View Full Version : What's the best way to watch Unsolved Mysteries?

About 2-3 months ago I began posting here, having registered for the sole intent of asking folks where I could buy some DVDs. Since then I have been pleasantly surprised by the vast majority of the posters here. Its apparent to me that this is a collection of a lot of intelligent people holding interesting and passionate ideas on the segments profiled on this unique and well remembered television program. You all apparently take your television viewing seriously, but how seriously do you take it?

What is your ideal way to watch the show?

For my answer to that one, I'll take you back to late Feb/early March when I began posting here. As I mentioned above, I signed up and immediately asked around about obtaining some DVDs. The fantabulous crystaldawn hoooked me up with volumes 1 & 2 and I eagerly awaited them in the mail. Now, I had bought the officially released boxed sets but the left me lacking. I only enjoyed the "Bizarre Murders" & "Best Of..." sets, and neither of those contained any of the segments I remember from my heydey with the show (88-92). However my 8 year old and my 5 year old both enjoyed the ghost segments they saw, and it was my FULL intent to bring them into the UM fold so to speak. So after I made my order with crystaldawn I giddily announce to my girls, as well as my niece (8) and nephew (13), that we're going to be getting a ca-ca-load of brand spanking new UMs coming! They came on a Friday, if I remember correctly, and on my way home from work I stopped by the store and picked up: MUG Root Beer, 7-Up, Vanilla ice cream, & popcorn. I waited until the sun went down and then I rounded up the kids. They went to work in the living room setting up their sleeping bags and pillows while I floated the floats, Root Beer for some 7-Up for others, and popped corn for all. I am officially declaring the best way to watch Unsolved Mysteries is: You and a loved one (or loved ones), curled up with blankets and pillows, sometime after 8PM with floats and popcorn at the ready. In case of emergency, or personal preference, floats may be substituted with warm apple pie and vanilla ice cream, popcorn may be replaced with Fiddle-Faddle. You are never to watch Unsolved Mysteries after dark alone!! This will only lead to no sleep and a long fearful night in which you will jump nervously at every little noise.

For those of you who take it more seriously than I do:
Would you label Unsolved Mysteries as an hour out of your day for entertainment?
Do any of you have little rituals you like to go through in order to make your enjoyment of Unsolved Mysteries that much better?
Is it an hour out of your day to get caught up in, or brought up to speed on, a puzzle you may be able to help solve?
For those of you who not only view but take an active participation in the show, do you Google the names of the victims and suspects profiled?

Though I wouldn't label myself a "dedicated fan" in relation to the people here who seem to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the show, I do myself very much enjoy sitting down and watching the episodes. Even last night, I watched probably 10 segments. If only LRW showed in my area (even now, though, it's gone in June so what the heck). I always enjoy the full shows above the segments.

I like the idea of floats and popcorn, though I've never tried it. If I ever have anything, it's some chips and a cold beverage, mostly water.

Night viewings are the best, and if you're alone that entire sense of paranoia like you talk about sets in. Last night the sun set and it got dark quickly. It went from bright at the start of the segment to gone at the end (granted, it was a long one like Son of Sam). I stared at my switch for a while, which is a walk across the room.

:cuss:

I love this show.

Interesting question.

Since I'm the only one in the house who likes the show, I watch it alone, and it usually is at night. None of the stories really scare me. I have seen some of them so many times that they no longer have the intended effect.

I used to, on occasion, watch it with my girlfriend. However, she would always make fun of the bad acting, the hairdos, the old clothes, big phones, redneck reunions etc. and just generally make smartass comments that detracted from my viewing.

I do have a friend who likes the show, though he's not a serious fan by any stretch. We have watched episodes together and it often leads to some interesting discussions, particularly if we were watching an "unexplained death" or "final appeal". For instance, we watched the Glen Consagra story awhile back, mostly because he hadn't seen it before and I was always telling him I wanted his opinion on it.

When it was on Lifetime in 2006, and before that I would watch UM and eat some lunch. Also sometimes on half/days of school would come home and watch it at 11AM & 12PM(Back in early 2000's). That is how I would watch UM. Damn, I wish Lifetime would put UM back on.

I watched Unsolved alone at night, then go to my job where I work the "graveyard shift" alone. WHOOPS!

I don't really have any regular viewing pattern.

Most of my favorite shows are horror/suspense shows: Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, Alfred Hitchcock Presents. So I guess I'm kind of immune to it by now.

I work in retail, so my schedule is always pretty screwy. All I have to say is thank God for DVR.

I try to watch it every night on LRW, work schedule permitting. My husband usually uses that hour to go and shower. I don't think he likes Unsolved Mysteries very much. He's from England, and although I know there are quite a few British viewers who post here, he had never seen or heard of the show before he moved to the U.S. If he does watch it with me, he's making fun of it. I don't mind watching it alone, but it does make me extremely paranoid. By the end of the show, I'm checking to make sure that the doors are locked (for the third time) and looking out the window into the backyard to see if anyone's out there!

When I was a kid, my dad and I always watched Unsolved Mysteries together. He liked the ones about ghosts and UFOs. It's a good memory I have of the time we spent together when I was younger.

I started having trouble sleeping when I was about eight years old, so I would go out into the living room around 1 or 2 a.m. and watch tv until it was time to go to school. I remember Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight Zone being the only shows on at that hour, so it's no wonder that I'm such a fruitcake now! :p

Well I do like to watch UM when I'm the only one in the house so there are no distractions. I used to watch it some right before I went to bed at night and I usually ended up dreaming about those segments that night.

Love your root beer float story Corky. :)

I, too, enjoy watching UM at night. Being a student, I keep pretty odd hours and find that I am the most productive at night. I'd often throw UM in as background noise...

That being said, my boyfriend (now my ex) knew my habits of watching UM late at night. One night, after he had been out with his friends, he came over to my apartment and started tapping on my windows and scratching at my door. It was probably about 2:30 in the morning. I was so freaked out that there was no way I was going to answer the door. He had a key to my apartment, so when he let himself in, I was standing around the corner with a bat in my hand. He scared the hell out of me!

I laugh about it now, though. :) I still maintain I should have clubbed him. :D

Just bumped this to say two words: DVD Projection.

I just bought a DVD projector. Can't wait to see how UM looks projected on the wall in the dark.

Sure. Some UM themed refreshments would be in order.

The only thing that comes to mind immediately is chocolate milkshakes - hold the insecticide.

Okay, I'll bring some of those extremely unappetizing looking sandwiches made by Dennis DePue's lover as he was making his final escape. Plain white bread, one flat slice of processed meat slapped on without regard for where it landed, and was there mayonnaise involved?

I specifically recall that Dennis requested soda for his trip. I got all that covered.

What other UM foods need to be included?

Special donuts, of course!

Bologna and cheese in honor of Permon Gilbert.

Beer (but not too much, lest there be general rollin' around on the floor, wrasslin' and a bunch of dumb stuff) for Kenneth Engie and Curtis Heck

When I was a kid and the show was still on lifetime I would watch with friends. Now I usually resort to DVDs (thank you crystaldawn!) and often watch with my mother. Now that I'm home for the summer from college, she always wants to watch with me. But when I'm alone, I still watch and get creeped out, especially if I'm home alone. But I still love it! The show is especially effective at night, of course. It usually doesn't keep me up at night unless the shrieking update music comes to mind XD

As for refreshments, I recommend red wine (but beware: watch your glass in case the rolex robbers ever have a revival movement!)

Growing up when UM was on Fridays I would either eat chips, popcorn or Little Debbie cakes while watching the show.

Late at night with the doors locked. I also like to watch it in the afternoon sometimes. I miss how Lifetime would show it around lunchtime with good old Robert Stack hosting and the old-documentary-style presentation. They will never top that.

Perfect thread to come up now - I have loads of episodes, but they're scatted over vhs tapes that I'm putting together on DVDs at the moment. Some segments I forgot I even had (when I labelled the tapes, half the time I scribbled the titles out or forgot some) which is even cooler to see.

Just like some other people have said, I'm not as scared by the fugitive or ghost ones anymore just because I've seen most of them numerous times or have watched the show for years (since '93/94). The sadder segments or moments still have an emotional impact on me, but I'm okay with watching it at night now, lol.

Ditto, ditto, ditto!

I have really fond memories of the last couple of years Lifetime broadcast the show. I was working as a dog walker, and you'd be surprised how many folks leave their TVs on for their dogs during the day.

I was also able to catch the show when I'd stop home for lunch. I remember seeing the Dottie Caylor segment sometime in 2005, which was a treat, sandwiched there in between back to back airings of the church explosion segment...

Dead middle of the night, lights off, doors locked, curtains pulled, shades drawn. Pizza Rolls, Coke and semi-hoping there will be a strange noise in the yard to up the fear factor...

A few weeks ago I was watching the Halloween special from 1988 and the Queen Mary episode scares me beyond belief. I usually don't watch THAT one at night but decided to anyways. Needless to say, I didn't sleep lol

I usually watch UM wearing lingerie, candles all around, and chanting satanic verses. Sour cream and onion potato chips is also a nice touch.

Kidding.

I find watching UM when it's still light out is best because for some reason the older I get the more scared I get.

A light menu consisting of chips, Fig Newtons, pudding and/or popcorn.
Beverages: (black) coffee, iced tea, soda, or maybe an alcoholic beverage such as the "Stack-hattan"

Woah, totally feel you on the black coffee. I love coffee and have to get my two cups a day at 8am and 8pm respectively. Lately, I've been watching UM at 8pm while drinking my coffee - always black, I never liked cream or sugar added.

Never gave it that much thought until you mentioned it.

Co-sign on black coffee. Not even creamer or a pack of Equal. It takes the acidic taste out of it, which I enjoy in coffee.

Seen at least 50-75% of all the episodes so they don't have the same effect. But I prefer to watch it at late at night, by myself so I can digest every detail to every episode.
