It would be helpful to know if you are researching a certain time period. Sitcoms tend to reflect the era in which they air. Shows in the '70s were very concerned about the times: Maude, All in the Family, Good Times, One Day at a Time, Chico and the Man, Sanford and Son, etc.

The '50s were more idealistic: Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best, I Love Lucy, etc.

The '60s touched on fantasy: I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, The Munsters, Gilligan's Island, Beverly Hillbillies, etc.

The '80s swung back from the "message laden" 70's with The Facts of Life, Golden Girls, Who's the Boss, Cosby Show, etc., but the families weren't real.

The most realistic show about family life probably is Roseanne.

Actually, not only do sitcoms reflect society but also films and books. However, these media don't really "reflect" but rather "refract" society. I prefer to use refract because the word reflect means exactly showing what is happening. But it's not like that. These media show stories from the society but the director/writer somehow changes the stories and puts his personal views on them.
