How did you come by these numbers? I ask because I haven't seen every show (most of them) and the number of episodes that each character is in is interesting to me. It seems to suggest how much they were paid. I counted only 34 shows for Mike Evans and about one less for Damon plus fewer shows for Berlinda Tolbert. Tv.com has the cast lists episode by episode but some of them list the entire cast that was on the show at that time and others list all the actors who were ever on the show. I would have thought that Marla Gibbs was in a lot more shows than the Willis actors because it seems to me that once she came back to the show except for Blazing Jeffersons her contract required that she be in every episode. Also Isabel Sanford is in the first few minutes of In the Chips although I understand that her scene with Roxie Roker is edited out on TVland. She isn't in part 2 of Florence's New Job though. I have the year 5 dvd and its funny that Jay Hammer only appeared in 8 shows- and it seems that nearly all of them were filmed in the first 1/2 of the season- its like they figured that he just didn't bring it to the series and phased him out, spreading his appearances out over the season. Truthfully I didn't miss him at all once he left. How many shows did Charley, Ralph and Whttendale appear in? Charley and Ralph are each in at least one show in every year.

She was in that few in year 3? I have that season but I have to go back and count. Which ones isn't she in in season 7? The only 2 I haven't seen recently from that year are All I want for Christmas and the Hero (the first one with Hugo). Every other one from that year has her in it. Honestly I liked her as much as any other character but I could have used a break from her (she was on too much). So were the Willises in the last few seasons. I liked it better when there were 8 regulars and they could offer some variety in who showed up. Florence was a character that would have done better in smaller doses.

True. Funny that in year 1 Lionel and Bentley were the most seen supporting players, but Bentley worked better as a "pop in the door character". Many times his part has really nothing to do with the plot. If Mike Evans had stayed he probably would've continued to be seen in most of the shows, but Damon didn't bring as much to the table so we wind up seeing Tom Helen and even Florence more than him and when he quit he didn't seem to be missed that much.

I guess because they were a couple in the same age range as George and Louise there was more that could be done with them and Florence lived there so she was more integral than any other supporting character to the point that in several shows where she isn't seen they have to make a point of explaining where she is (George and Whitty for example). Imagine if either Roxie Roker or franklin Cover had left in 1981 rather than any of the other supporting actors- the chemistry would've been thrown off and I suspect that the show would have ended much sooner than it did- not that the Willis characters made the show- they weren't strong enough to be spun off- interestingly I think that Lionel and Jenny could have been and if they gave Marla Gibbs a better storyline than Checking In she could've carried her own show. The Willis actors and Paul Benedict were true supporting sitcom characters- they added just the right seasoning to the particular roles they played but they would not have made it as lead characters.

yeah if the Willis left or even if Florence left, the show would have dropped in the ratings badly by the next season and would have been canceled shortly after.
it was a good thing Florence came back after checking in was canceled, the show did start getting weak by season 8 but Florence did Need To Comeback, and by then 4 castmembers were no longer there by the point.
and i was also Happy That Bentley came back in season 10 ,but the cast felt empty for some reason in the last 4 years.

if The Willis Or even Florence Left The Ratings Would Have Went Down Alot faster then they did in season 2-5,i was happy that Marla Gibbs(Florence) Returned and that checking in was canceled,by season 8 the show started getting weak and Florence Needed to come back ,she made the show a little better in the last few years and by this time 4 castmembers Gone and they couldn't afford losing another castmember(she was the best supporting character).
and i was happy that Paul Benedict(Bentley)Returned In season 10,the cast did felt empty in those last 4 years.

I think that if Mike Evans and Paul Benedict stayed and Marla Gibbs' show caught on and she didn't come back the show could have kept itself up. That other maid Carmen wasn't very good though. They needed a much more aggressive person for that part of she was to be regular player. I liked Louise's father, I've Got A Secret, The Separation and Blazing Jeffersons better than the other shows that aired in 1981-82 so the show could've done well without Florence.
