Gees (or just Barry and Robin now, as Maurice sadly died in 2003) are like that - talented men who don't try to put themselves in the spotlight. They also happen to be very nice people, which is another reason I admire them so much.

Yup - never a secret with me.
It's funny sometimes. Everybody "knows" that someone will be gay, but it's like they can't see how obvious it might be and think they're "hiding" it.
Like Ellen, I always knew she was gay. And if you watch the reruns of the Ellen sitcom, almost from the beginning she hinted to it in every script.

Anyway, he's very talented (was my favourite character on Frasier) and I'm glad he's been able to free himself up and just come out with it. I'm sure he's going to be a lot happier in life for it and it certainly won't affect his career one bit. :)

The Fraiser series had a couple of Gay Actors. The Actor who played Bob Bulldog Briscoe (Dan Butler) is also Gay. I always thought David Hyde Pierce was Gay, but his sexuality does not take anything away from his acting ability. There have been several Gay Actors in Hollywood throughout the years.

Rock Hudson, Raymond Burr, Nancy Kulp, Robert Reed, Rosie O'donnell, Ellen Degeneres, Amanda Bearse, JM J. Bullock, Neil Patrick Harris, Danny Pintauro and too many more to mention.

I do not know what happened, but I posted here about a half an hour ago, but my message never got picked up! Maybe, I forgot to push the "Submit" button or something. In any event, the fact that this message did not go up is, in a way, a blessing in disguise! When I posted it the first time, I spelled Frasier's name wrong! In a post that I have done since then, I apologized for that error. However, now that I see that it never made it to the board, I plan on going back to the other post and tell the reader to disgard my apology! In any event, anyone who is interested in what I think about David Hyde Pierce being gay can go to a site called "Jump the Shark." I posted on that site earlier this evening. Take care everyone!

What got me upset was when he won his Tony award this year and he was crying because he was so happy and he thanked his partner, who was sitting right there in the theater. All the media and even my family members were talking about how he admitted he had a partner rather than talking about how he won his first Tony award after decades of being in Broardway plays and musicals.
