View Full Version : Was Barb Feldon too frightened to appear in the Nude Bomb?

Frightened of actor Dana Elcar (playing Ed Platt's old role of the Chief in the film). Elcar had been a regular on the vampire soap Dark Shadows (as Sheriff Patterson). He was in the two part ep where 99 finally has her babies. I wonder if (as Maclean Stevenson was afraid of DS's Conrad Bain when the two did Diff'rent Strokes eps together) Feldon feared Elcar.

According to Ms. Feldon, she was never asked to be a part of the movie.

I think I read somewhere that she WAS asked; but turned it down because the script was so bad.
I could be wrong though. I heard that a while ago.

Funny thing, i'd previously heard that she had refused to do it but, here's part of an interview in her own words, and it backs up what TV Gal says:

Q: Why weren't you in "Nude Bomb" — the 1980 Maxwell Smart movie?

A: They didn't ask me, frankly. I think when they conceived of the movie they were thinking of a James Bond kind of thing and they wanted like nubile ... twinkies? What did Max need with a wife? I'm only surmising that. Everybody's been too embarrassed over the years to even discuss it with me. Not that I cared at all because it got just such terrible reviews that I was sort of fortunate I dodged that bullet.

Q: I'm so glad to be the one to bring that up, then.

A: Oh, I don't care at all. When "Get Smart" was over I was really eager to do other kinds of roles. So to do a "Get Smart" movie at that point would not be at the top of my list, so when it happened without me I didn't even bat an eyelash.

She was right to turn it down. The made-for-TV movie "Get Smart Again!"
was ten times better.

yup.....I have "Get Smart Again!" on DVD and watch it about every 5-6 months or so....my only prob is that I always feel weirded out when they say "Conrad" Seigfried instead of "Ludwig" Von S

If I remember correctly, Don Adams says in one of the DVD special features that The Nude Bomb was aptly named because it was a total bomb----that he was never happy with it and realized it was a total "piece of $$$$"

I've never seen it, but I don't want too. And I'm glad he felt that way. I mean (not meant too seriously) the "gang" and esp 99?! lol That's why the "actual" movie is BETTER!

This may sound dumb, but I thought his name *was* Conrad?

As far as I know, he was never called Conrad until the CBS season, cause I have seasons 1-4 and he was always called Ludwig Von Seigfried on the NBC seasons; however, they also happened to mention once that Ludwig was a codename........so, it's kind of up in the air!
In the NBC seasons, the only "Conrad" is a hotel owner, Milton Conrad. (A twist on real-life hotel magnate Conrad Hilton)

Oh. I am almost certain that he's been called "Conrad" in the earlier Seasons. I'll keep an eye out. (I now own the series on DVD so I'll try and remember to 'catch it')

the only other name I recall other than Ludwig Von Seigfreid in the early seasons was "The great Seigfreid" in his first appearance; when he was a KAOS magician who kidnapped the Chief, leading to both KAOS & CONTROL kidnapping each other's agents until only Max and Seigfried were left!

Btw, the Nude Bomb wasnt great but, it did have a few good moments, such as Max riding after some enemy agents on his "Desk Mobile" a 60 mph desk and the appearance of the villain was HILARIOUS...... A man obssessed with fashion who was dressed head to toe, litterally: GOLD LAME fabric completely covered his body , including his head and face....it was especially funny because his fingers (also covered in gold lame) had thimbles on them, which hed click on his desk as he talked......I laughed my head off when they first showed him!!:roller:

If you mean she didn't look frightened when she did the two part ep with Elcar well maybe she hid it very good! As for the better movie I know Get Smart again had more original GS actors than the Nude bomb but by 1989 entertainment was more vapid in feeling than in 1980 so I rate the NB better as a film!

What is it with all this "frightening" and being afraid stuff? I don't get it.

Okay, I was just on a website that I haven't been on in a couple years and according to it, Barbara didn't want to be in TNB because she had other projects and didn't want to jump back into her role as 99 at the time.

Which goes against what I posted back when -- saying she was never asked! lol

OK, I have been watching a BF interview for the past couple of hours or so and she has just mentioned that she was never asked. And Don didn't even know!! He told her (before he had passed on) that he heard she had turned down the movie, but Barbara had let him know that she was never asked. (And she was glad that she was never a part of it)

I don't even know if I can even put into words how happy I am that the "situation" was cleared up for Don before he died. That may sound silly to some of you, but .. wow, I just can't explain it. lol

I loved the reunion movie. I've only watched the Nude Bomb twice and it really sucked. Two hours watching a bad movie....time I'll never get back.

Well I am glad she was a part of Get Smart Again. Because I loved her in that movie. But then again, I loved the movie was well.

If you truly were so worried about time spent watching it, you wouldn't have watched it twice. Just saying.
