View Full Version : So who bought Season 1?
Edster2973 03-20-2007, 03:35 PM Hello all,
Just a thread to see who bought Season 1. I'd like to see if we could get a count of how the sales were potentially. So only respond if you've bought it. If you haven't bought the DVD yet but are planning to, don't reply until it's bought.
Thanks a lot!
Ed
Tynico 03-21-2007, 12:06 PM I did..and I love it.. too see it remastered is amazing...plus the full episodes .. scenes I never saw .. GREAT !!
RJinCA 03-21-2007, 01:42 PM I bought it yesterday, on release day, on my lunch hour. Maude is one of my very favorite sitcoms and I have been waiting for years for the DVD release. I taped them off TV LAND a number of years ago and it looks like TV LAND cut about 4 minutes out of each episode. I'm thrilled to have them uncut, finally. I first started watching Maude when I was a kid. When it was in first run on CBS. I loved it then, and I love it now.
OK SONY, BRING ON SEASON TWO! :D
Brieannas21 03-21-2007, 02:48 PM I might pick it up after school tonight.
Already Gone 03-21-2007, 02:58 PM It arrived yesterday from Amazon and I love it. I'll watch more tonight while i'm eating dinner. I would love to see all the seasons released. :)

Oh sure, right. Like that would've made any difference. For pete's sake, wasn't my original post enough to get the point across?

If this isn't enough to make my point, perhaps "Hooked On Phonics" would work for some of you then, hmm? Call now: 1-800-ABC-DEFG
In closing, all I have to say to you three is "God'll get you for that, Solomon, Irene and Brieannas21"...

Do you have Maude on DVD? Did you record it?
TVFactFan 03-21-2007, 06:43 PM Do you have Maude on DVD? Did you record it?
I have it on VHS, tapes that someone sent me
Brieannas21 03-22-2007, 01:11 AM Yes I like Maude, know the theme song by heart
TVJunkie101 03-22-2007, 09:31 PM I bought it. I purchased it from Amazon and it arrived on the release date. I've loved every minute of it. I'm shocked it doesn't do well in syndication. It's by far a classic series, although Maude's spiels every episode can be a little draining, the acting is top notch. I've seen a few episodes here and there but never any bulk episodes (I got TV Land after Maude was dumped by them).
I hope the set sells well enough for more DVD releases.
USATVFAN 03-22-2007, 09:46 PM the only All In The family Spinoff That Seems To do Good in Syndication Or Get Good Dvd sales Is The Jeffersons.
TVJunkie101 03-22-2007, 09:50 PM Yeah. It seems like Archie Bunker's Place is in limbo. And even though AITF and Jeffersons do well (I'm assuming they do) it's still taking them forever to be released on DVD.
Ireneparalegal 03-22-2007, 09:52 PM the only All In The family Spinoff That Seems To do Good in Syndication Or Get Good Dvd sales Is The Jeffersons.
I agree.
Edster2973 03-23-2007, 08:22 AM the only All In The family Spinoff That Seems To do Good in Syndication Or Get Good Dvd sales Is The Jeffersons.
What about Good Times? Surely we wouldn't have the whole series out on DVD now if sales had been poor. I don't care about whether it's an official spinoff or not; the fact is it does decently in syndication as well as having had healthy DVD sales.
Yeah. It seems like Archie Bunker's Place is in limbo. And even though AITF and Jeffersons do well (I'm assuming they do) it's still taking them forever to be released on DVD.
It feels like it's forever, doesn't it. But it's only been a little over a year since the Season 1 release of Archie Bunker's Place so give it time before casting it to limbo. Given Sony's track record with other shows, it's very hard to determine whether a show is put on the shelf indefinitely or if they just haven't gotten around to it yet.
I enjoyed Archie Bunker's Place more than I thought I would. I thought I'd miss Edith too much, but truth to tell, I felt some of the better episodes of Season 1 were the ones without her (at least plotwise). And the Thanksgiving Reunion, which is the last episode to feature the full original cast in their respective roles, is most definitely a highlight. If some could give this set a chance, I think they'll be pleasantly surprised.
In any case, the green light for Archie Bunker's Place could actually be in place, but Sony still typically drags its heels turning out further season sets even on their steady sellers, so who's to say?
If anyone has contact info for Sony, perhaps we should inquire whether there is to be more Season sets of the show. I certainly hope so. Aside from the death of Edith, an episode which we all want in our collection, I've grown fond of the other characters of the show and am quite eager to watch more of them. My viewing of the show before the Season 1 set was sporadic at best (given that it's hardly ever shown in syndication) and I don't think I ever gave it a fair shot.
The show is much better than it's given credit for.
Ed
USATVFAN 03-23-2007, 09:06 AM Sorry I Forgot about Good times then it 2 spinoffs.
USATVFAN 03-24-2007, 10:46 PM i bought it and i love it it is one of the funniest shows ever.
i just go done watching the fund raising episode and one thing that I notice is that she mention THE JEFFERSONS (of course it wasn't a show yet) but i though it was funny because The Jeffersons would appear two years later as a spinoff of all in the family which was the same show that Maude spun off from and the Jeffersons were the Bunker neighbors.
Buffyboy323 03-24-2007, 10:56 PM I picked up my copy tonight.
And don't yell at me for getting off topic here,....So I asked the girl at Best Buy if they had it, and she tells me she isn't sure, because they were only sent 8 copies! 8!!!??? How do they expect good sales when you send only 8 copies of a new DVD set to a big store like that? I don't get it. And I got the last one there. Whoohoo! (So now we know that aside from us, 7 other people purchased the set, LOL)

I know what you mean, you would think a store like Best Buy would have more copies than that for a show that is being released. What are they thinking?????
Chuck89 03-24-2007, 11:32 PM I bought it from Amazon and just got it in the mail today. I just finished watching the episode where Maude got a ticket and she kept telling the officer that he had a babyface,LOL! Very funny episode.

Sony has no control of how many copies are sent. If Best Buy only had 8 copies, it's because Best Buy only ordered 8 copies. It's understandable. It isn't a current show and a current hit so it shouldn't have as many copies as Friends would or Seinfeld. The demand is simply not there. Many potential fans aren't even aware of the show's existence since it rarely plays in syndication.
What could possibly help the show's sales are fans of The Golden Girls checking out the show to see if they'd like it. A lot of fans of The Golden Girls have never seen Maude and might check the show given that a purchase of it isn't too out of price (around $20-25). The fact that the cast included Rue McClanahan might also be an added incentive. But still, by and large, Maude won't be as stellar a seller as Lost or Alias. The stores know that and are trying to make sure they don't have an excess of DVDs on their hands.
I know what you mean, you would think a store like Best Buy would have more copies than that for a show that is being released. What are they thinking?????
The way they should. If they overstock too many DVDs, some have to be sent back, which incurs more expense on Sony's part to pay for shipping. It's decidedly in Sony's best interest to make as much of a profit as possible. If a show loses money on a release, we won't get any more seasons. Given that, Best Buy having a shelf with 20 copies of Maude sitting there with only 1 or 2 copies going out per week won't help the show in the long run.
No, Best Buy did the right thing. Better they sell out of a small stock and order more than send back a larger stock of DVDs that won't move.

storrs19 03-25-2007, 09:44 AM I purchased it on the day it came out and have just finished watching all of season 1. Now for a few thoughts. Bea Arthur carried that show. Now I have not seen it in years so maybe it got better later on but for season 1 her co-stars (with the exception of Conrad Bain) seem so lifeless and more like props for Maude to bounce things off of. Now don't get me wrong, as I love Maude and am very glad to finally see it on dvd but does anyone think it would have been better with Conrad Bain playing the role of Walter?
As ot the number of copies a store gets. I have noticed that with many classic shows you better get there the day they come out as they will be gone after that first shipment sells out. Wal-Mart never re-stocks anything in the classic tv genre. They get their initial shipment (6 to 10 sets) and that is that.
Edster2973 03-25-2007, 10:20 AM Bea Arthur carried that show. Now don't get me wrong, as I love Maude and am very glad to finally see it on dvd but does anyone think it would have been better with Conrad Bain playing the role of Walter?
No, I don't think Conrad Bain would've been better as Walter. He was best as Arthur. If Walter seems bland, then that's how he was written. He would've been just as bland with Conrad Bain speaking the lines.
I think what you're trying to say is Maude should've been married to Arthur but that wouldn't have worked. Maude was too much of a liberal to ever be shacked up with an extreme conservative. It's would've stretched credibility to the utmost.
The other cast may have come off as props but it worked nonetheless. The banter between Maude and Arthur or Maude and Florida was hysterical. And you need people like Carol who provide enough sanity so that the star Maude can be part of the comedy's craziness as well as its grounded reality.
What I think you're responding to mostly is that the other cast members served mainly as props for controversial issues rather than the comedy. It did seem as if the societal statements on feminism, politics, drug use and abortion was as much of a focus as was the comedy, and each supporting character's function served to bring some of those issues into the story as much as the comedy. It was the formula used in All in the Family where Mike's comedy was more rooted in being the political voice for Archie to spout against, especially in Season 1. It was in the later seasons that Mike developed into more than that.
The same happened with Maude. Walter develops into something more than just a male Edith Bunker and Arthur really blossoms when he's finally paired with Rue McClanahan's character Vivian. Vivian herself seems rather bland in Season 1 compared to the comedy she'll bring in the later Seasons. And Carol will be more than just a mouthpiece for women's lib as well, especially when it comes to raising her son Philip. Like all good things, it took time to hone each character's strengths.
As ot the number of copies a store gets. I have noticed that with many classic shows you better get there the day they come out as they will be gone after that first shipment sells out. Wal-Mart never re-stocks anything in the classic tv genre. They get their initial shipment (6 to 10 sets) and that is that.
Again, because the usual stack of DVDs beyond that initial 10 sets sit there on the shelves. There may be a couple that would sell, but shipping prices the way they are, it simply isn't worth it to a store to have one or two copies shipped. They'd rather order more copies IF they are guaranteed to sell. Classic sitcoms are not.
One other factor is the internet. With amazon.com selling the same DVD sets at sometimes a much cheaper price (Maude, for instance, was selling for $4 cheaper on amazon.com than at Best Buy; I bought it anyway since I just had to have it!), some Classic TV fans have opted to buy their sets that way. Sometimes you even get the sets earlier than they appear in the stores. The stores know this and have to order accordingly. They don't want DVDs sitting on their shelves taking up space that could be used for another DVD title that could potentially sell better.
Can't say I blame them...

JAlanRuss72 03-25-2007, 10:46 AM I bought mine last night at Best Buy. They had about 3 copies in the New Releases. It's nice to see the episodes UNCUT AND in clear quality. The episodes I had before were recorded on dvd-r from TVLand. I watched about 6 eps last night and will finish the rest this week. One of my favorite episodes is when Maude hires Florida. I also love "The Ticket". The judge is hilarious.

Solomon, I paid 24.99 at Best Buy. I probably could have gotten it cheaper, and I usually try to shop around a little, but I figured this time what the hell-lol. It was nice seeing the episodes uncut and in great quality (especially the opening credits, which I hadn't realized were as bad as they were on the duped copies I have). I went to Best Buy because WalMart here doesn't have much of a selection of "classic" TV Dvds. Their selection really sucks.

ethelmaepotter 03-27-2007, 02:30 PM I purchased Season 1. The shows look great. Very clear, not a glich anywhere. However, it seems like I remember this show being a little funnier than it was. Maybe the first season is just not the best, but frankly, there weren't many laughs in the whole thing.

I know but Sony can release stupid sh*t like square pegs
OnTheMarkTexas 05-06-2008, 05:10 PM Well, we all know the ONLY reason Sony is releasing "Square Pegs" on DVD now is to coinside with all the hupla from the release of the "Sex & The City" movie.
Funny how Sony never gave "SP" a second thought duruing the height of "S&TC"'s popularity. Perhaps they released they missed the boat that time around and they're taking advantage of the movie's release now.
ChristinaV 10-22-2008, 10:24 AM I ordered mine online, and I had it all watched by the second day it was in my hands! I have no self control. LOL I was so overjoyed to have it, and I was in love with Maudie, the combination of Maude and Walter, and Arthur and Maude, by the 3th or 4th episode. What did eating, sleeping or anything else matter by comparison?
I don't mind saying that one of the things I most appreciate about season 1 is the absence of Vivian from most of its eps.
