No offense to Polly Holiday, but she just didn't have the looks for all these guys to ogle over her. They should have cast a better looking woman to play that type of role and just kept Flo SASSY.

I guess I agree with you. No offense to Polly Holliday. It's kinda the same thing with Linda Lavin and singing. She wasn't the best, but they made Alice out to be such a great singer.

I think one reason it was accepted was because at that time, celebrities were so distant from us, and there weren't many choices of what to watch, so we just accepted the icons we saw.

I think the same is true with singers. Someone at work told me that she grew up thinking that the New Kids on the Block were really great. But when she listened to their music when she was twenty-nine, she realized they weren't good singers.

If anything, I think the character showed that at Flo's age, you can still be HOT. I don't think she was HOT mind you, but the truckers seemed to think so. I guess they didn't get much action anyways, so here was a woman who was so full of herself (in a good way) and flaunted her assets and didn't seek "love"...just attention and some good times with a man. She was a hussy, no doubt abt that, but she did it so good that I found her so darn cute and funny. Not at all a bitch.

Look at the show in context: Most of the patrons at Mel's Diner were middle-aged trucker types. Nobody in that diner was really all that young or hip. So to them, Flo probably did pass for sexy. Hell, most of them were probably drunk or too tired to get a real good look at her.

Or maybe they just didn't care. Flo was there, and made herself, ahem, available. That simple.

Sometimes its the attitude & not the beauty that works.

I was thinking about that. That is very true.

I was thinking about that. That is very true.

I have met girls who initially may not have appeared "sexy" to me, but after getting to know them, I've found them sexy. Sometimes attitude and the way someone has about them can be very sexy.

And conversely, you can met a woman who appears "sexy" physically at first, but is boring or just not very appealing once you get to know them.

So damn true.
I loved Flo and her personality. She is someone I could have worked with. She is so funny. She was vivacious and had spunk. She was very young at heart and it showed outwardly. That is what made her sexy. She also probably made those guys feel good, whatever it was she did for them, even if it was just making out with them. She probably made them feel like winners rather than losers, made them feel important, made each man feel like he was special.;)

And she wasn't shy at all, she told it how it was and some men found that to be a great turn on. Some men just like strong and flaunty women.

Oh hell yeah. Some guys are jerks and can't stand strong women and them telling it like it is, you know. Flo was gung-ho.

If I can take some liberty and use imagination in this one I believe Flo in her younger years was a hottie but she was a lot of fun that made coming into the diner easy to bear. Vera was so out of touch mentally that she was not likable, especially in the first two seasons, and Alice was a knowitall on every subject given and want to solve everyone's problems. The latter gets on one's nerves especially when it's unsolicted.

Linda Lavin is quite attractive and too bad they did not give Alice more men to date. Also I did think Linda was a good singer especially when she did broadway numbers. When she did Cole Porter songs that was when Linda was at her best in singing.

Flo is in the same sort of league as Mona on "Who's the Boss?" and Blanche on "The Golden Girls". While they may not be the most visually sexy women, it's their attitudes and personalities that really draw the men to them.

Well, Blanche was extremely experienced and talented at sex, Mona loved to be physical, but Flo is a "good time" gal. She's definitely a woman, but she can be "one of the boys" so easily. She can bowl, drink beer, go for pizza, go to wrestlin' matches, any good ol' "guy stuff" with the middle-aged trucker men, and she's right at home with 'em. And the men love that about her. They love that she's game for their activities and fits right in. She's sassy, spunky, tell-it-like-it-is, and loves to just be "one of the boys".

Everybody was happy! LOL

Actually, I thought Katherine Helmond (Mona) was most definitely visually sexy - older woman or not. There was a natural thing about her that made her very hot, no matter what the age.

Not so much for me with Rue McClanahan, but if I was an older man, I could see what all the fuss was about.;)

The thing about Flo was that she genuinely LOVED men. Not just sex (although obviously that too-lol), but she really liked being in their company and seemed to feel more alive around them than with other women. That's what made her so appealing to the regulars, I believe. She told people what she thought no matter how it sounded or came out and she was very down to earth. In a way, if they had chosen someone who was truly a knockout model-type to play Flo, it wouldn't have been the same and she wouldn't have been nearly as memorable for some reason. JMO

Whatever the case may be, Polly Holliday sure brought a lot of fun to the role of Flo. Hard to believe this is the same woman who played Jill's mom on Home Improvement; the long-suffering wife of the Colonel (M. Emmett Walsh). The two of them were hysterical together.

P.S. That was a wig Polly Holliday wore as Flo, wasn't it? I don't think it was her real hair, but I could be wrong.

It was a wig. She also played in that 80's movie abt those creatures when they got wet and turned into monsters, I think. I just know she appeared in some movie like that. She looked older without that wig.

That'd be "Gremlins". She was also in the Lindsay Lohan remake of "Parent Trap"

Oh, I completely agree. LOL She was a horrible "woman", but she pointed out some ugly truths---Flo was trying to be too young, Mel looked a mess, and I would say Vera needed to eat more, but there are those of us out there who love to eat and just can't gain weight, lol.

About Vera: I'm exhibit A. The heaviest weight I've ever been is 120, and I'm 5'8.
