Director Peter Segal says that the film version has been updated to satire the disconnect between government agencies post-9/11. The movie’s storyline focuses on “KAOS’ blackmailing the United States by threatening to give away launch codes for nuclear bombs that are in the hands of bad guys.” Max’s mission is to find and stop the bombs, ultimately saving the world.

The new film also tells the origin story of how Smart became an agent and met 99. The twist this time around involves Agent 99 as the veteran spy who takes Max under her wing. It looks like Hathaway will be more active as the movie version of 99.

Carell (40 Year Old Virgin) plays Maxwell Smart, and Anne Hathaway (Devil Wears Prada) is Agent 99. Alan Arkin plays the chief of CONTROL, the organization that fights the evil foces of KAOS. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Agent 23) and Terrence Stamp also have been cast.

Get Smart will hit theaters on June 20th 2008.

Looks good but sounds iffy. Why have plot twists? It really annoys me when they change the premise of shows like this.

Words that describe my feelings so far about the upcoming movie: wary, cautious, unsure, leery.ohno:

The premise changes we already know about make it pretty likely that this movie could be added to the exhaustive list of terrible and horrible remakes where the tone has been completely ruined--------satire of lack of communication between agencies in the post-9/11 America?????????----99 is an experienced agent when Max first gets hired??????!!!!!!

I'm sitting in Don Adams' seat at this particular horse race and my bet is that it will look like Adam Sandler wrote an episode of the X-Files.

Anne Hathaway is 24, Steve Carell is 45...

So, is 99 supposed to be Max's daughter?

OH MY GAAAAWD!!!! They're making the same mistakes they made when they first attempted to bring it to the big screen, way back in 1980. When, oh when, will Hollywood learn???
This movie has "disaster" written ALL over it!
It sounds like it'll be like that HORRIBLE THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES movie!

Well, look at it this way, if they let Steve Carell write some of it, will probalby be better than "The Nude Bomb."

I just read all about it on the GET SMART webpage; wouldyoubelieve.com and from what they say; it sounds AWFUL!!!

They didn't consult with ANYONE from the show; even though they're mostly still availible! Mel Brooks even offered to help with the script; but they turned him down.
