View Full Version : Is Music out??

It seems a lot of people don’t listen to music…mostly older people. They’re busier, and less enthusiastic. And I no longer hear music coming from cars, or anywhere.

Or are people just using headphones?

I think music went out in the early 90’s. The quality went downhill, and just targeted kids: that’s easy. It seems kids buy CD's more for “coolnes” and “looks”.
I even stopped listening for 1.5 years. But I re-discovered music – older music – and got into CD quality. Now, at 38, I’ve never been more enthusiastic about MUSIC!!! I’m trying to spread that to people who don’t seem to care about fun. They just want to eat and watch news and work. They’ve never heard most of their favorites on CD! And they don’t care.

Maybe they’re just mental.

Why do I care? My favorite band, RUSH, just released their 18th CD, and I’m sitting here with my 17 Rush CDs/Albums, celebrating. And I feel sorry for people missing out. One might say, “They have there definition of fun”. Nope. They’ve got no idea of the joy of strong melodies, rhythms, cool changes, off-timings and syncopation, and skillful building to that last chorus.

Some may’ve just forgoten the joy.

So, spread the joyous sound so people can hear it. Not the sad crap the media irritates us with. That’s what may’ve caused people to stop. I know there’s a lot of good music out there that the media ignores. From Enya to Yes. From Pat Metheny to the B-52’s.
And where’s Norah Jones? She’s not “hot” enough for the media. But she’s worth hearing!

And save your hearing. Be mindful of what’s too loud. Instead of inspiring others, they’ll just tell you to “TURN IT DOWN”.

I don't think music is on its way out at all...sure, the quality of it might have decreased, but there's still some good stuff out there. Personally, I like music from any decade but this one (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s...even a bit from the 50s), but there's still music out today that is enjoyable :)

I don't think music is something that can die out, to be honest.

Not me...I'm always listening to music in my car (I listened to Cyndi Lauper on the way to work today!) and I have my headphones in my desk. I listen to music on my breaks (today it was Mariah Carey). Music from the 1960s-1980s is my favorite.

i think once you get past all the hip hop crap (no offense to people who like hip hop), you can find a lot of good songs. obviously older people wont like them but lets be honest, did the adults in the 60s, 70s, and 80s like the current music? in 20 years, the current generation will be saying how the 00's were awesome for music and the current era sucks.

and as for music being out - every single person i know listens to music, so it's not out. if music was out, iPods wouldn't be as popular as they are.

I know alot of people who still listen to music. Many people switched over to country music in the late 90's because there wasn't any good rock music coming out. I personally listen to classic rock, mainly from the late 60's to the mid 80's music.

I meant it seemed to go out in the 90's. I know there's always good stuff, but its mostly ignored by the mainstream. Craig Chaquico I liked in the 90's, but have you heard of him? I only heard him on Smooth jazz radio.

in 20 years, the current generation will be saying how the 00's were awesome for music I really don't think so. At least not the hits. Hits come and go 'cause there catchy for a week, but lack substance. Alot of great songs from past decades were never hits.

Remember "Two of Hearts"? Didn't think so. It made Stacie Q a star. A year later she was gone. BTW, the song was cheap crap. I didn't like much music in the 80's at a teen, but I'm liking it more all the time.

How 'bout current big hits...Does anyone now think "Hit me baby..." is a good song?????A big deal was made of it. Does it get radio play? I'm now trying to think of how it goes.

(Edit: LOL. Joe, I just noticed your sig, 20 min. after writing this post. I was thinking of that Mad TV sketch...my favorite!)

LMAO. it's one of my favorites too. :mrtarver:

anyway, even though there's a lot of crap in today's music, there are some songs i like...like i said, you just have to get past the Britney Spears/rap crap. it's probably not as many as there was in the "golden age" of music but there's definitley some good stuff IMO.

I always bring my ipod to school to listen to it before and after school. Music to me is not out I guess people have just started using ipods. I still hear music from cars everynow & then I live in LA so of course there will be some people playing loud music at least once a day.

Music is awesome. Trouble is, the 99% of the music now is just downright ear-bleedingly hideous. And I don't know of many people who blast 80s in their cars. lol

If that 1% of good, recent songs were more widespread...

I agree. I stopped listening to top-40 radio stations in 1981. I just didn't enjoy '82 and newer music as much as I did '70s and earlier.
In the car, I listen to about 60% talk radio/20% news/20% oldies music.

And I find it hard to believe that any of the music recorded in the last 10 years or so will ever be remembed as real classics like "Moon River" (1961) or "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" (1962) or "Rock Around The Clock" (1954).

No, music is still with us. I hear it all the time, everywhere.

It's all about choice. If some people don't care about something, that's their right. They may find their fun in other things or activities.
Maybe they’re just mental.
I love music, but I don't feel the need to insult people who don't love it. To each, his own.

My guess is that they just don't care about Rush or other music, and that they have their own definition of fun. I'm sure nobody wants or needs anyone's pity over this.
Some may’ve just forgoten the joy.
Many are getting their joy elsewhere. I'm a big movie buff. I realize that many people don't care about watching movies. I don't even think that they don't know what they're missing. I know they've watched movies before, it's just not their cup of tea. Some people love bowling, while others go bungy jumping. Takes all kinds to make this world go 'round. I embrace the differences. It would be a boring world if everyone was into the same thing.

I love music. I listen to it every day. I can't imagine my life without it. Music has gotten me through some really bad times. It has been providing much support for me through all the heartache and pain I've been suffering over the last week in the wake of my dog's passing.

I always have music playing. I love country music. I discovered it about two years ago when I realized there was nothing "mainstream" that I liked to listen to anymore.

Not to me. I listen to my Ipod (which has 1,500 songs) every day. At school we listen & talk about it all the time. So no I don't think Music is out.

My guess is that they just don't care about Rush or other music, and that they have their own definition of fun.The reason I think this isn't the case is, They used to listen to music and have music collections. One is a Rush fan. Now, with CD's available and more money for better equipment, I tell them It's a great time to be into music.

Books and news can't replace the joy of music.

I love country music too. My mom is a huge country music fan so I grew up hearing it all the time. Though I didn't really get into it myself until about two years ago. I really love Sara Evans and Martina McBride. I also like Shania Twain, Julie Roberts and Carrie Underwood. I still don't much care for male country music performers however.

Okay, now I'm confused, lol. You're referring to certain people in particular? I understood your post to mean people in general.

As for books and news not replacing the joy of music, that's a matter of opinion. I happen to share your opinion, yet realize that it's opinion nonetheless. Many people enjoy books as much as true music lovers love their music.

Try Gary Morris. He is a singer and did mostly country back in the 1980s. His greatest hits compilations are still in print (last I checked), and he did several duets with the likes of Crystal Gayle and Lynn Anderson. Gary Morris also did opera (La Boheme with Linda Ronstadt). Such a powerful, yet beautifully tender voice. Listen to his stuff, I think you'd enjoy it!

Sadly, he never seemed to get much recognition. Last I heard, he runs a ski resort out in Utah somewhere and performs only rarely.

I personally think top 40 is dead, it's been dead since Kasey Kasem left Kasey's TOP 40.
I like all kinds of music I just don't like rap and never will, But it seems that is all I hear coming out of cars with those blasted boomer speakers there should be a law against those. How can anyone concentrate driving wilth that noise beating in their ears. No wonder there are so many accidents

I love talk radio it stimulates the brain and makes you think. I love oldies but even the oldies station stopped playing Buddy Holly, Bill Haily and the Comets and many others like the coasters, or the Beach Boys. I work in broadcasting and dream of starting my own station and play the forgotten artist.

I'll do that. I work at a public television station in Moline, IL and we are running a jazz special with Chris Botti. He is coming to the Quad Cities and we are giving tickets away as a preimum for becoming a member of our channel

True it is common, but all I ever hear in this area is loud hip hop in this area. Is this what music has become?

Yeah, I think a lot of oldies stations went from 50's and 60's and some early 70's to 60's and all of the 70's. I'm not complaining because I like the 70's, but I've heard songs I never thought I'd hear on "oldies" radio. Having 50's mixed in is fun tho, so I miss that extra variety.

Fleet/Tony, one of my favorite years for music was 1982! I'm shocked!

(Just kidding. )

Agreed. I can't say I've ever heard a song by Britney Spears in its entirety.
I do like a lot of the music put out by Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, on the other hand. Josh Groban is pretty high up there, too.

As for me, I used to listen to top 40 up until the mid-late 1980s, about the time bubblegum acts like Debbie Gibson and Tiffany hit the scene. (Remember them?) One of the radio stations I listen to, WMMX "Mix" 107.7, airs a retro Top 40 with Casey Kasem every Saturday morning from 7-10 (with time constraints it's more like a Top 30), and their favorite years range from 1982 to 1988, although once they had the faith to reair a 1981 Top 40. (If it's 1987 or 1988 I'll turn it off, LOL.)

Such is another reason I thought 2007 would have been an appropriate year to end "The Wonder Years." It would be 1987 on the show had the powers that be at ABC had the smarts to continue it.

On average, around '89, pop music got better, and matured. It's the only era that I liked top 40 music.
Remember "Luka", "Nothing compares 2 U", Wilson Philips, "Another day in Paradise", "Candy". Artists evolved like: The B-52's(Roam, Deadbeat Club), and Madonna(Cherish, You can't hurt me now).

Back to the topic: Don't you all know people(over 30) who don't listen to music? Today's music is no excuse - There's music from so many time periods, cultures and genres. I discovered Celtic when I was 30. And music is so accessable and cheap: used CD's and records, XM radio, internet...
I understood your post to mean people in general.
I happen to know some extreme cases, but yes, in general I think more people are forgetting about music and how good it CAN be.

i don't understand how music could be 'out'. sure, most mainstream music is complete trash nowadays, but there are so many types of music and artists out there, it could never be out.

sometimes you just have to dig around to find the good stuff.
