The big screen adaptation of Get Smart starring Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway, hasn’t even finished shooting, yet Warner Bros has already greenlit a sequel. Actually, they gave the greenlight before the movie was even cast. And get this, the sequel is also in production now. You read that right, in production NOW.

The Direct-to-DVD sequel/spin-off, Get Smarter: Bruce & Lloyd Out of Control, will arrive in stores 10 days following the theatrical debut of Get Smart. The movie will focus on two secondary characters from the main movie: Bruce (played by Heroes star Masi Oka) and his geeky sidekick Lloyd (played by Nate Torrence).

Confused? Well, the studio wants to avoid that reaction completely and has planned to start advertising the DVD release only after the film’s first weekend at the box office.

Movies, television, entertainment of any sort has always been about money on one level, but it's distressing to see how soulless the whole mindset has become and, as a result, how devoid of true art.

Example from a different medium: it used to be that if a comic book series came up with an exceptional idea it would have wide appeal with fans and collectors. They, in turn, would value a particular issue more highly and eventually it would be a high-priced rarity AND an artistic landmark. Collectors would have fulfillment in their hobby, comic companies would make money, and, in general, there was something for everyone.

Fast-forward to the 1990's...comic book companies were planning four or five issue "special stories," on which marketing weasels would base a whole pre-publishing campaign to make sure readers knew they would not be cool if they didn't get the whole set when it came out. Then they would purposely print only about 60% as many of one of the issues to make it difficult to get them all and drive the price/value up. It made them money, but robbed all the meaning out of it for those who really enjoyed the medium.

I'm always concerned now-a-days that nostalgia projects like the Get Smart movie will be identified with a cross-marketing blitz aimed at people who need to be told what to like, rather than the great character comedy that originally made it work. I hope it doesn't suck. You ought to hear Wild Wild West fans talk about the Will Smith/Kevin Kline movie...they'd like the master and the negative to be cut up into guitar pics. Now that the studios have committed to a GS sequel AND a minor character spin-off, they've put themselves into a corner where it will all either be a smashing success or a fantastic disaster of epic proportions. God help us all.

All the threads here, plus wouldyoubelieve.com seem to indicate that the movie is going to be awful---and it probably will. I'm not sure MadScientist has hit on the reason for this, but history has shown that remakes of old shows usually wind up neither pleasing the show's original audience nor speaking to anyone new. Hollywood's idea of "updating" seems most often to change the tone so drastically that it doesn't work at all. :(

I saw the trailer for Get Smart the movie with Steve Carell.
And from just seeing the trailer I already don't like it.

I mean whats with him slowly ascending in the phone booth.
We all know that was not the way Max did it!

Why can't they just leave the concept alone and change the actors!
Everything does not need to be new!

The ONLY good thing that may come of this movie (That I have already learned to HATE) is that some TV stations may actually play the REAL Get Smart for awhile' during the blitz for this movie (Which might make people want to see the film; but, which will no doubt make them hate the movie even more when they realise how much better the TV show was!).
