STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Metallica may be a cool name for a heavy metal band, but a Swedish couple is struggling to convince officials it is also suitable for a baby girl.

Michael and Karolina Tomaro are locked in a court battle with Swedish authorities, which rejected their application to name their six-month-old child after the legendary rock band.

"It suits her," Karolina Tomaro, 27, said Tuesday of the name. "She's decisive and she knows what she wants."

Although little Metallica has already been baptized, the Swedish National Tax Board refused to register the name, saying it was associated with both the rock group and the word "metal."

Tomaro said the official handling the case also called the name "ugly."

The couple was backed by the County Administrative Court in Goteborg, which ruled on March 13 that there was no reason to block the name. It also noted that there already is a woman in Sweden with Metallica as a middle name.

The tax agency appealed to a higher court, frustrating the family's foreign travel plans.

"We've had to cancel trips and can't get anywhere because we can't get her a passport without an approved name," Tomaro said.

Oh brother!! I like Metallica, too, but I would never dream of naming my child that!! Some parents are so stupid. They don't think into the future and the teasing their child is going to have to endure when she goes to school.

The comment from the mother "She's decisive and she knows what she wants" - The kid is only 6 months old!! What, did the child 'decide' she wanted to be named Metallica?:p

I'm glad their favorite band isn't Carcass or Death Angel!!

If you think that's bad, A couple here in town named their child after Hank Williams Jr But they named him Bocephus instead of Hank.

Poor kids, to get stuck with such strange names.

Another reason some people shouldn't be allowed to have kids.:bonk:

Notice the parents have relatively normal names, yet they want their kid to go through life with a name like "Metallica". What are people supposed to call her for short, "Metal"? "Lica"?

I guess it could be worse. They could have named her Quiet Riot, or worse... Limahl.;)

So is the Swedish National Tax Board up in arms because it has to do with heavy metal music, or because it's an infringement on the band's name? Doesn't the board LIKE heavy metal music? Gothenburg is supposed to be a huge metal town now.

Why NOT have the kid named after something metal-oriented, that's appropriate? Metallica seems to have been, errr, taken, by four American guys from Norwalk, California now currently residing up the coast.

Btw, did you know that Metallica (not the baby, the band) is presently recording a new album? Their new instrumental, "The Ecstasy of Gold", is on internet radio.

I don't understand why they can't name their child anything they want, from a legal standpoint.
