In a recent interview with SCI FI Wire, Heroes creator and executive producer Tim Kring preps fans on what to expect in and following Monday's first-season finale, “How to Stop an Exploding Man.” According to him, one priority for the second season is to ensure that uninitiated viewers can find their way to the series and begin enjoying it immediately without having to review the entire first season.
That's a tall order for a serial program reliant on interconnected episodes, but Kring and company seem prepared to achieve this goal by refocusing the plotlines on the generational aspect of the “empowered” community, whereas the first season was more concerned with how its existence emerged and initially took shape in present times. Kring clarifies that “[t]he idea of multiple generations has started to crop up on the show. And in the second season we will deal with that more … to make it easy for viewers to be able to come on in the second season.”
Another aspect of Monday's finale is the highly anticipated introduction of yet more characters with special powers. It's always fun learning and, even better, seeing just what exactly they can do, and the last episode of the first season will prove no less exciting in that respect. Kring confirms that there are “several new characters coming” who will play a critical role in the forthcoming second season. Moreover, as usual, “older characters will cycle out of the show” to make room. This will be accompanied by the inevitable cliffhanger that Kring promises will “be intriguing more than frustrating [as the] idea was to end one idea of the show, one story, and then slingshot you into the next season.”
Uh-oh! That looks like the deaths or “disappearances” of additional characters with special abilities are right around the corner. Although the spoiler previews don't ruin any such events, they do give a glimpse of what to expect when “How to Stop an Exploding Man” premieres on Monday, May 21, at 9pm EST on NBC.
