Was Edith always a dingbat in every season? Right now I'm on season 4 and watched for episodes of season 4 so far and Edith is still the same. Does she a little more intelligent later on, and stand up to Archie? Also was there a black Elmo in All in the Family?

I keep wondering about that chinky robe Edith wore to the slumber party in the episode "Archie Goes Too Far".

the word is "chinese", please don't use "chinky".

I haven't seen the show in a while (is it still on TV LAND?) But, yes, she did get slightly more innteligant and stood up to Archie sometimes.
And, no, there was never a "black Elmo" on the show.

Actually there is a black elmo I put up this post like four months ago before I found out. I found that out in season 6 on the episode "Archie the Donor" and found out there is a black elmo and is probably the only time they ever showed him.

Three questions:
1. Has anybody looked at "Archie Goes Too Far"?
2. Was the robe even Chinese?
3. What did the robe look like and how does Edith look in it?

In the early episodes, Edith was less "dingbatty", probably closer to Jean Stapleton's actual personality. Her voice was in a lower pitch, also.
In the first season she did act and sound different, not like the Edith (Ding-bat) we're used to.

In the fifth season on we started seeing Edith standing up to Archie more. I love the All's Fair episode when Mike and Gloria taught Edith about fair fighting. Archie couldn't handle his wife not bucking down to him. I loved that episode. Especially when she told Archie, "No I am not going to shut up because you told me to. I got a right to talk just like everyone else." I was screaming on that one.
