LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actress Kim Basinger has hired a bodyguard for her 11-year-old daughter after a voice-mail tirade by her father, actor Alec Baldwin, was made public last week, Basinger's spokeswoman said on Monday.

The divorced couple's bitter six-year custody battle over their only daughter, Ireland, burst into the open last Thursday when the celebrity Web site TMZ.com posted a recording of a blistering phone message Baldwin had left the child, calling her a "rude, thoughtless little pig."

The 49-year-old actor, who co-stars as a venal, egocentric TV executive on the NBC sitcom "30 Rock," said on the tape that he was furious at not being able to reach his daughter for a prearranged telephone conversation, and threatened to fly out from New York City "to straighten your ass out."

Baldwin later apologized for his temper with a statement on his own Web site, and accused his ex-wife of leaking the voice mail tape to the media in defiance of a court order sealing material related to their custody proceedings.

But Basinger's spokeswoman, Annett Wolf, issued a statement on Monday denying the actress released the voice mail and said the recording was "not sealed under a court order."

"Kim did hire security in response to the media attention on her daughter in order to allow Ireland to maintain her regular routine and activities uninterrupted," Wolf said.

TMZ reported that a Los Angeles County Superior Court commissioner temporarily suspended Baldwin's visitation rights last week after hearing the tape.

Representatives for Basinger, 53, who won the Oscar for her supporting role in the 1997 film "L.A. Confidential," declined to comment on that report, and Baldwin's lawyer was not immediately available for comment.

The couple married in 1993, and she filed for divorce in 2001. The divorce was granted the following year, but they have continued to fight in court over custody and other issues.

I really feel sorry for Ireland. No kid should have to go through this.

"Come to New York to straighten you out"...Gee. Welcome to Stalk-O-Rama.

Good one, Mr. Baldwin. Hope we don't have a repeat of what happened here the other week at the University of Washington here in Seattle.

Now I'm not defending Alec Baldwin's tirade at all, but someone from Miss Basinger's camp leaked the now infamous answering machine message to the public, so all of this brand new "media attention" Ireland is facing is not all Baldwin's fault.

Very true. And frankly, I don't think the girl needs a body guard...

LOS ANGELES - Kim Basinger wants Alec Baldwin to get a grip on his "unstable and irrational behavior," but she didn't leak the threatening tirade he left on their daughter's voice mail, her rep said yesterday.

The Oscar-winning actress has hired a bodyguard to protect Ireland from the media furor unleashed by her father's angry outburst, Basinger spokeswoman Annett Wolf said.

The long-simmering custody battle between the acrimonious pair resurfaced last week when TMZ.com posted the taped message Baldwin left after 11-year-old Ireland failed to answer a scheduled call. In his rant, the "30 Rock" star called the girl a "rude, thoughtless little pig."

Baldwin, 49, later apologized for losing his temper with a statement on his own Web site, and accused his ex-wife of leaking the voice-mail tape to the media in defiance of a court order sealing material related to their custody dispute.

Wolf denied yesterday the actress released the voice mail and added the recording was "not sealed under a court order."

^ I love that.

To me that says "We deny leaking the recording, but if someone finds out we did do it, we've already found a way to make us immune from any type of blame."

I thought they were trying to find out who leaked the message. How long does that take?

The owner of TMZ, Harvey Levin (a lawyer himself) kinda said something the other day that made it sound like they (TMZ) may have gotten Ireland's permission to release the message since it was left on her cell phone. However, no adult can enter into a contract with a minor, so there goes that theory.
