After months of intense negotiations, NBC and Dick Wolf closed a deal over the weekend to bring veteran crime drama "Law & Order" back to the network for an 18th season.

I don't know...I still watch it but I miss episodes a lot more than I used to. It just seems to be a tired show. It really has never recovered from Jerry Orbach's death.

Seems like they are just sticking around to beat Gunsmoke's record of 20 years.

And I hope getting rid of more well known people like Jesse Martin and relegating Sam Waterston to less screen time in the name of saving money doesn't ruin the show.... I would prefer a show go out at the top of its game like M*A*S*H than try to beat some record and leave cause it was lousy.

:yeahthat Jerry Orbach was truly the heart and soul of L&O, and the show has never recovered from his departure/passing. :(
Who could forget his many one-liners over the years? Like the time he said while arresting a suspect, "Ever hear of the 7 rings of Saturn? These are the 2 rings of Rikers."

While having the program go beyond next season would break the Gunsmoke record for longevity, it's far from breaking the western's record for number of episodes produced. L & O is at 410 or so as of now, while Gunsmoke went 635 shows, as many of those twenty years Gunsmoke had 39-episode seasons. During its 13 1/2 year run, Bonanza produced 430 shows. That one L&O can quite likely top.

Law and Order is still one of NBC's highest rated shows. It always does well for them, which isn't saying much, considering the sad state NBC is in right now. But, I haven't watched this show in a long time.
