But that was really a stretch! There's another episode where Beaver comes home from attending a ball game (actually two; The Poor Loser, Tell it to Ella.) wearing a suit! Maybe, I could understand back in those days doing that if you went out to a special event, But not to go to the Mondello's for dinner! :lol:

June was a little too "over concerned" with her prime and proper politeness at times. She tells Beaver before he goes to Larry's:

"Now be sure to thank the Mondello's for having you, don't eat with your elbows on the table, don't talk with your mouth full, and if they give you something you don't like, you eat it anyway."

Damn! It's like June could do an oral dissertation for Beaver when he crosses the street!

And BTW, there is NOTHING wrong with politely telling your host as a guest that you can't eat something. People can have negative reactions to food, and the host would want the guest to be comfortable and to have a good time in their home.

As a sidenote, I LOVE the "Friendship" episode and watching Beaver and Larry fight!

I know what you mean! Those poor kids on the show had to wear suits for everything. All the parties Wally went to the guys wore either suits or sportjackets and ties. I think they even had to wear suits when the family brought Captain Jack to the alligator farm.

Men used to wear suits and hats to baseball games, and women wore dresses. Look at all the old-time photos of famous players and you see a sea of hats in the stands! Thank goodness we got away from that!

Making Beaver wear a suit to Larry's for dinner was a bit over the top. June should have allowed him to at least wear a nice sweater, shirt with a collar and slacks.

Just imagine the expense of keeping growing boys in suits!

I remember when everyone dressed up for church on a regular Sunday - suits for men and boys, and full dresses for girls. You even had to wear something on your head (scarf or hat) if you were a girl - and quite often gloves.

It's the kids of the 50s/60s/70s that are now adults and don't force our kids to do the same - nothing like a humid, un-airconditioned church in the middle of summer wearing "good" clothes! ugh

I don't think she was over the top, kids were taught to have good manners and they did. My mom always reminded me to be polite and to say thank you, no thank you, and yes please. It could have been the norm back then. A kid's manners reflected on the parents, so that also could have been a factor.

There was no need to wear suits for baseball games. I saw that episode. Ward even had to wear a suit. beaver brought a ball back that he caught...in a clean unwrinkled suit. LOL

It was a sign of the times. No one complained if you were over dressed. I work in hotel and the "rigs" people wear. No one really looks well dressed. 50 % look like they are at the beach. The older people of today looked the best. Very few sloppy oldsters. But back to Beaver a sweater and nice pants would have been best, but maybe June felt you can't be overdressed.

i agree with you on that. i liked the fact that when they went to a dance the boys wore suits and the girls wore dresses. When my son wears those baggy jeans without a belt and pants hanging down I tell him he does not want to go around looking like a slob(wally to the Beav)and he will go and fix himself up.

If June can cook dinner wearing a dress, heels and pearls, then I guess the Beav can wear a suit to his friend's house for dinner, lol. It was a sign of the times, but also a sign of their middle class. My husband grew up post WWII, and he and his four siblings were not wearing suits on a regular basis, that's for sure. Same for my family. My parents married in 1952, and like most couples, they struggled early on in their marriage. I look at pictures when we were kids, and we weren't dressed in suits or fancy dresses. Only on Easter Sunday, Christmas, special occastions, etc.

That's how it was back then. Wally would wear a suit and tie to take a girl to the movies. Now people just wear jeans and a T shirt or shorts. And how come you never saw the boys wear any shorts? Wasn't it hot enough or didn't they wear them back them or even tennis shoes. They always wore hard shores even with their jeans.

Does anybody dress up anymore?

As iI remember we all dressed neatly. Shirts tucked in, clothes ironed, hair combed. My brother didn't wear a suit when he had to go out to dinner, but we all looked pretty darn good. Even when we went to a Dodger game, we had to look presentable. I have to admit I miss those days. I can't believe the way some people go out in public. Plus if we were not allergic to a certain food, we had to eat whatever was served to us.

O I'm going to be in the minority here....I for one thought that a man was exceptionally handsome when he wore a suit and I still like it. Kids looked better too and it certainly is more appealing than what they wear now with pants around their butt cracks - right?

As for suits at a ball game? They did wear them to ball games too. I have a special Lucy video that has a clip of the 1956 World Series showing Don Larsen throwing a perfect game to win and they showed the stands and the men were all dressed in ties and women were in dresses and the hats. That clip was awesome because it was real coverage and of course I happen to be a huge baseball and Yankees fan so it was real special to witness that historical clip.

It was a different time. I've seen family photos from back then and men are always wearing suits no matter where it was taken.
