Starring Jennifer Hudson as Monica Donavon, a 25-year-old Buffalo columnist for a popular Buffalo newspaper company with a "good girl" reputation, who becomes a single mother after a risky one-night-stand with her married boss, Gary (James Pickens) after the office Christmas party. Gary finds out about Monica's pregnancy and decides to pay Monica off by giving her a blank check, in order to keep her mouth shut about the paternity of the "love child" or her job will be at stake-as well as Gary's "happy" marriage. Monica is insulted, throws his blank check back at him, and decides to quit her job. A pregnant Monica decides to leave Buffalo to return to her North Carolina hometown. Monica moves back in with her parents: Joe (John Amos) and Karen (Phylicia Rashad), and her 21-year-old semi-slacker brother: Jordan (Mehcad Brooks) who hasn't left the nest yet. Monica must inform her parents and Jordan about her pregnancy, which doesn't go too well with Joe as where Karen and Jordan are very supportive. Turns out Joe is more upset at the fact that Monica slept with a married men-let alone, her own boss..and that the father of the baby wants nothing to do with her or the baby. Besides Monica's entry into single motherhood, the Donavon family must deal with other family issues, such as: Jordan's sudden dropping out of college, Jordan dating a high school teenager-Katie (Joanna "JoJo" Levesque), Joe's favorite aunt, Aunt Rose (Della Reese) makes a surprise visit and annouces she is moving in with Joe and family (after an agrument with her son), and other trials and tribulations that the Donavon family must endurer.
