...Why the heck were they clapping when the IRS guy left the diner. It didn't make any sense to me.

It didn't to me either. I was thinking of Good Times when that occurred.

So very true. The guy just got through saying that he repossessed his own mother's car,,,then he left and the audience clapped. lol

There are many Alice moments where the audience will clap when someone leaves the diner. I always found that to be strange. I wonder if it is just the audience's way of clapping for the performance the actor just gave in that scene. I also wonder if it was staged that way. Perhaps the stage crew told the audience or had one of those APPLAUSE signs to alert the audience when to clap. Still, it was a tv show, not a broadway show, I don't need to hear the audience clap for such moot points.

Maybe a standing ovation because the actor played the part well? It was funny to hear him say-"It's my job Mom!-lol

So you think the applause was for the actor, not the character?

You'll see that actor again on a 4th or 5th season episode (can't remember without looking up :) ), where Alice, Vera, Mel and Belle get trapped in the diner with a bunch of watchdogs.

Still, I agree with Brian that it was odd.

This reminds me of one of the seasons of the Britcom Are You Being Served?. There were a few episodes where they applauded after every scene.
