In the bank when J.J's said-"80 hours a week was more Hours than Johnny Carson worked in a whole year" I felt it was something behind that statement so I started digging and came up with
In 1979, NBC president Fred Silverman began to complain publicly that Carson took too much time off and that he ought rely less on repeats of past shows. Just as publicly, Carson promptly announced his intention to quit the show as soon his contract expired. A frightened Network then captitulated as he knew it would, giving him even more time off then he had before as NBC knew that even Carson's reruns made every other Late night competitor seem puny.
