This has been the week and a half from hell. A month ago, my sister's stomach started hurting frequently. She went to our GI doctor who said it could possibly be an ulcer. At 13 years old, I found that a bit strange, but as we all know, sickness holds no limits. He scheduled some tests for her and that was that.

Anyway, two weeks ago, my mom had to take her to the ER. She was doubled over in pain and couldn't move. The doctors said, "well it could be your appendix, but we're not sure. Here's a CAT scan, go to your doctor tomorrow" and sent her home. Last Monday (March 26th) she ended up in the hospital because they didn't know what was going on and didn't want to send her home. The next day, she lay in pediatric ICU. Her appendix BURST. In the hospital. Under the eye of three doctors! My mother was... livid. When she asked why they didn't take the appendix out in the first place, they said "Well, we knew she had appendicitus, but we couldn't find them to take them out". Afterwards, they opened her up to remove the remains of the appendix and see what damage the poison did to her. Over the course of four days, they pumped nine litres of poison from her.

The doctors said she was lucky she didn't die. A friend of mine died in 7th grade because her appendix burst... I was just beside myself when this happened to my sister. She's doing okay now, but she's on 3 antibiotics to clear up the infection she contracted. Now please tell me if I'm overreacting, but these doctors go to college for like, 8 years, plus several residencies, and they can't find a ****ing set of appendix? Good God... sometimes I wonder.

Anyway, please send prayers and thoughts her way. My family may have it's issues, but no one deserves to go through this.

You're not overreacting. I'd certainly be quite livid, myself, if this happened to someone I love.

Thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

NO!! you are absolutely not overreacting!! I would be livid, too, if they did the same thing to my sister, or any members of my family.

The doctors said they could find it? Well, I can't say I'm extremely knowledgable about medicine but I've never heard that before. How can you not find a burst appendix?!!

My prayers are with your sister.

Tell them that you can't find the money to pay their bill when they send it to you since they seem incapable of finding an appendix!! Idiots!!

Thanks guys for the prayers. She just came home a few hours ago. She can't even move much. She couldn't stand to take a shower so she had to take a bath. I just feel so bad.

And Bobby F, you've got the right idea. Unfortunately (in this case), we have excellent medical insurance and the insurance covers it, or else our lawyer would've already had a lawsuit on his desk.

What a frightening situation for your family! I'm glad that your sister was at least at the hospital when her appendix burst, even if the doctors didn't remove the organ before it burst. I'll keep her in my thoughts and prayers that she makes a speedy and complete recover! :)

OMG. That is just horrible. NINE litres of poisons and toxins in her body, and these quacks can't even find a freakin' APPENDIX??!!! Did they get their medical credentials from Dr. Nick Riviera from The Simpsons or something??? That is so messed up. God knows you and your family have been through so much this past year. I'm praying for you and your sister. We should be so glad and thankful that she's alive. :crying: I hope she gets better soon.

Karly, that story sent shivers down my spine. Your sister came very close to dying. I just can't believe it. I've never sued anyone in my life, and I'm not lawsuit happy; however, what happened to your sister was a clear cut case of malpractice. I would sue. She almost died.

Your sister is in my prayers, and I hope she has a speedy recovery. I'm sorry she and your family had to go through this nightmare.

Wait...they didn't give her an appendectomy because THEY COULDN'T FIND HER APPENDIX? Um...what did they need, a road map? It hangs off the cecum (the first part of the large intestine). Right side of the body. Wow...look at me, I could be an ER doctor!

Your sister sounds very lucky. She's a fighter. I'm with Janice...I smell malpractice. That is seriously beyond comprehension.

Having my appendix burst is a huge fear of mine. I wish I could just have it taken out now. Doesn't do anything anyway.

Your sister had God watching over her! I am so shocked and pissed that this occurred. Shouldn't have happened and I hope your family gets through this, it could have been a tragedy. I will have her in my prayers and believe me, this needs to be looked into, SERIOUSLY!

I'm so sorry your sister had to go through this and I'll keep her in my prayers. You're not overreacting. Those doctors should have their license to practice medicine taken away.

Karly I'm so sorry this happened. It's been my experience that the majority of ER docs aren't necessarily leaders in their field (top and upper-mid tier hospitals excepted).

The reason your family GI probably missed it is if the complained-about pains were "stomach", they probably didn't think to look at the appendix, which isn't stomach. In addition, if the stomach pains were all that were presenting initially, they might not have had a reason to think it. In addition, by default, gastrointerologists are "programmed" to look for the cause as being...well...related to the GI system. As such, unless it presents with all the classic symptoms, they very well might miss it. I don't blame the GI as much.

But there was absolutely no excuse for an entire array of "doctors" at the ER level to miss it - they're not pre-programmed for bias towards GI symptoms, and as appendicitis is an extremely common ailment, they should have screened for it early onward I'm a bit confused here - did they say they couldn't find the PERSON to remove it, or they couldn't find the damn appendix. If it's the former, once they REALIZED it was the appendicitis, they should have scheduled for removal immediately - call whomever the hospital tasks to do them, get them off the 16th hole, and tell them to drive their @$$ to the hospital. To let someone's freakin appendix BURST is absolutely abhorrent, and heads should be rolling - THIS is why there are malpractice lawsuits (not because that scar from your knee surgery didn't heal fast enough for you, but because of THIS).

And if they couldn't find the appendix, well, my God. I'm an undergrad Biology major hopefully on my way to working in the same profession as these imbeciles, and I've known where the appendix is since I was NINE - and in an emergency pinch I could probably perform an emergency appendectomy if a proper one couldn't be performed. If THAT'S what you mean, contact your lawyer - if someone with the title of Doctor doesn't know where the appendix is - IT"S BASIC ****ING HUMAN ANATOMY - they need to lose their license, for the good of society.

It absolutely sickens me to see incompetent imbeciles like this ruining the name of medicine, and I genuinely hope people get fired, lose their licenses, etc. over this - a 13 year old should not almost DIE because "we couldn't find them to take them out" - whichever meaning that has. I'm glad to hear they at least got the antibiotics started. and toxins pumped, in time. your sister will be in my thoughts.

Geez, the first thing I would look into with her symtoms would be the appendix. This is really a serious matter! I sure hope that she recovers quickly!

Sorry that happened to your sister. Sue the bastards. That was malpractice at best but I say it was more negligence than anything. They neglected the girl. If that was my kid, you don't even even want to know.

This, among many other reasons, is why I don't trust doctors.

All they really know how to do is give drugs and cut people open. And often, they can't even do that right....

So glad your sister is alright, Karly.

That is absolutely disgusting how these doctors responded to your sisters condition, and I just hope that they have to take some serious accountability for their irresponsible actions. That excuse they gave, was complete B.S., and it never should have happened!!! I am so sorry that you and your family and especially your sister had to go through that!!! :( I can't even imagine the pain that she must have gone through, as well as the fear and worry that you and your family was put through. I will definitely keep your sister in my prayers!!! I'm so glad she's going to be okay!! God Bless You All!!!
