I have a couple of things that I would like to know about the arrangement of television DVD collections:

1. First, is there any tried-and-true method of arrangement of television DVD collections?

2. How do some of the members of this forum arrange theirs (i.e., how do you arrange yours)?

The reason why I asked the second question is that I arrange mine in a chronological order by season; since I have only '80's series on DVD, I have at least one DVD set for each season-- from 1979-83, then from Spring '85 to 1986. I fill in the gaps as I get new season sets. In my method, midseason replacements count, as do multiple seasons of the same series.

i usually put similar series together, most of them are in the same time periods

I Dream of Jeanie next to Bewitched and Tabitha; Bob Newhart next to Mary Tyler Moore; Smallville next to Lois and Clark, next to Greatest American Hero and Wonder Woman; Buffy and Angel together, etc...

That's very interesting-- you have a very good way of keeping yours arranged. I enjoyed hearing about it. It goes without saying that different people do it different ways.

Mine are always arranged chronologically, with shows that debuted in the same season grouped alongside each other etc. Gives me a sense of TV history unfolding on the shelves.

This only applies to prime time comedy and drama shows, with all animated, variety, talk shows etc. grouped separately.

That is exactly the same thing that I do with mine. I wonder if there are any others that are like that. I believe that the way that you and I do it is a very good way of doing it.

Alphabetical order

I do mine for favorite. I put the latest season I have on top.

I do it by what ever TV Show I get next. For Example First was The Golden Girls, then I would add the other 6Seasons. Then the next show was Ellen, and I would get the Seasons for that show, and so on.

My TVDVD Shelf is arranged like this:

From left to right...
Frasier (9 Sets), Wings (1 Set), The King of Queens (4 Sets), Seinfeld (3 Sets), Just Shoot Me! (1 Set), Married ... With Children (3 Sets), Will & Grace (3 Sets).

No Particular order for me.

Okay, then, that settles it. I just had the thought in mind and thought that I'd ask. I appreciate, very much, all the responses.

If I had enough sets, I'd divide everything into genre and put the series in alphabetical order by show in said groups.

Alphabetical order, although my shelves are a mess at the moment. I have a large shelf in a corner of my closet, very handy but lately I've just been throwing my sets onto it and it needs to be organized.

Glad to know there are others out there with the same "history" approach to arranging things. :) I do the same things with movies, but in recent years boxed sets of things where four disparate movies are put in one package (Gary Cooper, John Wayne sets etc.) makes that more problematic.

I do mine by "years". I have 50's and 60's together, then 70's, then 80's and then 90's and 00's together:) I have tried straight alphabetical but it seems more chaotic that way. I have very few 50's and 90's and 00's that's why they are grouped the way they are. It works for me.

vashti1999... is that a store or a home collection? :) Many of the sets appear to be unopened.

I arrange mine alphabetically, its just easier to find what I'm looking for that way. I do the same with my DVD-Movies.

I also arrange mine alphabetically and chronologically (by season).

I have mine in 3 stacks in teh corner of room right now. I'm trying to look for the right sized DVD shelf, but I can't seem to find one that'll fit my DVD's and fit in my room. Although, I am looking forward to placing them in alphabetical order.

I Do Mine On A Shelf First By The Decade Then The Show That Came First Then i Put The Seasons In Order.

Mine are more or less random, though, i do try to keep shows from the same series together....i'm talking anime here, I only have Corner Gas as far as TV shows go

Here is an updated pic of mine, with my recent acquisitions of "MacGyver" S1 and "Hawaii Five-O" S3, and my mother's acquisitions of "The Waltons" S2 and S3. "The Waltons" is one of my mother's favorite series, but she only has S2 and S3 of it from 1973-75; however, she just purchased S1 (1972-73) from Amazon.

Mostly whim. I group seasons of the same show together obviously, but that's it. Stuff I love goes where I can get to it easily, while stuff I just like gets put elsewhere.

That's exactly what I do, Dean Winchester(at least, the chronological part-- I'm not big on alphabetizing). I'm not far from having a 18 to 19 year collection, both of my favorite series and my mother's. I put my mother's "Waltons" sets in with mine so she could get to them easier. She purchased "The Waltons" because it is one of her favorite series of the past. That said, Dean Winchester, I do appreciate the response.

I think it really depends on how much you have. Back in the days before I sold my cd's since I converted everything digital, I had almost a thousand cd's. So alphabetical was pretty much the only way where I would easily be able to grab a cd that begins with a B without fishing through numerous cd's that begin with a J or P or whatever. So the same mentality has transferred to my DVD

Good point - when I first started collecting, I would just put whatever new series I bought on the end (with new seasons going with the others). But now, I have well over 100, and keeping them in alphabetical order just seems most logical.

Then I type a list and tape it ontop of the case telling me where everything is. It works very nice. They don't have to be alphabetical or even together for that matter. I have one season of Mary Tyler Moore starting at 36 and another one starting at 338, but I know exactly where they are.

I don't have mine in any particular order; exept if I have more than one season of a show, I put all the seasons right next to each other. Seasons 1 and 2 (and soon to be followed by 3, 4, & 5) of "THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW" are stored right next to each other, from left to right, seasons 1, 2, & 3 of "MASH" are right next to each other; also from left to right, same with the two sets I have of "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES-ULTIMATE COLLECTION", and my 3 STOOGES DVDs (allright, they're technecly not TV stars, but they made 2 pilots, a lot of TV appearences, and of course, the're shown on TV).

(and then, my Christmas DVDs; I keep stored away in the closet with my Christmas stuff)

I currently don't have any available shelves to put all my DVD's on, so they were just stacked up in the corner of my bedroom, which was hard, especially when I wanted to watch one. I was complaining to my kids about being careful around them, since they were knocking them over left and right.

So, they actually built me a shelf for mothers day (out of cardboard-LOL), and it actually works great. I just have it right now on top of my entertainment center until I can find room to buy an actuall bookcase or something, but I thought I'd share that all with you guys!

I tend to group by genre, e.g.: Brisco County with Legend with Wild Wild West or SportsNight with Freaks & Geeks or Keen Eddie with Moonlighting with Psych, etc. We just bought, and have to assemble, a couple of glass door bookcases so we can store our DVDs.
