hey all :) i'm not really new, i come to these forums a lot, just never really posted here before. I'm 19 and i'm from LA. Anyways, i just wanted your opinions and all that on this. I'm about to graduate high school in a few weeks and i never had a job before, so now that my aunt is able to get me in a position at her work place, i want to grab this opportunity but i'm scared to do so. Last year i wanted to get a job and wasn't scared at all (my mom didn't want me to work), but now all of the sudden i am. I also can be pretty shy around some people so i dont feel an interview would go too well with me, and my boyfriend has had several jobs and he tells me they can be tough.
So i want to go through with this because its past time i get a job, i need the money, and i want to know what to expect. I'm also going to go to college and i'm wondering if a job could affect my grades and studying. :wave:

My first job was nearly 20 years ago when I was a teenager. I worked at a fast food restaurant. LOL! Looking back on it, I did have a lot of fun times there! :lol:

Americorps national service. A domestic Peace Corps. Located all over America. Jobs range from Environment (what I did) to education, to disaster relief, to community improvement.

Not technically a "job", you are a volunteer. But you get paid. A good option if you are uncertain what to do with your life. And an excellent thing to put on your resume. Employers love to see potential employees active in there community.

Service can last anywhere from six months, to two years. You get a living stipend(not officially a paycheck) of $800 a month. Some programs give more. Others give less but offer housing. At the end of your service, you get an education award.

It was the greatest thing I've done with myself so far. I felt I made a real difference and It was a great way to brake into the job world. It gave me contacts that have lead me to were I am now. Even gave me some insight into what I like and don't like about my potential career options.

My first job was at Target. I began there in September of 1994 and stayed with the company until June 1999. I made a lot of great memories and friends there.

i started working when i was 14 (grade 9) at a grocery store!
i am now 19 (turning 20 in less than 2 weeks) and i continue to work part time while in school. (and full time over the summers) i am now almost finished second year univeristy, and i am still an honours student!
when i first started working my grades took a slight hit,
its just in how you manage your time, so i think you should go for it! just make sure you manage your time wisely!

My first job was a summer job at 15-I worked at a nursery school with another (adult of course) woman. I loved it soooo much and every summer until I was 18 I did the same thing. Now I'm almost 20 and work as a Personal Trainer/Nutrition and Wellness Expert.
It may seem hard at first *especially with school* but once you get into the swing of things it really becomes part of your routine. Having and making your own money is also a very rewarding experience.

I was 8 and I got paid $20 to dress up as a chicken for a flower shop. I know, wtf? And although, I don't get paid, I work for the yearbook by working the consession stands. I love working. I can't wait to get a job this summer.

I worked there a month and didn't like it because the owners were taking advantage of their military clients, they would make jokes about it. So if you don't like your first job, you don't have to stay there.
But do give it a chance. I went through an employment agency to get that job.

Off topic, but how where they taking advantage of them?

They were charging them more for their car coverage than civilians. Also they'd find excuses not to pay out some of the claims. I was 18 and was afraid to say anything about it but I knew it was wrong, so I quit. This was in the 70's.

My first job was working retail at Kohl's. It was okay, but not anything I want to do again. A lot of standing in uncomfy shoes, rude customers, slobs who don't put clothes back on racks. On slow days it was dreadfully boring.

As far as interviews, I'm shy too, but it doesn't matter much. Just answer the questions as honestly as you can. And they'll probably ask some really stupid questions too (every job I've interviewed for has been like that). Just come up with something that sounds good.

My first job was at my aunt and uncles` law firm, when was 15. I was an intern/clerk there until I was 18. I worked after school. I still go there from time to time if I need to make some quick cash, but the hours don't work for me like they used to. My first non~family job is now at a video store.

If you do decide to take the opportunity, I wish you all the best. I understand the whole shy thing, but a lot of it will most likely go away once you get into your work, and get to know the people in the workplace. At first, it might seem a little overwhelming, but you should try to stick with it, in hopes that ithat feeling will go away. Who knows, maybe you will come to love working there. If you don't like it that much at first, like someone already said here, just give it a little while to get used to.

As far as worrying about your grades and studying, you will notice that for yourself, and see if you could handle both. Your grades might slip a little at first, but they will probably bounce back up, once you get used to doing both.

My first job was a paper girl delivering newspapers at weekends when i was at school,then i worked at a radio station making coffees and stuff!!!:crazy:

I started my first job when I was 12 at a friend's video store, I helped out. And I worked for him for about 7 and a half years. Until he passed away in october of last year. And than I started working for a real estate company, as secretary/gopher/right hand man to the owner.
