She appeared in just one episode and yet she is there for the opening credits of that episode? Was she supposed to have joined the show?

Definitely not sure. But here is my best guess- could she have been given high billing as she was a popular actress (only a guess). I see she was in two episodes of the show. I think maybe she was in the one where she play an aunt who wants to take the girls away. I might be thinking of another actress, but that one now comes to my mind. Only guesses, sorry I am not much help.

Gimme a Break! did this with other guest stars as well. I think it was their way of emphasizing the guest stars of the show. I've always found it interesting too that they edited the opening sequence to show particular guest stars. I recall they did this with the 2-parter where Nell was managing the band with the guy who was an ex-con. I'm sure they did this on other episodes too. I think in the spin-off episode from Season 2, they showed Don Rickels in the opening sequence.

I totally forgot about the Don Rickels guest appearance! Was that the one where he was given a runaway teen girl to take charge of?

Yes, they did this with a lot of big names. I don't remember seeing Sammy Davis on the opening when he was a guest star. But a lot of other people did make the "Special Guest Star" credit after the original cast was shown.

However, in season 1, it says And Rue McClanahan, so I think there was a good possibility for her to be on the show. The Chief never said he was leaving Marion. She was not good for the show though. I liked just Nell and the Chief. I think it was too soon for the Chief to get married or date. Season 4 it should have happened, but Dolf got sick. Officer Dwyer would have made a good girlfriend of his on the series, had he lived.

The other episode she was in also had Milton Berle. They played a father/daughter from the "old country", and the father wanted the daughter to marry Grandpa because they had supposedly fooled around on the ship coming over to America. It was in the 4th season, titled "Grandpa's Secret Life"
