It seems like an easy question, but honestly think. Everything has been done.

The last few movies I've seen have been remakes, sequels, the same plot with different characters, or a book made into a movie.

Its kinda sad...

For originality I'd say the first Spiderman film, it had never been done before. I don't count the tv series, since this film blew the tv series away you can really see how far they've come effects wise.

Back To The Future was original
Raiders Of The Lost Ark was original

You do have to go way back to find something never done before, LOL.

V for Vendetta struck me as very original. It marketed itself as an action film, and yet it had romance, drama, adventure, and a lot of thinly veiled politics.

My friends and I were talking about the last original comedy we'd seen. The list was remarkably short: The 40 Year Old Virgin and Love Actually.

V for Vendetta & Spiderman were comic books made into movies.

I would say the last few original ideas were Kill Bill, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich, Pan's Labyrinth, The Fountain. Those films all felt very fresh to me.

I guess I didn't read the original post all the way through. But I can consider a movie based on a book as still original, if it has something new to say. Vendetta was based on a comic book, but it was still a very unusual/original film - reguardless of its source material. Spiderman wasn't very new, it had the same plot/reliance on special effects that Superman and Batman had - just fancier and fresher.

I definately agree with Eternal Sunshine and Being John Malkovich - those had never been done before. I guess I'd have to add Memento to that collection.

"The Pristige" and "The Illusionist" were both very original. They just had the bad luck to come out at the same time.

"Corpse Bride" was definately never done before.
