Discover Channel host Jimmy Hall was killed in a parachute accident Wednesday while filming a documentary north of the Arctic Circle. He was 41.

The accident occurred near Sam Fjord on Baffin Island in Canada as Hall and two crew members were filming a documentary on the region that included BASE jumping — parachuting from a fixed object — in the treacherous mountains. The area Hall was jumping from is accessible only by plane, snowmobile or dogsled.

“They all jumped at the same time and it’s assumed that Jimmy got blown into the side of the mountain,” said a family spokesman.

Hall had just been chosen in April as the host for “Shark Week” on Discovery Channel and had completed part of the series in the Bahamas. He was scheduled to head to the Great Barrier Reef off Australia in June to swim with Great White sharks. The series was to air late this summer.

Hall spent most of his life on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, but traveled the world seeking adventure and once paraglided off an active volcano in Peru.

In a CNN interview he once summed up his adventurous lifestyle: “I’d rather blow up than rust.”

Sure. The creatures of the deep are some of the most enigmatic you'll ever find. We may never know all there is to know about sharks!

With that said, Discovery Channel is a corporate network and as such, it does do strange and inexplicable things from time to time.
