Does anybody out there know sign-language? I was wondering how accurate and realistic the sign-language used in "Silent Promises" is. It seems Laura learned it really fast and so did Daniel's father. Where did he learn? Towards the end of the episode it seemed Laura conveyed some pretty advanced and complicated emotions and concepts. I would think that would take years to learn.

Any input on this?

Yeah, I don't know sign language but I would think it would have taken a bit longer to learn than what was portrayed on that ep.

Btw(and way off topic), I've always thought that Daniel would make a good Romulan or Vulcan on Star Trek. He has that look.
Just an observation.:)

My ex-husband took a course in sign language for a year. He was no near where Laura was in such a short time. I even tried the lessons my husband brought home and studied the book. There is no way in hell one could be that good at sign language that damn fast.

I don't even think American Sign Language was around back then - at least, as we know it today. That's actually one of my least favorite episodes. I watched it once - which was more than enough!

Add me to that list...I too abhor this episode.

American Sign Language has been around since the 1800's...as for the exact year, I couldn't tell you. I know it was started in Europe and eventually brought here.

It's one of my least favorites because it's subpar. My least favorite episode of the entire series is the two-part "Sylvia". I hate that one because it's creepy, nasty and violent. It makes my skin crawl just thinking about it.
