It seems that production on the Gospel According to Janis was supposed to gear up last November, but has hit a snag. According to an interview with VH1, Zooey Deschanel says that the movie is currently "on hold." Why? Deschanel says it "seems like it's been hard to get all the money and the rights in place." However, she wasn't specific on which rights are causing the hold -- the life or music rights.

Assuming that the issues can be worked out, the feature should prove to be interesting. Zooey's description of the flick is a bit curious. While the actress says that "it's about her vitality rather than her [tragedy]," almost the entire film will take place on October 4, 1970 -- the day that the musician overdosed and died. There isn't expected to be a slew of flashbacks; it seems that there will be some, but the film will mainly focus on that one day: "It's a sort of microscope rather than a general overview." So, it's an uplifting account of her final moments.

GOOD. As far as I am concerned, Lily Taylor should have done this movie and no one else.

It's already been done with Bette Midler. I hope it stays on hold.
