MacNicol was born in Dallas, and graduated from the University of Minnesota. After working in regional theater for a few years, he moved to New York, where he landed a prominent role in the original production of Beth Henley’s Crimes of the Heart. It opened off-Broadway in 1980 and on Broadway the following year. MacNicol made his film debut the same year as he first appeared on Broadway, as Galen, the apprentice to the title character in Dragonslayer. A year later, he starred as Stingo in Sophie’s Choice, opposite Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline. In his first two films, MacNicol had been, if not the star, the point-of-view character in each. But he never became a leading man. His subsequent film roles–in Ghostbusters II, Addams Family Values, Baby Geniuses, etc.–have been supporting parts. MacNicol did, however, spend at least two decades as a television mainstay. He has been a regular on Chicago Hope for two seasons, on season 6 of 24, and on all six seasons of CBS’s Numbers, as well as on other, short-lived series. His best-known TV role, which brought him an Emmy, was as John Cage on Ally McBeal. Recently, MacNicol has made several appearances on Veep, as lobbyist Jeff Kane. Last year he was nominated for the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor. |
