May 7, 2007 -- YANKING "Gilmore Girls" was the best thing that could have happened to the beloved series, its star says.

The cancellation by the CW network was "a conversation that was going on for a long time. It's not a surprise," Lauren Graham said on a segment of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" that airs tomorrow [Tues].

"I think it's a really a good thing . . . It's the best thing for the show, and I feel really good about it."

A contract dispute last year forced the departure of its original creators, husband and wife team Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino. After they left, some fans have complained that the quality of the show dropped.

Many have said that it should have ended when the Palladinos left.

The final episode of the 7-year-old series, which originally launched on The WB, will air May 15.

"Girls" drew decent ratings for the fledgling CW network, but contract negotiations with its stars, Graham and Alexis Bledel fell through.

We'll see how much Lauren likes the idea of Gilmore Girls getting cancelled when her next series gets canned after three episodes.

I just hope that Lauren's next project is successful, she's incredibly talented and she doesn't get enough recognition for that.
